Seems reasonable that this is a problem, yes.
In that respect I like the Ulysse Nardin idea of using the bezel to wind the barrel instead of a crown.

$295 in 1969 is equivalent to $1,901.78CAD today. Why is rolex so much more expensive today?
>>
>>55129947
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzbNlaLyWuA

I wonder how many Rolexes were on this flight.
>>
>>55131331
Because plenty of people buy it at the inflated price anyway, so why make it cheaper? It's a luxury product, many people buy it solely because it's expensive.
>>
>>55131331
Luxury products have to be expensive, look up the premise of it on google

But I'm pretty sure they have increased the quality of their work. I could imagine operating costs and the bottom line going up with all the stuff they sponsor. I guess it all boils down to what people are willing to pay. Just my two cents
>>
>>55130465
So in other words the French dwarves ratcheted the price up to cover all the cost savings they made on the manufacturing side

>>55129947
Rolex mines the precious metals used in their watch. Refines the ore. Smelts it. Makes every individual part by hand. Hand assembles the watch, they pressure test every watch all themselves. They go above and beyond to a ludicrous degree. Their workers are extremely well paid and receive great benefits. All in America n top of that. It isn't really a good deal still, but they definitely did their part so you get what you pay for. Many luxury brand watches are like this. Rolex still keeps shit time by comparison though. But they look good

>>55131688
No. That's their manufacturing process. You can easily Google it to verify, it's pretty pointless and inefficient. But it keeps hundreds of people gainfully employed. It's just what they do, so it's hard to say a product is over priced when they see the a-z of everything and other manufacturers outsource it all. If you don't like it fine, but you can't say it's over priced when the mark-up isnt even double the cost.

Your chink watch looks a bit less mall ninja and a bit more "I bought it at costco" dadcore.

But the chink one looks pretty cheaply made. At least with the real Bell and Ross the screws fit flush in their holes. Don't be suprised if that thing rattles as you move.

I can't imagine how the lume is going to be on that either, if it's only 15 dollars. It has a backlight though, right? That's probably the only way to read it in the dark.

Also, what are the random numbers just outside of the indices? Looks like it starts counting up from 1 at a quarter past 2 o'clock, is up to 35 at around 9:15 and then goes all the way to 95. What is that?

Also, keep in mind, at that price, even if they say 'stainless steel' china may or may not be lying. Only proceed if you don't have metal allergies.

>>55134385
Just because you see something posted here, doesn't mean it's necessarily liked any more than your Movado.

Movado was a company, like many other swiss companies, that made some interesting watches back in the day, but hasn't even bothered with trying to make anything with watch movements in quite a while now. Now all they do is package up some eta movements in some watch to sell at Macy's.

That model, your watch, in particular is a design they stole from Nathan Horwitt, and they had to pay out to him a legal settlement for it. They kinda stopped making it, but then when he died they ramped production big time and started to use his name again as a selling point because now they can get away with it. Hard for him to get angry and stop them again now that he's dead.

But at the end of the day, what's going to impress /g/? A watch with a unique or novel mechanism. A company that tries to inject some sort of unique technological improvement in the form of copper-sulfate capsules or graphite particle coatings. Or even silicon used for its unique mechanical properties. But what about movado, and your watch? They buy some movement from eta, they buy some case from China, they engrave their logo on it and sell it at the mall. They don't do anything, they just buy components. But /g/ could still like a watch and company that just buys components, if those components have some technological advancement or unique properties that that justify attention or admiration. But Movado has no use for that kind of shit, that's not their marketing, and we're not their market segment.

those markings on the inner chapter ring (between the hour indices and the chapter ring) it make it look sporty, but the rest of the watch is pretty dressy so it ends up as this bizarre sub-par hybrid design

i can't even begin to imagine why they decided on sub second markings on a quartz, it's baffling to me. just an unnecessary and nonfunctional ornamentation that just clutters up the face of what could have been perfectly fine.

Is asking for purchase advice okay in this thread?

I'm looking for something dressy with roman numerals. My previous budget was around 600$ and I was set on buying the Tissot Le Locle. (pic related)
I recently however stumbled upon a fair amount of money and I'm now looking for suggestions for something fancier (up to the 1300-1400$ range maybe).

Criterias are:
>Automatic
>Dress watch
>40mm or less (skinny wrists)
>Sapphire glass
>Roman numerals

Something like a SRP715?

The new Seiko 5s (and the SRP series) have the hacking/handwinding 4R3x movements but go for something in the next line up with a 6R15. You lose the day window but you get 50hrs of power reserve instead.

I started with /co/ and /g/ but gradually replaced the former with /a/ as the SJWs moved in. That's actually where I first heard about the Komandirskie, since back in the old days /a/'s threads would usually derail into some other topic. I remember thinking how awesome it was that the Russians made mechanical watches, and I promptly bought one.

As far as watches go, everything here that is halfway decent and not a Vostok is pretty much unattainable by a NEET. I bought the Komandirskie as a College student with a part time job and the $40 cash outflow actually hurt. I can't imagine what it must be like for someone with absolutely zero income.

Not him, but on the whole I really don't mind the 6R15, it's a good movement. The only problem with it is that Seiko has gradually been replacing the higher-end 52 caliber-derived movements in more expensive watches like the SDGM, where a 6R15 really does not belong.

