Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

It seems like the W420s are the best bang for your buck when it comes to getting a good processor. Only thing I dislike is the size. You can get a W420 with a intel i7 2760qm quad core for 250-300.

I don't need the dedicated graphics card are there any other smaller thinkpads with a cpu that is equal in performance for around the same price range or only a bit more? Other laptops would be find too if they have a good trackpointer type nub.

T420-T430-Comparison.png

T430 and T420 owner here. I'm trying to give the T430 the classic keyboard. I have posted this issue for the past couple threads, and no solution has come.

My problem is the following section:

>Method 1: Replace the xx30 Palmrest with a xx20 Palmrest

>The least invasive method is to replace the entire xx30 (T430/X230/W530) Palmrest with the xx20 (T420/X220/W520) Palmrest. The palmrest costs about $10-20 on eBay, search for these FRU numbers:

>T420 Palmrest
>No fingerprint reader - 04W1371, 04W1372
>X220 Palmrest
>No fingerprint reader - 04W1411
>With fingerprint reader - 04W1410

>It's pretty simple:

>Remove and unplug the original palmrest.
>Install and plug in the xx20 palmrest.
>Then insert the keyboard; it should fit perfectly.

This at first makes sense; Swap the palmrest at the same time to avoid filing down the nubs on the classic keyboard. However, as mentioned earlier I own both a T430 and a T420 and I can safely say that the palmrests are not the same. I have physically tried to swap the T430 palmrest with the T420's and it simply does not fit, despite the swiki stating otherwise.

Why is this? Am I missing something plain and obvious?

The picture attached is my problem. You can see that the lines absolutely do not match up, and the palmrest swap seems impossible.

Someone, please tell me what's up. I want to hear back from anyone who has ever swapped a T430 palmrest adn keyboard with a T420's.

Tried out my friend's brand new X250 last night

how the hell do you guys manage with such a tiny-ass screen? the resolution is pretty bad as well

does it get better/is the X250 just bad?
>>
>>55222592
I usually just dock my X230 and use an external display. I'm mostly just using terminal and web browser so that helps too as they don't require that much screen estate.

I wouldn't try running an IDE with the integrated display.
>>
>>55222872

Should I get the x220 or the x230?

x220 pros

+ cheaper

x230 pros

I have never typed on an old thinkpad keyboard so I don't know what I'll miss, I currently prefer the x230 because of the backlid keyboard and the better graphics card

This isn't a Thinkpad, but it's close, I just bought this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/142028392573

I only care about the processor it comes with mainly, but there are so many different sizes of this thing... It looks smaller, but I'd like to find a video on it and take a look at it before it comes in a few days. Like, seriously, either way it doesn't matter, it's just going to sit under my bed and be server hardware, but if it's small that would be cool.

I like to have all my important files on the same disk and boot from there. The X230 is powerful enough for my home and professional use so I don't see point in buying a separate desktop system. I guess it would be useful for gaming, CAD or heavy video editing but I don't care too much about those. For heavy data processing I usually buy instances from Amazon.

I have full disk encryption and backups so if I break it or it gets stolen I can just buy a new refurbished one for <300€ which is very nice as I don't have to care about that too much when I carry it around.

Ultrabase 3 for X230 with DVD+-RW DL was 24€ last January which isn't too expensive. Docks get cheap after about 3 years from release when businesses dump them as consumers usually don't care about docking.

There is nothing wrong with gentoo. It's not newb friendly but you could install it if you dedicated an hour to the manual.

Ubuntu's "linux for human beans" it's a good start but many people don't like their roots.

Debian's solid and has a friendly interface to install it. Default everything would work if you get confused.

>>55229496
Disable it in bios. If you're on windows disable visualization so spyware can't turn it back on.
>>
>>55225231
You should upgrade the memory and switch the HDD to SSD. Also if you have 8GB or less memory you should apt install zram-config for some compressed in-memory swap (thanks Android developers for this gem of a feature).

Gentoo is for advanced users only. Anyone claiming otherwise is either a fool or trying to fool you. If you're a new Linux user you should consider Fedora or Ubuntu.

