For some reason it takes a million years to transfer sound files for a VN from my PC to my phone
everything else transfers fast and fine, but when I try transferring the sound folder it takes so long that the transfer just fails (with 9 hours remaining)

Because MTP transfers have massive long delays between files, so if you have hundreds of small files it takes forever.
Get a File Manager with an FTP server (like ES or Solid) and use FTP to transfer them over.

I use drivedroid to emulate a pendrive. You can mount the .img on your phone if you want access to the filesystem.