The SDGM is only a $600 watch though and the added cost over something like the SARX series is entirely finishing and the expensive diashield coating. Would a better movement be nice? Sure, but it will definitely cost you.

For his intended purposes, as a casual day to day watch it's still relatively thick. If you want it as a sports watch (Or like me for usage in the army) sure it's alright. But even so after a while of it snagging on everything it switched to the Osama Casio.

Write him a letter.

On the local fleamarket there's some old asshole like that, trying to sell the same beat-ass Elgin for at least half a year now, asking for a ridiculous price because it's been in WWII.

It has the original owners name engraved in it, but that normally only decreases the value of the watch, unless it's someone famous, right?
>>
>>55144935
Some collectors are into that shit, story of friendship between 2 battlebros and whatnot. Or if the watch was present during a large battle.

But honestly, once you hit WW2, Wrist watches are so common, they're nothing special, the real value in shit like that is from the American Civil War.

I'd never buy a watch that's actually been through a war. I'd buy a used A-11 or a Nam disposable that's been sitting in some warehouse or some POG's wrist, but not something that's been beat to shit in combat.
>>
>>55145026
I've got a WW2 GSTP Pocket Watch, the case is beat up, and the acrylic falls out, but it's in running order, and the dial is tidy. Honestly, you can find some nice stuff for cheap from that era, combat survivor or no.

So i'm pretty sure someone here can help me.
Im torn between the seiko skx 007 and the Orient ray.
every review i read and every comparision video i watch puts them very close together and leans more to one or the other but there is never clearly a winner.
So heres the point: I like the design of the skx more because of the flat bezel and i think it has an overall more rugged look.
some revierwers write that it was "built to take a beating" which is quite good because i plan to wear the watch i buy every day and in numerous activities.
the ray is said to be more accurate than the seiko and also 50 euros cheaper than the seiko ( i can get a ray with metal bracelet for 149, cheapest price i found for the seiko is 210 as a japan import)
does anybody know how robust the ray is?
who owns these watches and can give some pros and cons for buying them?
And most importantly: which one should i take?

I say the SKX, it's more iconic and better looking IMHO. Also if you get bored with the looks at any point it is hugely modifiable.

skx007 is better if you ask me

- crown at 4 doesn't dig into your wrist
- chapter ring is more readable
- lume is excellent on seiko divers, every orient I have has terrible lume. (this is flat out unforgivable, i think lume is very important on a diver watch)
- cursive writing on a tool watch triggers me
- white outlined markers look cleaner and bolder on the skx, compared to the silver tone rolex style outlines on the ray.
- a second crown on ray bothers the fuck out of me
- the hands on the orient bother the fuck out of me and look out of place, especially the hour hand.
- i believe the ray only has a 60 click bezel compared to 120 on the skx
- seiko divers have a history of their own
- mineral crystal compared to hardlex
- orients logo is hideous and looks like a bed sheet company or something. this is coming from a person who is a fan of the brand.
- more popular watch and movement in general, easier to find parts, aftermarket, servicing, etc

the only thing i don't like about the skx is the lume on the second hand is on the back

That ad is from earlier 90 when the Concord still flight, the last flight was in 2008 I remember

Orient divers have decent lume, better than their regular watches. But few people can compare to Seiko, their lume is the best around

They're both more accurate than advertised. My skx is actually less than +1 second a day and my ray less than +5.
I've beaten both of mine up quite a bit and they've both done well.
>And most importantly: which one should i take?
Down to personal preference familia. They're based off the same movement, but one thing to consider is if you're actually going diving the skx is ISO rated.

false: If you look at the lume comparison pictures the skx is the same as the ray and mako usa. I would even go as far to say that the lume on the skx is worse than the usa and ray. Its the seiko monster that has beast lume and not the skx.
> i believe the ray only has a 60 click bezel compared to 120 on the skx
Its 120 clicks on the new version now.

Way earlier than that, Pan Am backed out of buying the Concorde in 1973.

Hey vintage Seikobros, I'm thinking of bidding on pic related. I know people were saying Lord Matics were good, but only certain ones. Is this one of the ones worth getting? I like the clean design (no day/date) and the fact that it comes with the original bracelet. The guy is saying it has not been serviced. How much does that usually cost? Also, it is gaining time, is that better than a watch that is losing time?

I personally think the Ray looks a little dressier than the SKX, so it is probably a little dressier and all-around more versatile if you're planning to wear it around an office. I find the lume is almost as good as Seiko's, you really cannot notice much of a difference in most applications. While it doesn't have the ISO rating, this really does not matter if you don't plan to rely on it for diving. 200M is still plenty beefy in terms of water resistance.

Keep in mind there is a new Ray which does away with the ancient 46943 movement and brings in a new one with hacking and hand-winding. Anyone's guess how reliable the new one is, but it's interesting that Orient is able to do their own in-house deal without borrowing from the 4R36.
>>
>>55146363
Is there any optical difference between the old and the new one. Like how to Spot the Ray?

Hey /g/

The three main styles of watches that I like are divers, flieger/military, and bauhaus.

I already have a diver (pic related - Orient Mako). I just ordered an SNZG15K for $120CAD that I will probably keep on a leather strap, so there goes the flieger/military category. Now I'm just looking for a bauhaus.

What is the best mechanical bauhaus that I can get for sub-$200 Canadian? I'd like to keep it $150 or below but if it's worth it I can stretch to $200.

Thanks /g/uys
