i usually just set video output to opengl glx and in codec settings i set vdpau for hw accel. never had any problems except of annoying shitty interface. i guess you could mess around with advanced settings for video and codecs too ,see whaddup.

I never had this problem with VLC while using my desktop computer, but it consantly shit itself on laptop so I switched to MPC
