>>
>>55173181
Modifiers are faster than moving your hand further to hit more keys.

I don't know what keys you are talking about specifically, but if for example you wanted numbers you can get an external numpad and put it on the left or wherever is best for you.

If you want home key or whatever then FN+k is probably more efficient than leaving the typing area entirely to go and hit it. (FN+k is HHKB hotkey)

Build quality and supply and demand, as well as other factors such as stock keycaps and switches.

There isn't as much of a demand for smaller boards, hence they get produced less, hence they typically cost more.

I've got some sort of gunk in a few of my cherry mx blue switches in my cm storm quickfire rapid. I don't know how it happened, it's been in a carrying case just sitting around since I got my pok3r. Has anyone got experience with cleaning the inside of switches? Basically when it actuates it has a lot of resistance or sticks a bit on a few keys. It was probably spilled pop or something that I didn't notice before storing it.

It's looking like I'll have to desolder said switches so that I can get at all the sides to take the switch apart and clean it. I already trying wiping at the switch with a paper towel covered in isopropyl alcohol and then pressing the switches a lot, but I don't think it's getting in there. I've already got the case apart and I ordered a frosty flake since it was apart anyway.

Anyone got experience with switch cleaning?

It's a quickfire TK.

It's quite meh in my opinion. The plastic case is flimsy and the metal plate is quite thin too, it has some flex if you put it on the stand-ups. And the bottom row is beyond retarded. I like the idea of the numpad/navigation keys block, but I think it would have made more sense to implement those via a momentary modifier rather than having to press num-lock every time you want to switch and then press it again to switch back.

Did I mention that the bottom row is retarded? It's really my main gripe with this thing, though I got it from a friend for 30 bucks, so I can't really complain. I don't really use it since it has browns, will probably replace them with gateron blacks and subject it to the same fate as the magicforce so I can make the layout a bit more sensible.

capacitive sensing is more accurate, isn't limited to 2KRO, has more tactile feel, and larger carbon-infused flippers vs cheap shit plastic.

>>
>>55174492
Except it isn't a membrane keyboard. That to me would imply it's a stem that pushes down on a dome until it actuates. Simply not true .
>>
>>55174514
It pushes the contacts on two membrane sheets together. You have to bottom out in order to actuate it. It actually uses a membrane.

How is it not a membrane keyboard?

It doesn't use a collapsing rubber dome like most modern membrane keyboards, but it sure as hell is a membrane keyboard.
>>
>>55174514

it implies that it's a stem that causes a spring to buckle until it actuates on a *membrane*
>>
>>55174498
So you've had a problem with model m accuracy? Irrelevant statement. I don't play games so why would I need nkro. It doesn't have a more tactile feel, it's a much lighter feeling switch with pretty much the same level of tactility. Cheap plastic shit that has lasted over 20 years? Try harder.

God gracious. Leave and don't come back until you know what you're saying.

It doesn't contain a rubber dome, it contains a membrane. It actuation works exactly the same like a modern day membrane keyboard.
>>
>>55174551

nope, just smacking your bullshit "master race" statement down. a larger flipper made from different materials hitting a metal strike plate is most definitely more tactile. post a thread on GH or DT and try spouting that bs.

do you think people bolt mod Ms because they "lasted"? it's a cheap membrane held together by plastic rivets.
>>

And it uses a membrane in order to register keystrokes. Most rubber dome keyboards also use membranes, yet people refer to them as rubber dome or slider over rubber dome keyboards. Like the other anon said, those two things aren't mutually exclusive at all, just like not all rubber dome keyboards use a membrane.
>>

>>
>>55174626
>>55174667
If you want something that lasts you'd be better off getting something else than that. Not that they'll fall apart or something, but they're spray painted, so the color will chip off quite easily. Look for something that's anodized if you want something more durable.

>>55174688

>I just want a keyboard like that, which I don't have to mess about with
I'd recommend getting a not that expensive keyboard and doing just that actually. Most keyboards come with not-that-amazing stock caps (even the pok3r ones are laser etched) or have some other issue.

Get a keyboard of your choice with whatever switches you like and find some nice dyesubbed or doubleshot keycaps. You can also get an aftermarket case if you like, but from what I've seen most keyboards have quite decent cases already, so that's hardly something to worry about.

I'd suggest getting a leopold (either M or C) or a higher-end Topre such as a realforce or a HHKB if you want something that will not require any modifications at all while still being about as durable as it gets.

>>55174783
I'm not questioning that anon. I never suggested that we change the names of them or anything, I just pointed out that they are membrane keyboards, that's all.

>>55174779
Beats me, I don't think it would look very good unless you get it sandblasted evenly (or try to sand it down yourself, dunno how well that'd work out).

Painting it probably shouldn't be a huge problem, though the paint would still be prone to chipping again.
>>
>>55174847

who said anything about needs and doing fine? this is about what's superior, and it's not the model M.

>>55174800

so wait, a 6 hour boltmod job is "acceptable" but a 5 minute cable controller swap isn't? lmao i'm done.

>>
>>55174864
The only issue I have with it is the lack of function keys. I think I could get by with the 84 and just Alt+F9 be F11 and Alt+F10 be F12.

But on the 107 key has the programmable keys all over the place so its hard to really assign it.

I actually really like the 84 key layout.

I like the layout just looking at it, but I'd have to relearn it and I already have enough problems when I switch keyboards.

Mostly the lack of dedicated arrow keys, the nonergonomic looking arrow layout, and the weird placement of the * key are what worry me.

Do those get in the way?
>>
>>55175071
I'd honestly just recommend getting something with a plastic casing instead and some proper doubleshot keycaps. There's no real need for a metal casing on a keyboard and most plastic cases are quite solid already.

