Is there a way to decrease this further without wrecking essential services?

This has a compressed WinSxS folder, no paging, no hibernation, any service that black viper's "bare bones" configuration said to disable was uninstalled (except the OS breaking ones), no features installed other than .net 3.5 support, no drivers for anything the target system doesn't have, all non essential control panel items where removed, all system appearance options disabled, and it's running the lightest possible theme.

I can't understand what's using so much ram, when I add up all the ram usage from the services and processes it's nowhere near as high as 494 MB, and for some reason, it gets higher over time. I only have 32gb of ram I'm playing with, and this vm only uses up to 4, but I still get low physical memory errors from just using photoshop, world machine, and firefox at the same time. Is there any way to force it to stop allocating so much ram?
>>
>>55136498
Increase the size of the swapfile on your host, and maybe enable it in your guest as well. Swap exists for a reason, and disabling it is generally a bad idea.
>>
>>55136540
I'm trying to use as little disk space as possible, along with decreasing ram usage, I don't want to solve the issue of not having enough ram with paging, I want to solve it by decreasing overhead.

I used windows built-in compression on top of my compression.
>>
>compress WinSxS folder

You idiot, the files in that folder are ALREADY COMPRESSED by default.

>he thinks he can compress more than what's actually possible

You really need to find something better to do with your time, son.

Hey, it worked.
2.78gb windows 7 x64

got ram down a little tiny bit, still no tips as far as getting that down lower.

It's a little bit more stable now, I got rid of a few more useless background apps. There has got to be a way to shoot this way further down.

find a list of services that you can safely disable
there are lots of them
bonus points if you're making it easy (i.e. with a desktop shortcut) to enable them back as you need them

I have firefox installed, and used it to browse pages already, that's at least +100mb right there, and VMWare's drivers were another 150mb.

Also, I've been keeping the fact that I still have indexing on from you all. Now at 425.

just sort the active processes by RAM usage and figure each one out. Is it that hard?

Nah, I still hate W8, will never use again.

>>55137115
The active process list doesn't add up to even 100MB, so it's therefore useless for this purpose.

I'm down to 414
>>
>>55137144
Reduce your vhost ram to 512mb, the ram usage will go down.

lifehacker co uk/2015/08/06/can-you-run-windows-10-on-a-stupid-old-pc
Replace spaces with periods obviously. Point being that windows 10 adapts ram usage to hardware. It's made to utilize whatever you have, be that 16gb or 512mb. I've found it to run better than 7 or vista overall, even on very old hardware.

>>
>>55137193
It's for a variety of reasons. One is for their proprietary mouse smoothing algorithm. You wouldn't notice it, but the tracking and smoothing get turned off when ram is extremely low. It tracks your history to better predict movements. Frequently accessed graphics are stored in a list and windows loads them up and removes them depending on your ram/page file. Desktop background either gets loaded fully or is culled based on what you see. Or stays loaded and precached. There's a ton of odd things you wouldn't think about that improve your overall experience but use ram.

It is not bloat, it uses free resources to optimize perfomance.
>>
>>55137282
I really just want to make this as light as possible. 200MB overhead tops, with all 32GB shining. Is there no way to trick it?

>>55137276
Privacy should matter for everyone, not just those who are doing something wrong. Plus, tracking features are bloat, and I don't need or want any bloat.

>>55137326
I'm sure there is, I've seen it before.
>>
>>55137340
As I was saying, there is a way,
Try this OP

1. Make a 4GB VM
2. Establish a '3.5 GB RAM Disk'
3. Set the pagefile to cache into the 3.5 RAM Disk
4. ???
5. Fuck bitches
>>
>>55137340
No there isn't. It's inherent to how windows works since XP. You'd have to modify literally thousands of services that you don't normally see. That's what makes nlited installs so dumb. You're doing something windows would've already done by itself.
>>
>>55137360
see >>55137359
>>
>>55137359
You know, I think that just might be stupid enough to work, only problem is, I don't want this as a VM, I want it as my main OS, I'm only using VMWare to test.
>>
>>55137413
Wtf, it'd work for a real OS too..
Let me know how it goes. I forgot how to set the pagefile location and stuff.
>>
>>55137423
But how would it start a ramdisk without Linux or Windows already running? How would it know to only detect 512MB of the 32GB I have?
>>
>>55136498
Are you using pirated VMWare Workstation? I'm considering using to for its Windows DirectX support. The VMWare Workstation is too shity (no snapshots).
>>
>>55137445
You mean the VMWare Player right? VMWare workstation supports snapshots, and no it's not pirated, it's a license from my work place.
>>
>>55137193
Because that's how modern Windows works. It uses RAM if it has it and doesn't use it if it doesn't. If you want it to use as little RAM as possible, boot it with as little RAM as possible.

I booted Windows Vista without changing the image radically to remove "bloat" on 256MB of RAM and it worked alright. I mean it was a tight fit, but RAM usage of almost stock vista (some minor changes were made, like removing the 512MB RAM minimum) was under 200mb.
>>
>>55137443
You can set it to autolaunch at startup
http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/faster-than-an-ssd-how-to-turn-extra-memory-into-a-ram-disk
>>
>>55137472
But it will still see the 32GB and bloat it up won't it? Even if I made a 31.5GB ramdisk with a page file.

>>55137498
I honestly can't answer that. Try it in your VM.

Did you know about pic related? Maybe you shouldn't go overboard with freeing up RAM 'cause there is really no use to doing that.
>>
>>55137513
I have uses for doing that, namely world machine, I can't build an 8k terrain with anything less than 16gb of ram. I will try your solution.
>>
>>55137551
An even more extreme solution:

Lightweight Lubuntu host with a few running daemons and processes
Windows 7 VM with 512 MB RAM and with its virtual HDD copied into a linux RAM disk
The VM would essentially run off the RAM virtual disk in the memory. You must do this (i.e. copy the VDI disk into the linux RAM disk) every time you cold start your computer, because RAM is volatile and whatnot.
The VM would then utilize the HDD to compensate for the low amount of RAM it has, without being aware that the virtual disk it's running off from is also located in the RAM.

also, I'm hearing you need it for some kind of graphical processing. Try to use the VMWare's display accelerator for that purpose.
>>
>>55137610
Can't, I use SLI. KVM doesn't support SLI, I can't pipe both GPUs.
>>
>>55137654
Trust me, if I could use Linux, and just pipe both GPUs as needed, I would have already, I love my funtoo installation.
>>
>>55137610
Well, it didn't work, the ramdisk software only uses ram far outside the bounds that the OS uses, for instance, a 4gb vm can only have a max of 1gb for a ramdisk, 8gb can have a 4gb ramdisk, 16 can only have a 10gb ramdisk, and 32 can only have a 24gb ramdisk. It's just the nature of the DataRAM software.
>>
Im using win8.1 right now but if someone made a debloated win 7 im very appreciated or how to do it.
I just do a fresh install of 8.1 because 7 is shit managing ram.
>>
>>55140414
Tiny7 is the only one i know though they took out lots of shit and now some frameworks dont work anymore
