Post small or dumb questions here, someone will probably answer you! This thread is for questions that dont deserve their own thread as they would not inspire discussion.

My questions here:
>where can i find windows xp 64 bit with a key
>what spraypaint works good on galvanized steel
>>
What thread do I go to to ask about flight sticks/racing wheels? What about VR shite?

Please don't say /v/.

From Wikipedia : On 28 December 2014, Der Spiegel published slides from an internal NSA presentation dating to June 2012 in which the NSA deemed... privacy tools such... TrueCrypt... as "catastrophic," leading to a "near-total loss/lack of insight to target communications, presence..."

Am I the only one that thinks the gov shut down tc with false claims of security flaws. Also, tc recommends bitlocker, given the recent botnet fiasco with ms, wouldn't this be a play by NSA to get gullible idiots to migrate to a backdoored software?

I've been there my dude, I usually turn on some cozy background noise and play a relaxing, low stress video game. My Oculus Rift is arriving tomorrow and I only have an Nvidia 750. I was waiting for the 1070/480 to become available before I upgraded but I wanted to use my Oculus as soon as it arrives.

What I was thinking of doing was ordering a 970 off of amazon, then returning it for a full refund once the 1070/480 becomes available. Now I don't want to get somehow stuck with a 970 that I can't return so do you think I could run into any problems doing this?

Thank you my friends.

but yes, you should
the cases are beautiful, and have fantastic airflow and most of them have a panel below the motherboard that allows you to tuck cables underneath it safely
its a dream for cable management

i got some shitty biostar micro atx board, a zotac gt430 (needed VGA), 8gb of hyperx blue, and a kit of misc screws and such (because half the fucking motherboard hex risers were fused to the screws and were a bitch to remove)

next paycheck im going to get an evga 430w psu, a pentium g3260 and some SSD
overall, the whole build is costing me less than 250$, as i already have the stock case fans, the pentium 4 heatsink fits lga1150 motherboards, and the HDD uses Sata II so i can use that alongside the SSD

I'll repost this since the old thread died shortly after I posted it there.

So I've been thinking about making my condo into a "smart home". The core of this would be IFTTT for connecting everything together and programming the devices to do scheduled and predefined tasks, while an Echo Dot would be used for controlling it as needed and be a sort of hub for all of these devices (smart lights, smart lock, etc) to run through.

I want an Echo Dot instead of a normal Echo because of its ability to use external speakers. I want to be able to have a speaker in every room so that I don't have to have the Echo at full blast just to hear it in the room over, I can hear it evenly throughout my condo at a reasonable volume.

Basically what I'm wondering is if you guys have any recommendations for a speaker solution that would do what I'd want it to do. I'm thinking a receiver next to the Echo Dot with wireless speakers throughout my home, but I'd have no idea where to start when it comes to finding good ones.

Nah, I got the the mATX version, the power supply is top mounted and the layout it average at best. I'd have to modify it to have a front intake, as it has a single 3.5" drive bay that's accessable from the front instead of an intake.

The crossfired 390s would outpace a 1070 at a cheaper pricepoint (since you're only buying one), but there's always the issue of games needing Crossfire support for you to take advantage of that.

A 1080 will still beat that setup.

They generally overestimate by a safe margin. Look at Anandtech's bench for your GPU. AT benches with an overclocked 130W hex core, so if you're running just a standard consumer desktop processor you're going to be under their max load.

This thread is geared towards hardware that will run FreeNAS. FreeNAS is designed primarily as a storage server ("Free (as in freedom) Network Attached Storage"), but it can also run "jails" (think VM's) that run Plex (video transcoding), ownCloud (remote file access), and Transmission.

https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/hardware-recommendations-read-this-first.23069/

If you end up deciding not to use FreeNAS and run a Linux distro instead, the guide is still valid, but you can ignore the emphasis on ECC memory.
>>
>Reposting because nobody replied the first time

I was sent a .mov movie file. The audio cuts off after the first like ten seconds (at a consistent time) for the rest of the video. If I skip past it, the audio will play and then cut off again at seemingly random times. I can listen to cut off parts by skipping ahead, so I know the audio is there somewhere. Something is just telling it to switch off. It generally looks like it syncs up with a spike in noise level? Again, I know the audio is there so this isn't like a noise filter that activated when it was recorded.

I've never had this issue before so I don't really know how to troubleshoot. I tried playing it through different programs, and the same thing happened for each.

Apparently it plays fine all the way through for them.

What's going on here?
>>
>>55084655
There's no benchmarks out for the specific card I want, but their site says 230w and recommends a 500w PSU too. I think as long as I don't raise the voltage I'll be fine.

There's a lot of different ways to do it. It depends on how you want to store stuff and how much you're trying to protect.
I'd probably just recommend copying shit you want to date-named directories on an external HDD,
Personally, I copy the files I care about to an archive, then compress it, generate parity and burn it to DVDs.

I'm playing an old game that only supports 800x600 resolution in windowed mode. If I use an external program to make the window resizable, it only makes the window itself bigger and not the game assets inside it - in other words, the game window stays the same size and the rest of the window fill with black space.