I'd like to recommend Ubuntu but recently Canonical has been driving it away from collectively agreed upon GNU+Linux base with Snap and Mir without good reasons. This may cause serious compatibility problems in near future. Still it is currently the best supported commercial distribution for consumers and most proprietary Linux software target primarily Ubuntu base.

32bit is obsolete on Linux unless your processor cannot handle it (T510 can). You should default to 64bit as it'll give better performance and better software support.

What's everyone's opinion on the x250? I'm upgrading from a samsung series 9 (first gen) which was a poor choice to begin with.

>budget is flexible around the 300-600 range
>going to primarily use it for school/work on the go

I've found decent options on ebay so far around 550 with i5 cpus (5300u) and decent ssd storage. The only problem I came across when I was looking for one was the display resolution. I could only find the 1366x768 res models and nothing with 1080 that wasn't touch and well over my budget. Coming from the samsung which is 13.3" and is the same resolution it looks okay but I wanted something more crisp. The x250 is 12.5" so it should look better but what's your opinion?

>>55230277
Be sure to pick up a WiFi card that is whitelisted by the bios. Otherwise your ThinkPad will refuse to boot. You can also try to reflash the BIOS with more compatible version.

Personally I can live with non-free software device drivers as I'm already running the Intel Management Engine which I cannot do anything about.

Why not get a T420s then? It's a lot cheaper, and can easily be upgraded to a 1080p screen for around $130 (upgrade set + monitor). Also it's more comfy
The only real downside of the older laptops compared to the new ones is the battery life

If you're going to own a ThinkPad, you have to do it right the first time so, get the updates (offline) installed that fix the Windows Update issues (there are 7 of them), do a clean install (offline), install those before you get online again, then go from there.

What OS(s) do you run on your Thinkpads?

Windows 7 runs a little slow in my T420 even with minimum bloat and minimalists settings, I just fucked up somehow my Linux installation and I´ve got a copy of OSX but installing it looks like a massive hassle and, judging by several forums I´ve checked, it seems to cause some bugs here and there.

It´s time to format, and I just need something that helps me stretch battery life and doesn´t require extensive care or customization because I honestly don´t have the time for it.

Any suggestions?

I need to replace my T430 fan as I think that the bearing broke after falling hard on the floor a couple of time and it whines REALLY bad.
There seems to be a lot of replacement heatsink + fan combos on ebay for this laptop, which one should I get? (no discrete GPU)

Get an SSD. It runs perfectly fine on my T601F. I also dualboot Xubuntu, but I don't use it frequently because it doesn't play nicely with the Advanced Dock.

My T420 has arrived which of all these Lenovo programs do I even need?
>>

None of them. Just install your OS of choice. If you like what you already have, then uninstall it all.

It´s all trash. And even what´s not trash has no use for you if you don´t know what you need or not.
>>
>>55237283
Only the Power Manager and hardware drivers. Everything else is trash. You should clean install anyway.
>>
>>55237366
Why should I clean install? And can I do it without a iso file?
>>
>>55237373

>>
>>55237411
It´s not a Thinkpad thing, it´s general. Every fucking manufacturer loves to fill computers with software. Most of it is useless, half of the rest can be replaced with better software. The rest is sometimes useful, and generally just the most basic stuff like a power manager.

got a T460 today, my first chinkpad

pretty impressed with it so far, it's slimmer than I thought it'd be and the screen seems nice despite the not-so-good reviews

installed ubuntu and everything seems to be working out of the box; the only slight problem is that the battery status is shown separately for each battery, it doesn't combine them, is there a way I can change this?

also got it with a backlit keyboard even though I opted for the non-backlit, not a big fan of the key material, but I guess I'll get used to it
>>
I made a thread about this which probably won't get any replies but maybe you guys will take pity on me in here.

My friend let his special needs brother use his thinkpad (windows 10) and when he got it back it won't boot. He doesn't know what the brother did. The automatic repair/system recovery tools wouldn't work so I tried a factory reset, but that kept getting hung at 50% so I wiped the drive and tried to reinstall. That didn't work either, it would finish the installation process but then give the unspecified error of "the operating system could not be loaded because a required installation file is missing or contains errors." I know it's not the installation media, but I tried it with the disc and with a USB drive loaded with 2 different isos and got the same error every time.