The layout of all fs are pretty shit but you just have to get used to it and force yourself to use only that keyboard for a while. I'd personally never use it as my main keyboard though. Love my industrial m too much
>>
>>55175174

Looks like you're supposed to stick your head in there and roll your nose around on the keys
>>
>>55175191
I like my M, but I have a friend who has a AT model F and the keys felt great and much better than my M when I tried it.

I didn't play with the layout too much.
>>
>>55175177
They look pretty good. But what I was wanting to do was put some DSA type key caps on there to make it look cool, will this work with these keyboards or will it not look right?

You can just use the numpad instead of arrow keys and pgup/down. It takes all of 10 seconds to rebind the ctrl/alt keys too, but I prefer the HHKB-esque layout.

Kishsaver is one of my favorite 60% style layouts too.

It'd work perfectly fine. If you like the looks of it or not is up to you. There's plenty of pictures of magicforces or pok3rs with DSA keycaps on the internet, so forming an opinion on that shouldn't really be difficult.
>>
>>55175246

DSA would look just fine on a Ducky or Magicforce. SA might be a little funky on the Magicforce, but not hideous or anything.
>>
>>55175293
See, that looks really nice that does. I'd prefer a white casing and such but damn. I had a look at non-backlit Cooler Masters and they don't really look that good. And Magicforces seem a bit tacky, the only board that looks better is the Poker. However, I did see a review on it saying that there was rust and stuff on the board on arrival, and I don't want that... Choosing a keyboard is too complicated man... :/

>>55175323
Yea, also, about the Magicforce. Are they well built and such? For £30 they seem like a bargain. Also, I can't find them in brown switches. :/
>>
>>55175280
Kishsaver is cool. But binding all the function keys to Ctrl seems annoying because you already have to ALT+Fn to change console.

Just get a whole bunch of them and you're set

Or you can always build your own. Prolly won't be that cheap, but hey, you can get exactly what you want.

>>55175434
Lmao, buying a keyboard for me is like a momentous occasion. Also, do you live in the UK?
>>
>>55175390
The XT has the CTRL and caps lock in the right place, keeps the scroll lock and numlock segregated from the rest. I also really like the way the \ and / are positioned and the location of the Fn keys. It also seems very space efficient.

It just has some nagging things like the delete button being so far away, the aforementioned wonky numpad, and the lack of dedicated arrowkeys, and just how different it is.

I plan on getting it, modding it so '5' is a down arrow, binding ctrl+fn to F11 and F12, and seeing what else from there.
>>
>>55175434
What's the big grey one? I'm definitely interested in that just judging by the looks.

Any pictures of the layout more clearly and just descriptions?
>>
>>55175501

Not a bad idea, and it's still a fantastic quality board with no plastic rivets/flippers. Post pics if you do!

Just keep in mind it'll take a 40 dollar soarer's converter to work, and that could be spent towards an AT instead (works with a $5 blue cube adapter)

Is it your first time getting a mech? About a year ago the thought of spending a mere 70 bucks on one seemed outlandish to me, about half a year later I spent 220 bucks on a keyboard with rubber domes as if it were the most obvious course of action to follow.

I live in Switzerland.

It connects via a serial port, not really sure how you'd go about connecting that to a computer.

The key travel is short, linear and clicky (or rather a high ping type of sound), give a moment and I'll see if I can find any pictures of the keyswitch mechanism.
>>
>>55175553

to be fair, olivetti rubber domes are just about as nice as topre. a lot more unique, too.

Here we go.

It's not rubber domes, it's a piece of metal that connects two contacts on the PCB when pressed down.

The keycaps are doubleshot ABS, as you can see, some of them have yellowed, though you can fix that with hair brightener.
>>
>>55175537
The AT definitely is much more immediate.

I just feel it might be a minor upgrade on technicalities over a Model M while sacrificing the standardized layout. If I'm going to go in where its gonna throw off my muscle memory I might as well get the "best" one.
>>
>>55175553
Yea, it's my first mechanical keyboard :/
>>
>>55175575
If that's a RS232 I could probably get it to work.

Not sure how quickly the RS232 <-> USB adapters poll however.

Not particularly interested though just in I though because I prefer longer key travel switches. Sorry. Its really cool though.
>>

I'm not a huge fan of the design, but it seems like quite an decent deal (assuming that there's no hiccups down the assdrop line). Would certainly tick all the boxes on what you're looking for and allow for a fair bit of customization in the future.
I think it's funny how they use that generic LED controller that comes with every set of RGB LEDs from china (I have two of those laying around right here). A more elegant or at least more interesting implementation of the lighting would have been nice in my opinion, but overall that thing looks quite good.

Get it if you like it, you won't really be coming across anything else of the sort anytime soon, unless you opt to build your own.

>>55175786
Oh don't worry, I wasn't expecting anyone to actually be interested in buying this. The keys don't feel very interesting, I just got it for free and opted to keep it for collections sake.
>>
Hey guys, novice at mechanicals here. I have a question.

I bought the rosewill rgb80. Id like to get new keycaps for it but I was wondering do I have to get specific keycaps for it since its backlit? Or should any work for it?

Also the casing is rubberized. Would I be able to paint rubberized plastic or should I make my own housing?
>>
>>55176323
WASD sells doubleshot backlight compatible keycaps, though technically any set of keycaps would work, you just won't have illuminated legends.

I don't know about rubberized plastic, but I'd imagine that it wouldn't play too well with paint, though that again would depend on the paint you use.

How is the quality of WASD keycaps?
>>
>>55177942
Wooden case from assdrop (datamancer iirc), a pcb from gonskeyboardsworks and keycaps from an old cherry board (either doubleshot or dyesubbed, I don't quite remember), either gateron browns or cherry browns.
