The rx480 is $200/$230 (8GB) and performs better than the GTX 980, i.e. it's significantly cheaper for the same performance. It also uses a fuckload less power and is stated to overclock extremely well, reaching fury levels of performance when OC'd.

Objectively you can't say nvidia isn't fucked.
480 is said to have the perf of a 390X - 980, which is impressive for a $230 GPU even if it reach $250 it will still be impressive.
Compared to that the 1070 is $450 and you don't have the same performance boost the RX 480 have.
The 1060 will probably have that similar performance boost the 1070 have, so you can expect it to have the perf of a 390.
Think of it one second. Polaris isn't even using HBM2, it only cost $200 and the performance boost is amazing. Imagine what vega will achieve. the 1070 and 1080 will be garbage compared to the vega line.
I seriously hope nvidia are working on something that will compete with those cards, because for now, I'll just wait and buy an AMD GPU. My 280X can still run most games in high in linux with the free drivers.

Take into account that 85% of the desktop GPU market is in the $100-$300 range and that AMD has once again locked up the "next" generation of console parts, Nvidia may truly be fucked, more and more games will switch to DX12/Vulkan where AMD cards shine and as more consoles take advantage so too will PC games, Nvidia will very likely begin to see a decline in market share because AMD is definitely stepping up their game
