How's the battery life been?

Considering switching from iPhone 6 back to Android. Want a phone that's ~5", don't really care about <1080p display, good battery and ~$200.

Also don't want it to lag constantly.

I'm in Canada, don't want contract - I'll purchase outright. Any ideas? Do I have any hope?

why doesn't anyone make a phone with DUAL mSD? Why is even one mSD slot a fucking luxury these days?
Let me guess... everyone is pushing le cloud/streaming meme and doesn't want consumers to have on-device storage unless they're paying out the ass for it.

If you're still after something cheap and decent, Moto G 4th gen is meant to be good. Battery won't match the Redmi but you won't have to fuck around with ROMs, which are fine if you know what to do and follow instructions carefully but can brick your phone.

I have a dilemma. Really want to get the new Galaxy S7 active, but i`ts an AT&T exclusive, and I live in Europe. However I will be travelling to New York in the summer and I was thinking of maybe buying it while I am there. The problem is that its locked to AT&T. AT&T state that if you buy a Prepaid / GoPhone you must wait at least 6 months before you can unlock it. Is there anything I can do to unlock it quicker, is it worth the struggle?

This probably belongs more in /sqt/, but what are the practical differences between using zram and a regular swap file/partition for an Android phone? I suppose zram should be faster, but I've heard zram has a non-negligible toll on battery, does the same apply when using swap? What about using both zram and swap, is there any benefit?

I admit, I fell for it too (buy one get one free deal at T-Mobile was too good to pass up). Honestly, the software is what is holding it back. TouchWiz is starting to lag after a few months of owning this phone. My phone has never dipped under 90F in the past few weeks. I'm dropping from 4 hours SoT to 2. Even opening up the camera is slow and occasionally spazzes out and freezes, requiring me to lock and unlock the device. It's starting to stutter really badly, almost as bad as my dad's Note 3 on TouchWiz Lollipop.

Is a good way of checking if a used phone holds up is to ask the buyer to take a picture or screenshot of the SOT hrs ?

For example, a new 5x holds up for 3.5-4 SOThrs, so if I'm buying a used one, typically getting a result around there is a safe bet the phone is alright?

Some questions if you don't mind as nexus shit isn't easily available where I am but I prefer stock:

How long have you had yours?
Rough usage? Baby it daily? "Normal"?
Any drops?
Any irregularities (at all) of note?
How is the state of the power button? Still feels the same as when you first got it?

Lastly, battery: compared to when you first had it up and running (all apps installed etc.,) how does then compare to now?

Thx m80

Lemme sum up the Android market at the moment:

Samsung's Galaxy S7 reigns supreme, if price is no object. Your model choices are the flat-front S7 or the Edge, which has a screen that curves on the edges. The Edge costs more and adds functionality (swipable UI functions from the curved areas). The flat S7 has a curved back.

The S7 is further differentiated by the internal hardware. The international version has Samsung's homegrown SoC called the Exynos 8890 while the American carrier versions are sold with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. For the uninformed, there are two major differences between these two versions:

1. The Exynos 8890 is somewhat faster and more efficient in computing tasks that aren't graphical in nature. The SD820 has a much better GPU so it is the better performer in gaming.

2. The Exynos 8890 is the only version with an unlocked bootloader, which means it is the only version that can be rooted. Root allows you to remove bloat apps.

Now I have to see whether or not it's worth the hassle buying one here from the few garage type dealers that have them in stock. If there are any issues I can't just pop into a samsung/apple/sony/general phone store to get warranty shit sorted.

For 400, you should check out the OnePlus3
>>
>>55093913

If you'd prefer to stay with Android, then there are many more options in that price range. The question of which is best becomes extremely difficult to answer without know what specifications you favor. The One+ 3 lacks SD and has a questionable track record of software support as well as poor display hardware. The last-gen flagships are becoming available at that price point but the Snapdragon 808/810 waste a lot of battery as heat if you're a heavy user. There's also the Chinese flagship models but they are difficult to evaluate because you'd have to buy one to find out what the quality is like.

np, the smartphone market is huge right now, which is good and bad
>>
>>55093976
>>55094004
I checked that OnePlus 3 and the specs seems to be stupid as fuck. That phone has a better ram and processor than my laptop. Battery seems to be ok with it reported being better than the m10 but not as good as s7. I wouldn't mind no sd card since I can live with 32 gb just fine and I can use otg. My only question is how about root and custom rom support? I see they released codes already and I'm not really planning to use stock os anyway.

I have an m8 currently that I repaired too many times already and the screen is starting to fail and I don't want to buy a new one, i'd rather just buy a whole phone since HTC decided tape is what hold their phones together and I need to remove the entire guts of the phones to change screen.

