every KB/mouse I've owned that's been worth keeping works perfectly without any sort of third-party software

It's really nice not needing extra space for a larger mouse pad, and they don't take that long to get used to. I actually remember trackball mice being recommended as a "secret weapon" for quite some time. You get the benefits of what would need high-sensitivity on a regular mouse for snapshots without giving up easy consistent-tracking and leading that comes from lower-sensitivity, and you never have to lift the mouse to keep turning to track another player circling you. The only disadvantage is that it takes a while to retrain your muscle memory to use it.

Yep, the left button on three of these give out on me. After the third one went I tried the Kensington Expert Mouse instead, which is decent but not my favorite shape (and the scroll ring is funky). Eventually the top left button gave out on that, and now I've been using a CST L-Trac for about a year which hasn't given me any kind of trouble yet.

Marble Mouse almost master race. I really, really, REALLY wish they would release a higher CPI model. The only option is 400 or 800, it's really bad. I've seen forums in which a guy rewired a chink mouse to fit in the case though. Required inverting the y-axis or something and/or aligning the axes very carefully.

Even the Marble was not immune from modernization: some of the ones I had had switches that wore out too early. I just bought switches off ebay and replaced them.

>>55135149
>>55127256
The l-trac trackballs have way too much inertia. The Marble Mouse for example has a 1.5" diameter ball, the l-trac, 2.25". Might not sound like much until you realize that it's heavier and has correspondingly way too much rotational inertia. I was hyped around 5 years ago because it was 1600 cpi. Complete trash to use.

>The Marble Mouse for example has a 1.5" diameter ball, the l-trac, 2.25"
It's not that simple to compare merely the size of the balls. There's also standing friction. The balls of the L-Trac and the Slimblade/KME are about the same but the contact points are smaller and smoother on the Slimblade/KME making it easier to initiate and maintain motion. The difference is pretty small but it is noticeable.

Having used both the marble mouse and the l-trac, I don't agree. The ball is a bit heavier but you forget about that after using it a couple of days.

I have this, it's nice but inaccurate. I have a hard time clicking small stuff.
>>
>>55144270
It's the Elecom-MXT1.

They're obviously great for when you have no kinds of space. I tend to mount it directly on my laptop.

If you play gaymes a lot, then you're going to want to avoid snipers because you take longer to place the reticle than people with a mouse.

If you sweat a lot, you shouldn't use trackballs at all. It gums up the ball and bearings, makes it difficult to rotate.

My only real gripe is that the fit isn't snug so you can't really use it upside down or at a steep angle.
>>
>>55144363
Trackballs are really good for continuous movement.
Using a regular mouse at lower DPIs you might find yourself vulnerable in the period of time it takes you to lift the mouse up. Maybe if you had really high DPI and were used to it, it wouldn't be a problem, but trackballs just don't have this problem at all.

Making a prototype out of metal is pretty much the cheapest way to get a certain professional quality out of it.

Plastic is obviously cheaper by volume, but has too high of a startup cost

It turns out that it tends to be cheaper to buy 10 pounds of aluminum and shave off 90% of it with a mill, than to do something that is cheaper in the long run, like sheet metal or plastic.

>>55145160
Yes, I think so.

What he's doing isn't incredibly difficult to any degree, a lot of the time is taken figuring out how to design the damn thing.

He goes over everything (except milling the chassis, which is easy enough since it's the least 3D object you'll ever mill) from anodizing, to trim, toner transfer PCB production, vacuum-form mold production for keycaps. I believe he uses a premade module that handles the keyboard-usb interface for you.

The l-trac uses standard dimension pool balls.

Finding a light ball in those dimensions would not be difficult.

I use the Elecom for games. Replace the ball though I replaced the ball with one from a Logitech mouse. The Elecom ball had a slight bit of resistance as I tried to scroll from a stop.

At work I use a Kingston and for my laptop I use a wireless trackman that has since been discontinued.

For Vista purposes this is my setup.

Elecom wired thumb trackball...5 button one fast/slow switch and and extra 6th button to slow pointer for FPS headshots...simply put the cursor will always be as fast or slow and precise as you need. Also the scroll wheel has the neat left right clicks which with some hassle can be assigned as button presses (once again for FPS games it works well for left right lean commands).

But that's just my personal opinion...it work pure magic for me. Here's a picture for you. I changed the black ball with a Logitech m570 blue ball. It looks good and seems to track a bit better but I really got it as an extra in case my darling children got their grubby ass hands on it...
>>55151521
Maybe but the only mmo I bother with is Tera and that's fairly heavy action gameplay compared to most other mmo so it doesn't bother me. If gaming is really that important co wider a left hand keypad setup. I hear the orbweaver is nice.

