They sound like shit without phantom power but they do work. Just get a lavalier mic it will sound much better for a setup with no DI box.

Try it when the BM-800 arrives, no one has tested every sound card out there. If it doesn't work out invest in a better solution. Or just get a lav mic, it'll work fine if you're not a musician or creator.

No it wont. Condensor microphones need a 48v signal on them to provide power to the inbuilt preamp. Without it the signal level is really low and so you have to crank the gain and thus it sounds terrible. Your 5.1 sound card is still not designed for recording so it doesn't provide it. Something like a Presonus Audobox USB would.

It turns out the USB sound cards (like the somake) don't provide much power, but they have Automatic Gain Control turned on by default, so the mic is at least usable and sounds loud enough. If you turn off AGC under the mic settings, you get to see how quiet it really is without phantom power.

That makes a lot of sense, explains why some sound cards are quieter than others. The sound quality is richer with 48v in all tests I've seen, the somake tests always sound a bit flat like a quiet scene in a film turned up to full volume.

I'm shitposting on the Super right now. The build quality is really good, vastly improved from Umi Iron. The screen is bright with good black levels. The rom is mostly stock, nice and fast.
