Decent Ubuntu compatible GPU

I am re-purposing an Ubuntu tower that I got from my old job, the place shut down and they sold off their stuff. I have already installed Retroarch after updating Ubuntu, and set up several cores and emulators. 6th Gen games run well enough (Mostly Gamecube), but I cant squeeze full speed from these emulators with just the APU (AMD A6-6400K). I usually get 60 frames if I don't scale up the picture.

Can anyone suggest a GPU that works under Ubuntu that would be great for running high demand emulators?

I honestly thought you could download a driver for any GPU that was compatible with Ubuntu.
Does it seriously have architectural incompatibilities?

sometimes the compatible drivers have issues.

Wait untill the 480 comes out, you will find a lot of Nvidia GPUs on trash cans, or people trading them for a beer.

My GTX970 works very well. You probably don't want to go down that road though.
