I bought a Speedmaster a month ago. I love it so far. It's legible, not too thick, classy and sporty at the same time. Also keeps time fairly well.

Will probably sell my other two watches.

The Citizen has served me so well through the years , but it's too god damn big.

The Speedmaster is not small, but at least it doesn't feel or look big.

Rate my stap collection. Excuse the shitty phone camera. 20mms to the left of the watches, 18mms to the right. Not pictured - an 18mm Geckota Milanese (in the mail). The strap-to-watch ratio looks worse than it is because I own 2 more watches that aren't pictured (being serviced). I'll be happy to answer any question about each or all of then.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

Let's pretend there's a person who under no circumstance will service a watch. They don't feel it's worth it at a certain price threshold or apocalypse scenario, whatever.

Eventually the mechanical watch will be damaged because of oils running out and all that. I have heard that Vostok movements are almost immune to this and will run for a lot longer (<10 years) without servicing because they have 31 jewels and the jewels serve a similar (although inferior) purpose of lowering friction that oil does and slows down the death of the watch by a considerable rate.

(I just used Vostok as an example because it is 31 jewels, this is a general question, not a Vostok question)

All watches need service. Quartz watches also use oils and will require service just as frequently as mechanical watches.

Jewels are used by all brands, they're used in conjunction with oil. Quartz watches also use jewels.

Conventional wisdom says service a watch every 5 years. 5-10 years is when a lot of the oil tends to break down the worst. But your average watch generally can run pretty long (decades) without the oil. It's just slowly grinding away to dust, but it takes a long time.

One of my co-workers wears a vintage Seiko 5 that was his father's, I know that thing has never been serviced. And it's probably like 30 years old.

>>
>>55152314
The oils degrade how they degrade regardless of jewels. At a general rule a 17-18 jewel movement that has 3 hands and no complications is 'fully jeweled.' 21 for a watch with automatic winding. Complications may beget more jewels, but without additional complications the more you add on the more marginal in usefulness they become.

Right. There are mechanical movements with no jewels as well. Particularly older ones.

In the age of the smartphone you have no reason to demand quartz wristwatch accuracy, for the case of most people anyway.
If you wanted true practicality, you'd wear a digital gshock.
Any deviation from this and you might as well buy something nice. Cheap quartz is rarely "nice".

And if you're also a cheapskate, F91W. It's literally the cheapest watch that isn't a piece of shit.
>>
>>55152314
Dunno. But I recall once reading a post somewhere by some watchmaker that said that basically there's generally a limit to how many truly functional jewels there are in most standard-like movements; any more than that number (21?) and it's mostly just basically decoration for marketing/bragging rights.
>>
>>55151851
>what deployant clasps are those, how much were they and do you recommend them
They're Hadley Romas. $34 a piece. I'm pretty satisfied with them so far (~1 month). Closed with just a little force and makes a satisfying click. You should be aware that they have a minimal curve, so if you have more rounded wrists they might not sit as comfortably.
>what perlon straps are those, i was thinking of buying one but was worried that there would eventually form a gap where I put the buckle through and yours don't have them at all so I guess theyre good quality
The gray and brown 20mms are EULIT. Excellent finish and stiffness where needed (i.e. to push through the buckle). Blue one is Wrist and Style - quality is decent for the price but not as good as EULIT's (edges scratchier, end is floppier). The light gray 18mm is a Da Luca. The quality is pretty much identical to the EULITs, but is longer. Also more expensive ($30!) So unless you have larger wrists, just get a EULIT. I haven't experienced gaping with any of them.
>what straps are number 6, 11 and 12 and how is the quality
6 is the Sinn OEM. I think DiModell makes them. Heavily padded, thick and sturdy. Can be a bit stiff comfort-wise. 11 is a Fluco english bridal(sp?) leather one. Medium thickness. Imo, Fluco leather straps have been the best bang for the buck for all the ones I've bought so far. 12 is a Crown & Buckle kangaroo leather NATO, a recent purchase. Thin and very comfortable.
>does the leather nato get uncomfy in the summer the some regular leather straps do
Because kangaroo leather can be made so thin, it's not as chunky or heavy as cow leather feels. You can also move it around more easily (doesn't "grip" as much), so the skin can breath. Of course perlon is still the comfy-est in the summer by far.
>is #7 made of felt or something wtf
It's tweed with leather backing. These are Shepherd's & Tailor's. I overpaid for those ($29, but they're cheaper now ~$22). Looks good but sloppy finishing.

Hey guys.

I'm looking for a reliable watch. I'm not fond of any fashion watch or whatever you call them.

I saw someone post about a Vostok amphibia that was used in two moon landings and one soyuz mission.

I want that type of watch. Military, maybe diving watches, that have a good mechanism, are sturdy, well built, and look reasonably good.

Would you happen to know any watch that fits the description?

I'm oogling the Citizen diving watch right now, and a few Hamiltons.

Crocodile isn't that common for straps. American Alligator is sort of the gold standard for watch straps, and is sometimes mistaken for crocodile though.

Promaster Sky. JDM model.

It is titanium with that anti scratch coating, with sapphire glass. It's like a little tank.

I can't speak on Seiko solar watches but I have 2 Eco-Drive watches and a G-Shock GW-M5610 and they are good watches.

I've had this field watch for around 15 years, I found in in a drawer around 2 years ago and as soon as sunlight hit the dial it started ticking and keeps excellent time.

Avoid the powermatics.
They are essentially disposable movements.

Unless the designs so take you, paying swiss tax for what pretty much amounts to chinese labor doesn't sound like a good deal to me.

Hey /wt/, I was wondering if you could give me some information this old watch. I tried googling it and I can't find literally any info on it.
It's in pretty beat up shape. Doesn't work.
Is this worth repairing do you think as well? Took it to one place and they quoted me $300~ or so.
Watch does have some sentimental value.
>>
>>55155150
Yeah, polish auction site from store with high rep, little used, I asked for more photos.
>>
>>55157199
So it's not winding with the automatic rotor or the crown?

As far as I know, there's nothing particularly special about that watch. If you open the back we can probably tell the movement, possibly an enicar.

But, if your sentimental values exceed 300 bucks, then go for it.

Is there even any good digital watch in stainless steel that is widely available and at a decent price, and not an old model costing an arm and a leg or a limited edition you'll never get?

Casio has fuckall anymore aside from overpriced G-Shocks, Suunto makes some but they're more wrist computers and have a ridiculous battery life, Pulsar makes one fucking model, and Timex has nothing anymore.

Why won't anyone just make digitals great again?

Hirsch straps seem to vary noticeably in quality between their high and low end (under $30) products. The black alligator embossed one on the Tutima in my pic is a Louisianalook, ~$29. Ok quality but thinner and less detail than equivalent or cheaper Flucos (I have another Fluco on one of the watches being serviced, pic related). The Hirschs that deserve their reputation cost > $40.
>>
>>55160729

Damn dude.

It was less than half that when I bought it a few years ago.

I'm going to agree with 9scroat, that $300 probably doesn't cover repairs, just cleaning and oiling.
