I don't know.

I got a ~$4000 dream build idea I want, but would need a proper machine shop to make some of the custom parts (full case heat sink integration). Wonder if I should just pay a good company to custom build it with more standardized parts, that would be far less work, but I would need to pick a good company. As such a big build would need to last me for many years.

Some cheap netbook for Linux, but wonder if it is worth it as none of them have much RAM which I would need to offset other things.

Or some newer used cheap desktop to mess with, seen some decent ones for ~$300. But I got a older one for free and think it will work fine once I get it to boot from USB.

So no real purchase plans, just ramblings right now.

Apple has not really been updating their Microsoft driver support, it not the biggest problem from what I know, but I haven't been updating like most and suspect it could be an issue to look into.

(I got a 2009 MBP running Windows 7 off of Lion, it actually ran sightly better with Snow Leopard as base support OS)

I know my mouse drops in hibernate, so I changed all hibernate conditions to sleep and moved on with life. But I was annoyed on principles and suspect these things will get worse over time if new stuff doesn't get proper support.

While I like their hardware I think you are making this more complicated and expensive then you need to. I know am not paying for Apple next time, as I had a amazing setup but updates slowly washed away the glory it had. It still works fine, but not like it did.

I am THIS fucking close to getting one of those gold or rose gold 12-inch Macbooks with the Retina screen, and I know I'm in dire need of an intervention.

But what else is there to buy? I need a light, quiet, and durable notebook that's ultra-portable and runs an OS that isn't made for babies. As bad as OS X may be, at least it's not fucking Windows 10. I hate what Microsoft has done with the thing.

And Linux, I don't know but sure while I'm open to using it on the Macbook, I figure it's going to be loads better to just run with El Capitan.

So what do I do? I've been through netbooks, laptops, ThinkPads, and I've tried Macbooks before. But I really can't see an alternative to the base level 12-inch Macbook with the Core m3, that will only cost me around $1299.

Can anyone name me a better laptop for the money? For context, I'll need it for writing (lots and lots of writing), some web site coding, and light entertainment (Source games? Definitely watching movies).

Help me /g/

Then I can buy either a new smartphone or a new tablet. Or, if I'm lucky, a bendable tablet that turns into a smartphone that isn't Xbox hueg.

Also, once Zen is out, I can gauge if I should go Intel or AMD for my CPU upgrade to something that isn't shit, as well as switching to DDR4. Currently running a Celeron.

Computer upgrade, most likely GPU.

Gotta finally get rid of this house fire 8800GT and stop being so Jewish. Hoping AMD isn't memeing me to death, but I'm gonna wait for some real-world benchmarks and temperatures before I make the jump. Worst case I bite the bullet and get a used 980.

I'm trying not to spend too much more than $700 but
I'm looking for a laptop for graduate school that's 13"-14" with a nice and functional design, that includes the mouse pad much better than my current shit laptop (I'm looking at you Sony vaio E series) and SSD.
I also need decent performance for occasional light gaming with emulators and general multi tasking with browsers. If windows, I prefer to have an option of windows 7 pro or home, whatever it takes to get away from 10. Right now this lenovo think pad 13(pic related) is the only P.C. that seems to fit. I'm not 100% sure about the mouse pad design though. I'm also looking at Asus Zenbook UX305UA, which is touch screen and a refurbished mac book air on Amazon or the apple store.

In actual fact I was at the ASUS HQ in Taipei, Taiwan when I went to Computex this year, and in the lobby they had one of the UX305's on the display. It's here in the photo. I tried it, it looked good from afar but really after 1-2 seconds up close and under scrutiny it just doesn't hold up.

Sure, it's thin and light. But it's also built with much of the same flimsy plastic found on much cheaper laptops. The keyboard has been awful since the very first Zenbooks, which I also got to witness and experience. The trackpad is big but it's shit.

I didn't come here to bash on Asus, mind. Just saying my thoughts on what most people probably think of when they try to come up with a Macbook alternative that's cheap and accessible. The Asus marketing machine is impeccable.

The trackpad is pretty much standard fare for a Windows notebook. It's like what I said with the keyboard, it's not that much different from what you'll find even on those old Atom netbooks.

Even on the metal models as >>55093140 mentions, the disappointing keyboard and trackpad are still there. I'm using an Acer laptop right now that's probably worth around $300. And I can't tell for certain that typing on the UX305 would be an upgrade in terms of user experience.

