I have an 8gb partition that is not recognised by windows. Could it be the swap i created when installing linux?

Yes it could be, just fucking boot up a live CD and check.

Also swap? In 2016? Unless you use suspend mode there's no point.

It depends what you're doing, but mostly no. If you're gaming and just using your PC for shitposting etc then you don't need it, but if you're doing something more intensive like running VMs / messing with RAM disks / using GIMP to scale memes to 1TB and the like, then it can't hurt.

It's a habit as well, though. I still create a swap partition despite the fact I haven't needed one for 4-5 years. I have one on my laptop for suspend but other than that I'm wasting space.
