Seriously you dumb niggers, "safely remove/unmount" wasn't put there by the OS designers just for the lulz.
>>
>>55085282
Dumbass, you DO have to safely eject.
Flash drives are slow, and because of this, the OS caches all write operations to the flash drive in RAM, and slowly gets around to commiting them to the flash drive.
If you write a bunch of shit to the flash drive and suddenly eject, you just corrupted all your data.

Safely-eject simply forces the OS to commit all cached writes RIGHT NOW so you can eject it safely.

I was helping some lady install chrome on her computer and she wanted me to transfer over her firefox bookmarks. I opened up firefox to export out the bookmarks and around 30 tabs opened. After i exported the bookmarks I closed firefox, and then she flipped her shit. She said those tabs had been important to her and that she's gonna have to go and find them all again and that it'd take hours. I used firefox's restore recent tabs feature and opened them all back up again, to which she said that those weren't all the right tabs. I apologized and asked her what she did when she needed to close Firefox, and she showed me that she just restarted the computer (Firefox was set to reopen all previous tabs). Anyway, I kept apologizing and then transferred over the bookmarks.

>>
>>55086594
Honestly, no, I haven't bothered keeping up to date on the dumb ways Windows handles mounting and unmounting drives.

But either way, it's still good to properly eject it to keep good habits. If you eject but don't need to, you've lost nothing but maybe a second of your time and the trivial effort of a couple of mouse clicks. If you don't eject but it turns out you did need to, you might have fucked the data on the drive.

But hey, no skin off my nose what you do. Just don't go giving me shit for doing things properly, even if it might not be absolutely necessary.
>>
>anon I'm canceling my internet subscription because I was notified that I had been hacked.
>>
>>55085014
In Linux, OS X you probaby get some file corruption if you write to the drive and pull it out after it says it has copied everything, it usually is still operating even if you can't tell.

In Windows it depends if you're setting it as quick removal or performance, if it's performance, it's basically the same as with Linux, it shows you it has copied everything but actually it just buffered the files to memory and is still transferring them to the drive.

Wasn't /g/ supposed to be full of programmers and shit?

FUCK OFF TECH ILLITERATE KEKS

Safety removal was a meme created by Microsoft. Enjoy your Red Pill.

>Microsoft figured that 99.5% of users who make a transfer to a flash drive don't disconnect it immediately.
>So to fake improvements in magical Microsoft optimization, they lied about the rate of transfer.
>Meaning the transfer would display as finished while still continuing in the background.
>Of course, users that did disconnect immediately after the transfer displayed complete would have corrupted data.
>Hence the birth of the safety eject, which would display "not safe to eject" if background transfers were still taking place.
>Microsoft was fairly quick to remove this in later iterations of Windows, along with the safety eject as a whole.
>Old timey users complained and demanded it be brought back so their data won't be corrupted, hence that's why it's still around today.

There's literally no reason to use safety eject anymore, its just to keep Normie's from panicking.

Also, as a hard drive fills up it gets heavier, slowing down the rotational speed, further slowing down file access. When a 7200RPM drive is 95% full, it will slow down to about 2100RPM, thats how heavy the magnetic data is.

Things have changed a little; these days typically if you hit the power button that'll trigger the operating system's shutdown, rather than immediately cutting the power. Back in the day it was a hard power button, so you needed to manually shut down via the OS first.

>>
>>55087639

Christ, anon, don't take the bait if you don't know what you're talking about.

Drives slow down as they get full because of the way they store data. They generally don't store all of a file in one place, it's split up according to its internal logic. When the drive fills, the available spaces to store those bits are further and further apart, so it can't optimize their placement.

It's faster to find a whole book series if they're on one bookshelf than scattered throughout the library.

ah yes the crucial plot point I missed was geek squad installing windows and formatting his partition labeled specifically not to be touched, costing him some kind of important work I believe.

I had a similar experience with my first desktop, my SSD died and I didn't know what was wrong at the time, so I said fuck it and took it to best buy so they could find out which part was fucked.

we found out it was the SSD, and I said fuck it, I'll buy a new HDD (SSDs were kind of expensive at the time and mine died within a year so I figured I'd wait a generation or two before I got another), and I was like fine, just install Windows on this HDD and leave my second HDD alone. I came back and found I had an empty 2tb Raid set up instead of the two 1TB disks functioning separately.

luckily I was a NEET at the time and of lost games I could redownload and movies I had already watched.

tl/dr even if you only barely know what you are doing, best buy will do the opposite of what you want
>>
>>55087864

With age the motor could lose its oomph I suppose. It wouldn't have anything to do with the platters though, unless something got loose inside the drive.

