Anytime you cross a border, they ask you if you have something to declare. Suppose the book 1984 is illegal wherever you are going, and you happen to have it in text files in your laptop.

It is no different than you walking through customs with the physical book, the only way for them to know is to actually look through your laptop. You can refuse of course, but refusal is like admitting you have it or other contraband in your laptop and you would be free to enter without the laptop.

So with that in mind, any time you motherfuckers cross a god damn border. Clean your laptops and leave nothing but the OS in it.

Doe refused to provide investigators with the password or encryption codes to his computer or computer equipment, telling detectives that he “didn’t want [the detectives] looking” at his computer

He gives him his phone and iPad. They find a recovery key for the computer hidden on the phone. They unlock his computer.

From there they find his Freenet searches and see the files that he downloaded and match the hash values (unique identifiers) of the files to those that they had from other investigations. The files

"were described as follows: 4-and 6-year-old children, 10-and 13-year-old children, and 8-and 10-year-old children, all engaged in oral sex and being sexually abused by adults. The forensic exam of the MacPro computer confirmed that Doe successfully downloaded child pornography, and that he stored the downloaded child pornography on his external hard drives. The forensic exam of the Mac Pro computer also revealed that Doe used numerous message boards related to child pornography to communicate with others who had an interest in child pornography.

Okay, so that's one case. But get this - while this is going on, the guy gets a new phone. Case#2 - His family knows he's into child porn and they have an intervention. He then admits to taking pictures of his young nieces including a 4 year-old. He shows the family a video he took while she was sleeping of where he moves her underwear and films her genital area. He also had about 15-25 upskirt shots of his 6 year-old niece. Police were called and a responding officer reviewed the images, as did the family members in attendance and the phone then locked up and forensic experts were unable to get inside the specially encrypted areas of the phone. Until, they get the court order saying open the drives and the phone. They don't ask for the password. They put him in a room and say - unlock them. He unlocks the three layers of decryption on the iPhone 6, confiscated over three months earlier and they find the videos and pics of the nieces, but he says he can't remember the passwords to the hard drives.

They file the contempt motion. At the hearing, he offers no evidence in his defense of not being able to remember and doesn't even show up in court to say "I can't remember", so they find for the state.

In fact, Doe had multiple layers of password protection on his devices, and he always entered his passcodes for all of his devices from memory. Doe never had any trouble remembering his passcodes (other than when compelled to do so by the federal court), never hesitated when entering the passcodes, and never failed to gain entry on his first attempt.

No but I do believe in the souvereignity of nations and that you deciding to travel to another country also means you accept border checks and other requirements to enter that country.

Only Germans believe countries should just open up all borders and let go of any border checks.

Haha, whenever I travel I purposefully break grub so that it automatically enters rescue mode. For me it's 4 simple commands. Your average security guard won't understand how to work that shit and probably won't hold up the rest of the line to try. They might even think they broke it, and will likely hand it back to you so they don't get blamed. If they really want to see what's in my machine they'll have to take it to their IT people or whatever and by that time I'll have been able to contact a lawyer. I'll make a huge fuss and then decrypt it anyway. Then I'll sue them for harassment because I obviously did nothing wrong. I win either way.

Unreasonably dragging your feet during a search is not illegal. If enough people did this, it would be irrational for them to conduct these searches on a widescale. The same could be said for people encrypting their data and communications.
>>
>>55162869
In 2006 someone was sperguing out about water bottles and toothpaste tubes, so TSA said no more water bottles or tubes of a certain size in carry ons.

It was in response to both the underwear and shoe bomber. The fear is that a liquid explosive is hidden in their carry-on.

Its not enforced very well. I regularly travel with large bottles of liquid in my carry-on. The monkeys behind the xray machines are half retarded.

You are not free. And declining a search isn't feasible today where your freedom is fewer and fewer. Can you trust a bureaucratic agency to respect your wishes?

They must then beg the question, "Well. What does he have to hide?"

It's a nightmare. It isn't a just Government. This is why it's so important to encrypt your data, and setup a 'ghost password' like what veracrypt offers.

You must assume this to be extortion, and no less. Just as when you are stopped, one wrong move for the glove department could end your life, and legally I may add.
>>
This thread had actually made me consider buying a new hard drive and installing something ordinary like Windows 10 on it just for when I travel.
Because yeah I have nothing illegal on my computer, but it would be very inconvenient if some tsa prick randomly decided to confiscate my laptop with all of my college data. I was already held in an airport security office for an hour once because they thought I looked nervous. Shoe bomber was just after 9/11.
UK plots for liquid bombs (retarded) occurred in 2006).
Underwear bomber was in 2011 and caused the TSA push for AIT scanners over walk through metal detectors.

AIT is annoying but has the ostensible purpose of screening non-metallic threat items, but the liquid shit is beyond dumb.
>>
>>55163892

Relax. The liquid ban is only temporary.

Any notion of security anywhere is a farce. Every test of airport security has shown that its remarkably porous. The only purpose of such security checks is to make the sheep feel more secure. Moreover, the entire terrorism issue is about making people feel more secure. The politics of terrorism are what drives all of these absurd programs. Terrorism isn't a threat to the public, its a threat to state security, that is, the politicians and leaders in power.

Its only temporary. Its for your safety. Don't you want to feel S A F E? What are you, a terrorist?

On a serious note, the Patriot Act was temporary as well, expiring after 4 years. It was supposed to be an extreme temporary measure to fight terrorism. Its been extended every 5 years without much debate and its measures are used against ordinary criminals much more often than "terrorist." In fact, there are so few terrorists to fight in the US, the FBI has to entrap at-risk teenagers into terrorism to boost their conviction numbers.

How about this? Keep your bootloader on a USB, etc. Rest of your partitions on your HDD, encrypted. Have it boot to USB by default, but if no USB will just complain that no bootloader.
