Why aren't you using IPv6 yet?
>>
Because IPv4 just work
>>
My ISP doesn't allocate a public address for me.
>>
>>55213961
It works as long as you're interested in end to end communication like what you do in real-time audio chat and game servers.
>>
>>55213961
No it doesn't
>>
>>55213898
Been using it for a few years now, my ISP was one of the first to support it.
But actually no real reason to use it, unless my device auto configures to IPv6 I won't try to change it.

Also most ISP's still use IPv4, you might think you have IPv6 but that's only on the local net, between the router and ISP it's still IPv4.

If you gayme online with a onboard NIC then use IPv4, because v6 takes about 8x more resources for processing packages, increases latency and on a slow computer even lag.

For example, if the CPU is doing the packages, a file transfer of 2MB/s will eat up a whole 1.2GHz Athlon to 100% CPU usage.

hurricane electric is a little easier to setup than sixxs in openwrt and there is a lot more information on HE than sixxs.

I wonder if people said this way back when you only had one shared phone for a entire building.

It's 2016, I have more than one internet connected device.
>>
>>55213898
I am, of course. My ISP doesn't support it, however, so it's over 6to4.
>>
>>55214388
Don't, IPv6 is useless if you don't have specific use for it.
>>
>>55214213

No thanks. I could enable IPv6 but have no reason to. Especially since I still get a real IPv4.
>>
>>55214447
You don't have to use the MAC encoding address scheme, you know. You can even enable dem privacy addresses.
>>

I actually tried IPv6 some months ago
Result was that some devices sometimes had strange network problems

Have you? Get a old CPU back from around 2002, get a motherboard with a NIC and then try to transfer huge amounts of data, it's gonna hog the CPU.

Probably still see it today when using a shitty onboard NIC, transfer some files over a Gigabit Ethernet connection, the CPU will be around 10% all the time doing it.
>>
>>55213898
fucking github pagehost doesn't allow ipv6 or even https on custom domain
>>

I sure did have 100 Mbps networking back in 2002, and I had no problems transferring files at full speed, and that was between a 500 MHz P3 and a 166 MHz P2.

You fucked up. Just posted your IP in a raid IRC I'm a mod on. Enjoy your computer while it lasts :)
>>
>>55214941
That's NAT. That address you have only works internal to your network. If anybody else tries to connect, they won't be able to reach it.
>>
>tfw no native ipv6 support
>>
>>55214913
The vast, VAST, majority of people do not need a uniquely Internet addressable IP address on a mobile device.
The vast majority of people don't need uniquely Internet addressable IPs for all of their home devices and can just forward ports instead for particular services.
The vast majority of people won't benefit from all their IoT devices being Internet addressable (malware, etc).

IPv4 will last us longer than they are claiming. It already has and we still haven't run out of addresses.
>>
>>55214992
Good luck I'm behind 7 proxies and your lucky if your hack penetrates through the first two
>>
>>55214380
I'm glad theres at least one more person out there like me who feels IPv6 is cancer. It's not that IPv4 doesn't need replaced, just that IPv6 was NOT the answer.
>>
>>55215035
There are no benefits to remaining on IPv4. 99% of users do not know how to forward ports. This also doesn't work if you want to say, host two html servers on the same subnet.

It also removes the need for DHCP. If you want, you can have a globally unique suffix. Anywhere you go, you can use the same suffix.

IoT definitely requires IPv6. Otherwise you will need 70 year old grandmas to select and forward mulitple different ports for their thermostat, and freezer, and what have you.
>>
>>55214388

hurricane is blocking smtp(s) ports and irc ports
sixxs.net does not allow registering anymore

:(
>>
>>55215121
99% of users don't need to forward ports and stand to gain nothing from letting the Internet see their fridge and air conditioning.
In fact, push servers are probably the best solution.

>two web servers on the same subnet
Subdomain, or a domain server.
>>
>>55215297
It's doable in IPv4, but the fact is it's more difficult than it needs to be.

Once vendors and hosting companies jump onboard, the end user won't notice a difference except that some things will be easier.
>>
>>55214388

>>
>>55214599
Does IPv6 leak your ip?
>>
>>55215297

why? that's just stupid.

Sure it's a solution but it's a dumb one when a better solution has been ready for over a decade.
>>
>>55215121
>If you want, you can have a globally unique suffix. Anywhere you go, you can use the same suffix.

which brings up some seriously cool things you can do - like completely eliminate phone numbers and third parties (fb/skype/google/etc) and call folks via IP (or more likely their DNS)
>>
>>55214672
Yes, because the speed was a fraction of that.
Also, if you had a network card with a chip that offloaded it, then it won't affect it much at all, if not, you probably burned a lot of CPU cycles on file transfer. You could not really do anything reasonable at the same time.
>>
4 will last until 2025 at this rate, who gives a shit
>>
>>55215608
>Yes, because the speed was a fraction of that.
A fraction of what? You were talking about 2 MB/s. 100 Mbps networking is 12.5 MB/s.

And I also used this with IPv6. Not in 2002, but I had the same hardware for many years after that.
>>

I can just see the NSA and the Google Analytics people running their hands over this right now. The last thing we want is a world where an IP address is strongly tied to an identity and vice versa.

>I can just see the NSA and the Google Analytics people running their hands over this right now. The last thing we want is a world where an IP address is strongly tied to an identity and vice versa.

Why? it's already like that. You have a address, a phone number, a credit card, etc.

this is how the internet works - you identify a address to a device, only with ipv6 you have so many addresses you can change it every minute if you want, never reuse the same one, and still never come close to running out.

The bad guys won when you're afraid of technological improvements.
>>
I don't know enough about it to change my network to it. Anyone got a resource on ipv6 addressing? Mainly for dhcp
>>
/g/uize. IPv4 is deprecated.

>Muh NAT
Listen, NAT is a HACK, when it was just at the Home/Business-office level, it was fine, but now we're getting into two-tier NATing which is just balls to the wall insane.

>ISPs aren't even using all the addresses
Too bad too, because maybe we'd have other companies to choose from other than Cuckcast and TimeWaster. However no, we're out of IPv4 addresses, unless one of the bigger ISPs are going to release some of their IPs, there can be NO NEW ISPs...

>Buh who needs a route-able address to my fridge
Then don't allow your fridge to be routed to fucking numb nut! Just block traffic at the firewall like a SANE PERSON DOES...
>>
Server does, at home my ISP isnt allocating me ipv6.

Theres 0 reason to not use ipv6 to all these retards out there.

I really fucking hate when sites ignore your language headers and set it according to your geographical location.

Also these 3rd world ISPs haven't rolled out IPv6 yet.
>>
>>55217675
>I really fucking hate when sites ignore your language headers and set it according to your geographical location.
Agreed. Makes VPNs ass sometimes.
>>
>>55216510
This is the correct answer. In addition, the main obstacle to IPv6 implementation is hardware. A lot of older infrastructure only supports IPv4, and it isn't getting replaced until it breaks. IPv6 includes additional security measures and removes bloat from the headers. It is objectively better than IPv4 in every regard. Hexidecimal addresses can be a little intimidating at first but they're easy to remember when you get used to them. NAT is not a permanent solution.
>>
>>55213898
Because it would involve adding a few lines to a config file and I don't really feel like doing that
>>
IPv6 is insecure backdoored garbage.