Is there a program of some kind I can use to be able to "stretch" the window to a larger size? I don't mind if it gets blurrier. Already tried resizeeverything and Scott's Window Resizing Utility.

>>55085698
If that's your question, the answer is no. As long as that drive isn't set as your boot medium, it won't matter what OS is installed on it. If you want to select your boot device use your BIOS settings.

However if you have no intention of using the drive to boot anymore and just want to use it for storage from now on, I'd delete unnecessary Win7 files from the drive just to make more room.

You didn't honestly consider moving into the closet so you could play your eroge, did you?

This is the best solution I can think of. You will either need a bigger desk to waste less space, or find something to stuff in the area behind it. Pick up some plants and those can obscure the vision, and the closer the monitor is to the bed the less light you'll get and the less they can see.

Also consider putting those hippy beads in front of your doors.

I don't see it being that hard to understand. You're basically saying "for this amount of time, do this"

Obviously you are actually specifying a conditional instead of a timer, but in practice a for loop is usually used to count a certain number of iterations, so I think it still fits.

What's a good quality 1080p60 IPS monitor? Preferably with FreeSync?

Do I have to shell out for a Dell Ultrasharp if I want a quality panel? No FreeSync on Ultrasharps though...
>>
For displays:

IPS or TFT?
>>
>>55089300
Those two things aren't even in the same category. All modern LCD displays are "TFT".

What you should be asking is "IPS or TN?", and the answer is IPS. TN is pure trash.
>>
>>55089308
Can you explain why TN is trash?

I keep seeing that TN is bad because it has bad viewing angles but I don't want to look at my monitor from any other angle besides directly in front anyway?
>>
>>55089319
Even if you shift in your chair the colors change
Even if you're looking at the center of the screen straight on you're still viewing the edges at an angle
>>
>>55089319
>but I don't want to look at my monitor from any other angle besides directly in front anyway?

Viewing angles can be so bad that you'll get color shift even looking at your monitor head-on, as the outer edges of the display are at a different angle to the inner part of the display. A decent TN panel shouldn't be _that_ bad though.

The other reason to avoid TN is the pathetic blacks (blacks often look like cloudy blue-grey on a TN, whereas IPS panels are able to produce much truer blacks) as well as the generally lower quality colors.
>>
>>55089331
Is the difference between TN and IPS huge?

Also, the reason I ask about TFT earlier is because I can't seem to find what type of display my monitor is:

https://www.cnet.com/products/hannspree-hf-237hpb-lcd-monitor-23/specs/

It only says TFT.

What if I got a 144hz TN Display. Is that bad?
>>
>>55089343
>Is the difference between TN and IPS huge?

At the lower range it's phenomenal. I went from a $100 TN monitor to a $150 IPS and the difference was mind-bending. Well worth the money. The TN display looks like a hunk of dog shit next to the IPS, and this is just a BUDGET IPS.

>Also, the reason I ask about TFT earlier is because I can't seem to find what type of display my monitor is:

>It only says TFT.

Pro-tip: if something isn't explicitly marketed as IPS/PLS/VA, it's TN. TN isn't a selling point so they never advertise it.

>>

>>
>>55089353
They still look like trash, but if you purchased a 144hz monitor chances are you're using it for CSGO so you wouldn't care about the visual quality anyway.
>>
>>55089360
>PLS
The monitor I'm planning to get is this.

Is PLS better than IPS?

Here's the monitor I plan on getting:
https://www.asus.com/Commercial-Monitors/PB258Q/

I've used 1080p my whole life and I hope to jump to 1440p will blow my mind. Do you think it will with this panel?
>>
>>55089377
PLS is just a type of IPS
>>
>>55089377
PLS is Samsung's IPS, it's the same thing. They just call it PLS because IPS was patented by LG. Also applies to AU Optronics' "AHVA" displays, which are again basically the same as IPS.

1440p will provide more screen real estate, but the real mind blowing aspect will be going from TN to IPS. That will be immediately noticeable.
>>
>>55089369
Would you say someone that buys a 1080p144hz TN panel for singleplayer games is dumb?

http://ccm.net/faq/2471-how-to-purge-the-windows-update-cache#simili_main

I would, but that's your preference. I personally wouldn't enjoy single player gaming on a TN panel, only time I would use a 144hz panel would be for competitive multiplayer FPS like TF2 where the edge makes a difference.

I would recommend saving up for a more expensive 144hz + IPS monitor if you want to go down that road. TN is just nasty.

I doubt anyone will know the answer or read this anyway.

About a year ago my (4 or 5 year old build) computer bluescreen'd. I took it to a phoney repairman who took 4 days to "check out everything" before coming back to me with the wrong answer. I eventually took it to a trusted repairman in another town.
When I got it back it ran much hotter running the same games and tasks (no more Inquisition for me). After moving to hot Florida it's gotten worse to the point where using Crome takes the CPU to 54 - 64C. It's absurd.
Changing graphic settings on games doesn't seem to make a difference. I dust, cable manage, and AC my apartment like crazy.

I'm going to get a 212 evo and some Corsair casefans. But I expect to meet with failure.