I tried putting my hard drive (same drive from my thinkpad, a 500gb seagate) into his computer and it boots and runs fine. So I know it's not the cable, memory or anything else besides his hard drive. Then I tried cloning my drive onto an external drive, and from there onto his, so now the two drives should be exact copies of each other but his computer still won't boot with his drive in it. In fact, windows won't even load, it just gets past the thinkpad splash screen and goes to the black screen with the blinking cursor and stays there. I checked his drive with chkdisk and HD Tune and both return no errors or bad blocks, so I don't think there is any physical damage. However he is sure the brother didn't drop or damage the computer in any way because he was in the same room with him the whole time, so I was doubtful of that in the first place.

I'm at a complete loss now. Anyone else have any ideas?

I bought a new T450s at the beginning of the year, and it has been massively lagging in Windows 10 whenever I run anything even remotely graphics intensive.

I went to the repair shop a couple of times already, suspecting it's a hardware problem, since I did a clean reinstall as soon as I got it, and uses Ubuntu most of the time, but the guy tells me all the hardware tests comes back normal, so there's nothing he can do about it.

I did a clean install again yesterday, and the problem still persists. I plan to go back again tomorrow and tell him to look at the GPU/IO, as I am getting ~6 fps when running furmark (GPU stress test), and sometimes watching twitch makes the browser slow as fuck.

Is there any tests you guys know I can run to convince the guy to replace my hardware when it's still under warranty?

Thanks in advance.

I have had 2 Thinkpad T420s and both times the hinges have been problematic. On the first the hinges completely bound up and on the second the front part of the bezel around the screen is separating at the seam. I had to junk the first because the plastic began to crack but I am hoping to fix the second.

Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? I am assuming it is caused by something I am doing wrong in general usage but could I just epoxy the seam as a fix?

My T460's screen seems pretty nice, definitely not the brightest or with the most vibrant colors I've seen but not bad at all.

No.

The front surface is a remarkable bit of engineering consisting of multiple thin-film anti-reflection layers plus an organic high efficiency polarizer. It's the single most expensive part of the panel, even more expensive than the TFT matrix itself.

Is she going to use it only at home as a desktop repacement or carry it around? The T530 is huge and unwieldy to carry daily around except for the manliest of men.

Portable desktop replacement: T530
Laptop to carry around: X230

No, it's just a consumer shit line. Avoid.

Does anyone other than lenovo make a laptop with a good trackpoint? Their recent laptops are shit and I don't want to support a company with such bad practices.

I have a dell latitude right now (e7440) and its trackpoint is usable, but nowhere near what lenovo makes.

I have an HP Elitebook 2570p now.
It's sturdy as hell, but I miss my old X230 whenever I touch the keyboard.
The keys just aren't as good as on a ThinkPad. The HP Trackpoint isn't as good either. The nub is concave and there aren't any drivers to disable the touchpad.
The only improvements over a ThinkPad are full aluminum chassis and excellent touchpad/Trackpoint keys. This misses the middle scroll button, though. Also, this is probably the only 12.5" business notebook with an integrated DVD drive.

I am thinking about changing to a T430.

Gimme!

That's pretty much it besides HP. Nobody else is really worth mentioning. Toshiba's business line had them too but you can judge that yourself

Reminds me of the DER program in Australia. 5 years of free craptops and perpetual software licences to boot (as I recall, /g/ was at the time inputting random student numbers to pinch keys)

>1080p display arrived in mail today
>I ordered the LG LP140WF1-SPB1
>it is the INNOLUX N140HCE-EAA
>fuck it let's try it anyway
>doesn't work
I fucking hate eBay vendors that can't even send me the correct model. I'm sure it'll all be resolved but it'll cost at least another month ;_;
>>
how come nobody seems to use a t520?

mine should arrive today, so why is it so unpopular?

it's too big for what you get. most people are looking for a compact laptop
>>

>heavy
>large (doesn't fit on smaller bags)
>no battery life
Not really what people are looking for with laptops..
