Listening to some sort of non-distracting music is a good way to block out any of the background noise of one's workplace (i.e. coworkers talking). When programming, it can be rather important to keep away distractions that might cause one to lose one's train of thought, and perhaps along with it, an entire day's worth of productivity. There's a good article on this subject about how meetings are really bad for programmers for this exact reason.