Personally for any game I can get away with it the optimum setup is a nice ambidextrous joystick with a 8 way switch on top (for mmo skills and such) and a shitload of buttons...put that in your left hand. And then whatever trackball most suits you in the right hand.
Yes I realize it sounds odd but youd be surprised how many games support such a setup and it is fucking godly particularly in FPS.

>>
>>55152949
oh god no, i don't use the mouse for any games, it always felt like crappy doing it that way.

here this is the current set up for browsing the internet

tab back - refresh - tab forward
page down - find - page up
close tab - new tab - reopen closed tab
zoom in - zoom 100% - zoom out

I also have a logitech g13, it was going to replace the mmo mouse but i cant get rid of how good it feels to have everything i commonly use on my thumb, not to mention the shift click on the mouse that switches middle and left click along with an extra 12 buttons to use which on chrome are mapped to

porn - porn - porn
porn - suspend tab - porn
space - , - right arrow
cross-t - ~nothing~ - common screen name

the shift click is mostly to get terms i search a lot down.

want to try out a track ball... but honestly dont think ill be able to stick with it considering how much i use the 12 pad.

hell, most programs outside of games i use have a profile to make my life easier...

no idea why gaming with it feels so shitty.

but to be fair i get it. you get used to a mouse/trackball that does it for you and thats it. had a microsoft 5 button optical back in the day that lasted over a decade and when it died im pretty sure that ranked as worse than most of my breakups lol.

bitches come and go but that thing never let me down.

all i can say is try some stuff if youre interested and give each one a week or so...tell amazon it was defective and get your money back if you dont like it. I used to do cistomer returns for amazon and if a customer says it didnt work thats grounds for instant refund. try one thumb and one finger ball. if you cant stand them in a week return them...or just keep the one ya like.

so thats my 2 cents...take a couple for a week long test drive

This, as far as I'm concerned, is the ultimate HTPC pointing device. Ticks the wireless box, and you don't have to move your hand. Seriously, you have no idea how important this is for HTPC.

You can sit there with your arms crossed, spread out, under the blanket on your lap – wherever the hell it is you want to place your hand, you'll be able to control things fine.

It is a HTPC game changer.

I guess if you have a large desk and have never suffered or think you may eventually suffer wrist pain, and you don't care about the increased efficiency and ease of use that comes with not having to swing your arm around to mouse over a page, then no.
>>
>>55157346
>increased efficiency and ease of use that comes with not having to swing your arm around to mouse over a page
sounds like placebo. My mouse sensitivity is adjusted such that i don't have to move my arm around to move across the screen. Most of the time it's just fingers flexing to move the mouse one side of the palm to another. Worst case i have to turn my wrist a little.

I guess they could be useful if you have to use your pointing device on a lot of different surfaces. But they can't be comfy enough to be used for gaming just like trackpoints or trackpads.
>>
>>55157543
It's really a not a placebo, especially if you have wrist pain from mouse or keyboard usage. Using thumb your thumb or fingers is much less painful. If you don't, that's fine.

It looks like there are at least a few people itt that find them good for video games.
>>
>>55152949
Which joystick do you use? I have same setup with my first elecom ( switched to their fingerball, it is indeed a little small like many reviews are saying, but I like fingerballs more)

Otherwise, get the mouse.

>>

>>
>>55159630
Gestures are a driver-level sort of thing, and even the best Windows trackpad drivers are crap because manufacturers just don't give two shits as long as you can point and click somewhat accurately.

This is the problem with buying devices aimed at the majority market. The majority isn't a very demanding bunch, so companies can halfass everything with zero negative impact on sales.
>>
>>55159630
I found this: http://trackpad.powerplan7.com/ but I'm not sure whether it's the same one I was thinking of.
It's supposed to enable Windows-on-Macbook-machines users to use their trackpad with the same degree of control (i.e. gestures, multi-finger touch).
On the site it says that if you're looking for a Magic Trackpad solution, you should use this: http://www.trackpadextramagic.com/

I'm running OS X on a Macbook Air, so I have no idea whether this can even come close.
I use an M570 along with my left hand on the trackpad for gestures. Super comfy.
>>
>>55159566
Depends on your usage. If you're just using it to browse the web get the trackpad. If you're gaming or need precision get the trackball.

I used to have one. I had a Trackman Wheel before my G5, which would be close to 10 years ago. It was shit for most games, in my opinion, but now that I think about it I think turning the sensitivity up would have helped.
The left click started giving up on me after a few years. The G5 lasted at least 6 years, I had to switch to my Zowie because the scroll wheel went bad and it made playing Terraria ass.
>>
>>55126138

Most graphic design things would be made MORE difficult with a trackball, and that's comparing them to mice, before a tablet was basically a requirement to be a digital artist.

would rather use an old dirty ball mouse that that shit again.

have a drawing tablet, this is acceptable as a trackpad as its 1:1 and if your program can deal with gestures its fantastic.

track balls feel weird, but probably the best you can do.

mice are universal at this point so cheap ones can be decent.
