Is 12GB of RAM enough for today's standards?
>>

You need AT LEAST 1TB dude
>>
Today's standards of what, vidya?
>>

Everything
>>
>>55147590
8GiB is enough unless you have
-Multiple VMs
-Producing high-end video/audio
-Working with 3D animations
>>
>>55147621
For games and heavy memory programs like Premiere Pro, After Effects, AutoCAD, etc 16GB is the standard.
For everything else 8GB is more than enough.
>>
>>55147674
show me two games that require 16gb of ram. before you say mirror's edge 2, i ran the beta with 8gb of ram just fine, 1440p, hyper settings.
>>
If you have your pagefile on an SSD, you don't need more than 8GB. Don't fall for the meme.
>>
>tfw fell for the 128 TiB RAM meme
>>
Yeah you'll be fine, 8GB is common.
I've got 32GB but that's cause memory prices are so low I decided to max out my system
>>
All memes aside, as long as you have 4GB of RAM you will be ok. Windows 7 takes up 0.7-1.4GB of RAM and Chrome uses less than 1GB with only a few tabs open. You can still get a lot of work done with the 2GB left over in photoshop/blender.

However if you plan to browse 50+ internet tabs and do heavy photoshopping or 3D animation then 8GB would ideally be the minimum you should have.

Just to be safe get 8GB though, you can so so for less than $30 nowadays so cost isn't really an issue to be honest.

It's crazy when you think about it but you had to pay close to $200 in 2016 dollars for just 1GB of RAM. Technology sure has advanced.
>>
>>55147750
modded skyrim will hit that pretty easily, it's why I upgraded to 16gb

That's bot how it works anymore. Even modern cheap MLC SSDs (ie sandisk SSD plus) can sustain ~3,000 wrire cycles before they begin to fail. So about 1,400 TB of data for a 480GB MLC SSD. They also have better wear leveling in controllers that the first shitbird SSDs from 2010.

That's a fuckton of data to write.
>>
>>55147590
nah mate, you better go 64GB, just to be safe
>tfw you can open 5 chrome tabs AT THE SAME TIME, pretty crazy

I bought 16gb for my laptop because it was on sale, never used more than 4gb.

fug
>>
>>55147674
This. Screwing around with linear algebra in an interpreted language and blow through 8gb easily. 16gb saves quite a bit of time while prototyping on a local machine.
>>
32 GB minimum
>>
>>55147590
get 14
>>
>>55147590

more than enough usually
>>
>>55147590
I'm probably gonna do 16 in my next build to dick around with VMs
>>
8 is enough for a non-work PC unless you are a gamer.
>>
8GB of ram is around $30 isn't it? Pretty good bang for your buck. Why not get an extra stick and do 16GB in your build? What if you decide to suddenly find yourself with 50 browser tabs open and you want to use photoshop and keep a VM running at the same time? Just do it.
>>

Yes, especially when they have extra space for it to fail. Basically better longevity than hard drives now.

what did he mean by this?

I went from four, then to 12 (for a week), and upgraded to 16. Comfy and don't need to worry anytime soon about memory stuff.
>>
>>55150925
He's converting prices of what 1GiB of ram used to be to todays dollar due to inflation.
>>
i have 2x 4gb of ram right now.

can i just get 2 more sticks to make it 16? assuming same brand and all that?
>>
>>55150918
Then what is a cycle? I presumed it was like... writing the amount of data the disc can store. I figure a heavy user can easily do that 3000 times within a year or two.
>>
>>55150717
If i wanted to see nice looking grass, I would go outside. For games, I am looking for good storyline or competitiveness. Graphics is just complementary and overdoing it makes no sense.

8 gb is plenty for GNOME or KDE. They're a little heavy but let's not exaggerate.

>>55152238
This is completely wrong, except if you just stare at them without using any programs. Gnome + firefox can easily eat 8 GB relatively fast.

You're all fucking retarded. The fact that a game uses that amount of RAM doesn't mean it needs to.

Games free shit they don't need (ie. not on screen) when they can't allocate more memory and they need it.

If you need to ask, 8-16GB is enough.

Read the "The Physical Memory table" part from here: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/investigate-memory-usage-with-windows-7-resource-monitor/

Basically in heavy usage you want to see almost none of "Free" aka wasted memory (light blue), and plenty of "Standby" (darker blue), which is memory not required right now, but cached for fast access. When your "standby" memory starts to get smallish, say below 2:5 or 1:4 of your total memory, you'll need want more.
>>
>>55147590
500mb will do
>>
>>55147590
640K ought to be enough for anybody.
>>
>>55151004
SSDs use load balancing, to to kill a drive you'd have to write it's capacity X it's maximum write cycles. If you're writing 1400 TB+ every year or two you'll have problems with a spinning drive too.
