Most laptops come with Windows. Only accepting laptops that aren't available with malware installed severely limits your options when choosing hardware. You're on /g/ you should be able to wipe a hdd and install something that isn't botnet.

because they're cheap, decently powerful especially if you spec them out 100% with used parts, and no one on /g/ will admit that half the time, they couldn't afford better.

I bought my T420 when I was strapped for cash and needed something for college. Finished my degree, got a decent paying job, and now i still use my T420 on occasion, but honestly, it's time it was retired. I'll be buying a top specced Dell Precision soon with i7-6700hq, nvidia quadro, 32gb ddr4, 1080p matte screen. All for $1300 and my T420 will 99% chance collect dust in my closet. While a good laptop, it is easily outclassed by newer stuff so the only reason to buy older thinkpads is price (aka poor).

You don't exactly see everyone and their mother here on /g/ bragging about their brand new Thinkpad T460/T560/P550 do you? Or their new thinkpad X260? It's because those all cost a good chunk of change.

While it's true that 20 series thinkpads are starting to show their age, particularly in terms of the screen and battery life, they still have features that newer, more expensive machines doesn't have - dedicated volume buttons, centered keyboard on 15" models, thinklight, 7-row keyboard, some of the models don't have great upgradebility, some doesn't offer switchable battery, the performance gains even from *20 series aren't that huge, they have smaller trackpoint caps and wierd flat trackpoint buttons, some models suffer from bad quality control etc. When the retro thinkpad comes out and if it's as good as lelnovo has led us to believe, there will be a lot of /g/entoomen who'll buy it, me included.

I'm thinking myself to buy a used T420 or X220 since I'm on a tight budget.
