thoughts on WiFi hotspots?
i have to live on a fucking ranch outside of the city for the rest of the year and i get 150kb/s if i'm LUCKY. it regularly fluctuates and every single multiplayer game i own is unplayable at this point. no choice to upgrade or get different internet.
Luckily I have unlimited data from verizon still, but i've tried tethering my data with Easytether to play vidya and i get weird problems (CSGO for example, will work totally fine for 10 or so mins and then all characters will stop moving and then a few mins later i get disconnected)
are there any other options for me or am i fucked /g/? should i just buy a laptop and start hunting down free wifi?
You're probably fucked. I would never expect gaming on a hotspot to be a fun time.

It's hell, but it's my only choice for the next year, I was hoping there was some other weird way I hadn't thought of before.

I occasionally game on a Verizon hotspot and cam barely tell the difference from my regular BB connection. But if you still have unlimited data from VZ, then you're probably on 3G and still getting throttled after using a few gigs right?

It's definitely doable, I've done it before.
Unfortunately, in most cases where in-line internet is bad, so is the mobile data reliability.
I've done it and it's acceptable, but the only time it's been a usable connection is when I'm in a busy area that has just as good internet from the nearest mcDonalds or starbucks.
I've heard that some american providers load plans so that you get disconnected after a certain amount of data is reached, I don't know how true this is because I live in Europe nowadays, where 4g isn't reliable anywhere and unlimited plans are far and few between.

My phone says 4G, and when downloading I get about 5mb/s. It works totally fine downloading things, no throttling as far as I can tell and I regularly go over 100GB a month. It seems to only affect gaming, and once in a blue moon video streaming, but that could just be shitty youtube servers.

Well I get pretty OK 4G where I live, it's on a ranch but it's not far out from the city, but it's past a riverbed so I can't get any Internet connection besides the worst verizon dial up.
