I have an e8300, if I want to get into video games, Is an x5450 enough or should I upgrade to an i3 6100?

Upgrading to the x5450 will be 30aud, the i3 will be 250aud. If the x5450 is enough then understandably I'd rather go with that

A shallow Googling says that the X5450 will have lower performance than the i3, but it should be ok for gaming. For K$30, it would be the better option if you are budget conscious.

I have 4ghz x5470 and I'm not aware of any game where this CPU is bottleneck
My gpu is HD5870 but I'll probably upgrade to an r7 460x or gtx 1050. I don't mind playing on low settings instead of ultra, Just as long as it runs smooth so I can join my friends.

I have bought a X5460. I haven't installed yet, but I'm going to upgrade a Q6600.
I think you will notice it. But your main problem will probably be the memory if you are on DDR2. Anyway, you can deal with it. Also, as the Xeon is quite more cheao, you also can invest in a SSD if you haven't yet.
