What's a good linux distro that actually teaches you how to use linux, not just that specific distro? So, not as hand-holding as Ubuntu. I like to do stuff manually.

I installed Slackware because of this idea, and it's great but I can't get very far with it. Not sure how to to get wifi up. Plus it has a lot of server software, when all I want is a minimal desktop distro to screw around in.

Sounds like you're asking about Linux From Scratch.

Any variety of Linux that requires you to compile it from source and has an instruction manual.

Install Gentoo, etc.

LFS works too.

Arch linux

That's 2 for LFS, but isn't there any distros out there that already have this philosophy? Things like stability, minimal, more of a general linux distro rather than trying to be it's own special OS?

Also, I don't know enough about Linux, but is installing programs from source preferable than packet managers if I like to do stuff manually? I really want to learn how to run Linux, not distro-name-here.

Slackware! Hooray for Slackware!

Yeah, I actually like Slackware and its philosophy but I don't have much experience with Linux so it's difficult. I'm thinking maybe ArchLinux instead.

Don't do it!! Use Slackware!

Install FreeBSD, then try any Linux distro and realize how shit Linux is.

Not Op, but trying to install Gentoo for the first time.
Waiting for emerge-webrsync to finish, any tips?

But I can't even get the wifi up.

I was reading the SlackBook's wireless section and trying to get some hardware drivers (broadcom 43xx) but eh.. it lead to dead links or something. So I'm confused where to go from there.

I'm thinking Arch Linux might be a bit more friendly.

Try installing wicd from in the /extra directory on the install disk.

It could be drivers, or it could be a problem in the rc.d scripts, orrrr... But installing wicd will probably take care of a few possibilities at once.

Hey, actually, I just found this article:
http://www.slackwiki.com/Broadcom_Wireless

Mine is a BCM4322 I believe. I might check it out later then.

Archlinux and openbox is pretty informative, you got a lot of setup to do, so grab a tutorial and get the install done.
And try to do everything via console, learn all the basics commands like ls, cd, cp, rm... As well as you package manager.

Unironically Gentoo.