I'm the OP and I agree with the guy that said 12-inch is the perfect laptop size. I've used an X200 and X201 before, and that had a 12-inch screen. Only thing that sucks about the older ThinkPads and prevents me from just getting another one (I sold my old one to begin with), is the awful LCD screen with the now embarassingly low resolution 1280x800 panel, not to mention the abysmal battery life.

I wish Lenovo didn't fuck with the original Thinkpad design too much. And with the newest Thinkpads I'm pretty sure i'd need to spend about double the price of the 12-inch Macbook to reach the same kind of battery life. And it wouldn't be as light and portable.

At this point I'm willing to live with the trade-offs of low power and having to use Mac just to avoid the bulk and need to stay close to a power outlet and Windows 10, even if it means learning a new workflow on my computer.

>>
>>55100061
How much? I think its a waste of money. Core 2 Duos are shitty and your current one should fit for light office work / Linux. If you want more, gayming or running VMs look out for some i5/i7 notebook.

I had a T8100 C2D myself, this thing even ran ME3 on low. 1600x900 is a good resolution for such a dated notebook. Possibly 17", but note that a 15" 1080p screen can compete my 28" 4K one in terms of DPI.
>>
>>55100142
both are in the 40$ ballpark, being so cheap is the only reason that I'm even considering upgrading this laptop instead of just saving up my money for longer and buying a better laptop.
>>
>>55100216
You won't notice anything from the CPU. If you don't play games or do anything CPU intense you should stay with your current CPU, that should also save battery life.

40$ for a screen sounds OK and you can sell the old one. 1080p is more useful than a shitty CPU and you can watch movies in their native resolution then.

I'm in the same situation here.
It just seems like the best machine available right now. The only thing preventing me from buying it right away is the price tag; if they lowered it down to the price of the Macbook Airs I would've bought it by now.

I am using a laptop with Windows 7 right now because of all the bullshit that MS has been doing. I wish I could find a Macbook alternative but I just can't.

The screen, the fanless design, and track pad, and the keyboard is really no issue for me.

Honestly, I don't think there's anything wrong with the Macbook itself. There's really nothing to be apprehensive about except for the price.
The processor might be a bit underpowered, but from the times I've tried it, it seems to work fine and efficiently, even on kinda demanding tasks. You won't be rendering full Pixar movies on it anyways.
Also, you're right, the screen, the fanless design, and the trackpad are all top notch, and the portability is unbeatable.
I've seen a lot of people bitch about the keyboard online bu it's one of my favorite features.

There probably won't be a good alternative to it if all Apple's competitors try to do is out-Apple Apple by lazily increasing specs while missing the point of the Macbook, like the Zenbook3. The only good alternative I can think of is the XPS 13, but I really don't need a touchscreen on a laptop.

>Dell XPS 13

I wanted that for a while as well, but I like the first version better than the current one. And the glare is unbearable for me, that all-glass display section also makes it so top-heavy as to turn me off.

It looks like I'm dead set on the Macbook, Im just about $200 off.

I can get one for around £180. In that price range I'm looking at chromebooks or used laptops. Seems like a good deal.

The new one is ditching the function keys for an OLED touch strip, and is also ditching USB-A ports for USB-C. The 2015 model is shaping up to be the last good one.

How is that an issue, its just more bullshit Apple beauty over function. Not like I am going to be using the function keys a great deal on a facebook/4chan machine.

Just bought a GTX 1080, new set of RAM to max out my board, new case, and new 1440p/144hz/G-Sync monitor I think I am good on upgrades for this build.

I am either looking at a 4+ TB HDD to add to my media server, a new desk chair that is a little more comfortable then what I currently have, or parts for a NAS server build if I see some good deals.

I'm going to upgrade my desktop.
Currently running a GTX970 with a Pentium G3258.
I'm fine with my graphics card since it's handles all of my needs fine, however, the CPU is a bit of a muppet.

Either a GTX 980 of the R9 480 depending on benchmarks for a GPU upgrade. And a regular hard drive and maybe some quieter case fans
>>
>>55111794
oh, the choice of CPU?

well i bought a shitty lga 1150 motherboard, and i wanted a decent but cheap processor for it

the guidelines were:
>new
>cheap
>lga 1150

Tada, pentium.
I dont want a celeron because i dislike the name, i dont want an i3/5/7 because im broke, and i like that specific pentium because its 3.3ghz

i dont intend to overclock so i dont want to spend the extra 10$ for the g3258

the thinkstation im building in use to have a pentium 4, all my thinkpads have pentium m's and one has a pentium 3, my old shitposting machine had a pentium 2 and my runescape machine used a pentium extreme

so i dont see why i shouldnt go pentium now, pentiums are all ive known
