A flat surface with more triangles stays equally as flat. Maybe the first cooler was supposed to be all angular but just not enough triangles to show it! Now it's got more triangles and is expressing its shape more accurately.
Why did they make it angular?

AMD has a better design.

Although I like the idea of things AMD does. Smaller cards, more power efficient memory which is very very fast and nice looking design. I'm not sure why they aren't doing better.
