I have a 290x 8GB right now with a 4k monitor and some newer games I have to either tone down the graphics or lower the resolution to 1440p. Would the 490X be good enough for 4k gaming? I was thinking either that or saving up for a GTX 1080.
the 480 will do very well for 1440p. if you want to pay almost double for similar performance, get a 1070. A 1080 for 1440p would be slightly overkill for the price but meh. it's your money

4k must be fucking magical because if I had the extra power I'd push for higher framerates with all of the effects maxed out over pure resolution.

What happens if I'm not going to play next gen games, and just want something that cheap and affordable? I have had experience with nvidia, but I was thinking of getting the new 480 8gb version for my newer build. Should I do it and see what happens or save up a little more to get a 970/980?
