The Chinese are the single largest contributor of capital. VIA's latest chips were directly funded by Chinese money. Its not just called the VIA FC-1080 it is the VIA/Zhaoxin FC-1080.

Nothing went wrong, they're no more irrelevant than they were before, actually they're probably doing even better on that front, I can't remember ever seeing a VIA badge prominently displayed on a retail product before the ITX/netbook craze started surfacing
That said, it's because VIA (or more, Centaur) designs have never been perforners suitable for desktops or non-netbook portables