Sometimes I hate working as a tech, people are always asking me what antivirus I use. I don't use any because I'm not a dumbass. Plus I work with computers, on the off chance I do get something I have portable virus scanners coming out of my ears, I don't have to install shit.
>>
>>55088201
When I first started my last job, I used to tell people that I used linux so I wouldn't know what the best Windows AV was. But then I realized how autistic that sounded from a PC salesman. Then I would just recommend an AV that we didn't sell (MBAM) or NOD32 if it was onsale.

I can't tell you how many PCs came into the store with viruses though that had a "free" version of mcafee or an expired version of norton though. Both of those AVs are trash.

>comes back, i go home after a few days
>he calls me and tells i fucked up his pc
>tfw when the monitor has a yellow vertical line across the middle of the screen
>not ever turned it on or stayed near it
I always fix everything on his pc and tell him how to use it, and it always ends on him screaming that i dont know shit because someone on a clickbait article says otherwise.
Also later he brought the monitor to a rtv repair guy (i told him that its too fucked to repair at this point) and the repairman literally took away the control panel and change it to a broken one, so the mnitor is stuck on all the color/contrast "enchacing" modes.

Nah, still would corrupt data if you use cache and pull it just out.

Btw, just trusting the indicator LED if it has finished is shit, because it could have just paused the operation to quickly do something else.

Most people don't even know what data corruption is.
Sometimes it might be entire missing files and a corrupt MFT, other times it's just corruption at your mp4 video at 49:15 for 4 seconds.

Even now when i was eating my meal downstairs my dad kept asking me random shit relating to basic menial tasks in regards to browsing just because of the mere fact that i was physically present and within reach.

Basically without me the whole core IT infrastructure of my family and their business would break down and would have to be rebuilt from scratch by some expensive outside contractor, and this does give me a sense of power also

I was talking about this:

>Wasn't /g/ supposed to be full of programmers and shit?
>>
I dunno.

My immediate family always trusts me, especially my mom and dad, I say something about a computer and it's basically taken as the word of God by them. Hell, my dad even noticed that the family computer is making some noise and said "It's just a fan on the case, noise definitely isn't hard drive or the processor fan, we should change it", so he's actually nowhere near completely illiterate. Mom is completely IT-illiterate, however.

My sister's kinda cocky. She downloads random dll's from dlldownloadsite.ru onto my uncle's computer so she can play MUH LEAGUE there, and I keep telling her not to do it, but she says "IT'S ONLY DATA, DATA CAN'T GIVE YOU VIRUSES, ONLY PROGRAMS". Tried to explain what a dll was and why she was wrong, didn't listen, oh well.

Family tends to know that I'm capable. One time he and his son bought the same computer from the same store, hard drive full of bad sectors on cousin's one and my uncle described the typical symptoms on his. Must have been a bad batch of drives, offered to change them without charging for my time since he's a pretty cool uncle. Decided to take it to a shop, got it back a week later and jewed out of $400 ("But the guy at the shop said he had to change the cables too").

One of my cousins was forced to either get a job or get a degree, so he started some CS/CE meme pseudo-major at uni. People started asking him for help, he dropped out half a year later and is now studying to be a history teacher, family's back to me.

>>
>>55089531
BIOS password would stop people from booting from their own devices and installing operating systems without the password.
Lock on the case would stop someone just taking the hard drive out and installing an OS on it on a different computer.
You're protecting the hard drive.
>>

>>

> from booting from their own devices
oh right, well except if you defaulted to that order so he doesn't have to change it
>>
>>55089681
It's true, of course the amount of extra gas consumed depends on the car model and ac unit.
My old car would raise engines' activity to a minimum in order to supply the AC unit with enough power.
>>
>>55087618
My old TV could never read the movie files when I did not safely eject the usb drive after copying the file onto it with my computer.

Why is that?
>>
>>55089681
It does. AC compressor are parasitic.
>>
>>55089681

air conditioner =/= hot air blower

the second one is just waste heat from the engine so you could have your windows open and blow hot air into your face without any problem.

AC on on the other hand might make your engine need around 1 liter more gas on 100km for example.

I do the same thing and don't feel bad in the slightest. I charge a fraction of what it would cost to take it to a shop. Why would you?

there are file system structures which record folder structure, file+folder attributes, names, physical location of the actual file data etc.
if these data structures get corrupted your files your file can still be on the drive, but if you have no idea where exactly they are you won't be able to use any of them.

You cannot trust that the state of the disk is actually what the OS claims it is, only that it will logically act like it is in that state.

you can corrupt the file system, but if you reformat the device it works as good as new
if the USB spec doesn't allow arbitrary removal that's absolutely retarded as it's common practice(and officially supported) to remove devices without telling the OS, heck, for anything other than storage devices you CANT even tell the OS to "safely eject"
