I found a very old LaCia Tsunami drive (~50MB) from way back when, has my English papers from 4th grade and my KidPix collection. I tried everything to get those files off the drive, but in fit of rage I smashed it. Thing was insanely well built took most of the day with a full length crowbar before it died. Later found out it was a collector item going for ~$300 on ebay, which did not help my mood.
I think it would be fun to find a similar old unit and use it just to mess with people. Goodness knows how fun it has been with the 64kb flash drive I found in Dad's old stuff.
Now I need to find one of those over optimized generating videos to put on it, because 10 minute high def vector video on a few kbs would make it all the more confusing. Those things are crazy as they off load most of the demands to the CPU so the memory foot print can be next to nothing. Wish I remembered what they were called, I know they had coding competitions for them, don't know if that's still a thing now.

At some point I reasoned this was a good course of action and took it and it has proven as such. The value of interesting conversion starting materials alone has more then made up for my time spent.

Like the "three handed controller", they had developed the mini joystick/thumb stick which they believed would be a better input device. But were worried it may not go as well as they planned. So they designed a controller that could be used multiple ways, the old way and the new way then mapped the games to respond accordingly so the user could decided as they didn't want to risk everything on some new type of controller. Then years later they shoved motion controls down our throats and told us to like it with little thought to both the user and the game design. It's like they forgot good design ideas they helped pioneer.

I think the real problem was the software, much like the kinetic the games designs were trying to take existing game input models and adapt them to motion rather then design anew holistic motion interface. The low resolution and lag didn't help either, but I can learn to deal with those if they aren't too big and new hardware refinements mitigated them within a few years to what I deem an acceptable level given what they are doing.

The thing with VR that will make it struggle a lot is people are trying to copy reality, not make a new virtual one. Until we get direct brain jacks we aren't going to trick the brain well enough for that, but we can train the brain to operate in a new ways.
Much like learning to swim is very different from walking, but offers a number of new options we can use. But that learning part is another barrier.
I think in 3d all the time it gets very complicated and messy. Having a 3d file map would help organize the data in new ways to open new options.
It's really just new UI features, like how control+V changed the world despite that there were a number of other ways to copy data long before that basic command happened.

other than games, it still does the same business workhorse/data processing stuff people bought it for in the '80s; spreadsheets, word processing, small databases, remote access, and the whole ton of other software out there for PCs, whatever you wanted, chances are someone somewhere had already made it for a PC