Also I prefer to avoid getting a last gen since the overheating problem in the 810 concerns me, otherwise the nexus 6p or the xperia z5 were attractive options.

I'm also not going to buy anything with a contract and fuck me before I spew 800 dollars for a phone
>>
>>55094115
OP3 has a pretty open ecosystem so it's a good dev device that will get a lot of love by the pajeets on xda and CM
>>
>>55094138
Well that's good to hear. My father still has my Galaxy Nexus. Greatest phone ever made and I lack that open ecosystem back from the day.

I don't like the current market. Flagships use to be cheaper with the Iphone having a huge price. Now they seem like all are even more expensive than the iPhone for no particular reason, because the price drop in half in 2 years. It's kinda retarded
>>
>>55094212
mid-range phones are perfectly capable of doing everything you need them to unless you are some manbabby gaymer

companies like xioami, oukitel, huawei, and OP have been showing the world how hard we've been getting jewed

$800 phones are status symbols
>>
>>55094115

I'm not particularly interested in the One+ devices. As far as I can tell, they were a low-volume hype storefront in the US for OPPO. The information I've seen indicated that the quality of their past devices was fairly low, which made their upper midrange pricing less attractive. I would expect an unlocked bootloaded though and active modding, if that's your thing.

>I have an m8 currently that I repaired too many times already and the screen is starting to fail and I don't want to buy a new one, i'd rather just buy a whole phone since HTC decided tape is what hold their phones together and I need to remove the entire guts of the phones to change screen.

Having repaired a M8 (not mine), I heartily agree with you. The first thing I did when the M10 launched was watch a teardown video on YT. The poor design and layout is exactly the same. I would never, ever buy a HTC device for my personal use.

Your analysis seems pretty solid. It really does come down to what feature is most important to the individual. For example, if an elite camera at a value price is the criteria, the G4 is probably best right now.
>>
>>55094275
That's exactly why I'm avoiding htc for now. I'm someone that repairs their stuff until they burn out completely and this thing is hell. Solid device but they seem to want you to just buy a new one.

Zram is a compressed portion of memory (ie: reserving 256mb ram and with help of CPU cycles can fit maybe 350mb data and make the device feel like it has more RAM.

Swap is using a portion of internal nand as ram for less used data.

Using both gives you more ram in exchange of other performance losses. It just depends how much you want ram.

Actually I don't upgrade because of ergonomical reasons. I refuse to use a non-physical keyboard phone and BB Priv is 1. too big, 2. nonrootable, 3. keyboard is portrait only. The phone is still pretty zippy with swap enabled, but I'm concerned about possible long term consequences (if any) since it isn't exactly a linux desktop.

If you have access to another S3, test if your battery will charge and boot it. If it works, great, charge it and use it in your phone while connecting it to a PC to access it as a storage drive.
If not, is the data worth the cost of an eBay battery? Buy one, charge it, boot with it and hope it connects to your PC as a storage device.

That's what I know so far. I just want to know what are the specific performance losses I'll be facing. I have a Samsung Galaxy Epic. I'm guessing you have either this or maybe that later Verizon keyboard phone that I'm forgetting the name of.

Anyhoo, I can't tell you how zram will affect it on Android. Like I said, I have an ODROID C1+ which is a little ARM computer with 1GB RAM. The Debian distro I am using on it has a zram option to boost it to "2GB". I haven't noticed any practical difference as it's still slower than Christmas in browsing and Kodi.

What make you of the OnePlus 3, /spg/?

>Because anything over 1080p is only beneficial for VR, and you spend more than 95% of your time outside of VR. Plus, having a resolution more than 1080p has many drawbacks.

Okay, fair enough.

>OnePlus 3 is only available in 6GB RAM version.

Powering up 6GB of RAM is wasteful and stupid. Wait, wasn't this why this didn't want to spend--err, I mean chose the (cheaper) 1080p panel?

>MicroSD card slots slow down your storage as compared to the inbuilt ROM which is super fast UFS 2.0. Plus, it makes the phone bulkier. Hence, no MicroSD and 64GB ROM as standard.

Wrong. SD memory is indeed slower than embedded memory but it does not affect the speed of the onboard memory. They simply didn't want to spend to install a SD slot.

Conclusions: One+ in interested in choosing the cheapest parts while spending on useless bits that look good to a pajeet on a specsheet while actually making the device less efficient and no more useful.

From there, AOSP(stock Android from Google source) will pop up, along with a fuckton of ROMs based on CM. The current CM is 13, based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
