Why are you even surprised?
Apple pull this shit all the time.
It's not even the worst that they've done.

Their Intel transition ended in late 2006 and Snow Leopard dropped support for PPC in 2009.
That's three fucking years for brand new computers.

That's ignoring the fact that they are generally dicks to their loyal cocksucking customers anyway (see shit like 'unsupported superdrives' and pay-to-unlock 802.11n).
>>
>>55069318
Why not just buy a celery netbook? It'll be much faster and have better battery life than your macbook without costing much.
>>
>>55069612
I need Xcode for iOS development.

Hackintosh on a laptop is a nightmare.
>>
>2008
I think it's bullshit that support needs to be "granted," but at the same time I'm hardly surprised by the insinuation that your eight year old laptop isn't made to handle a 2016 OS made to be accessible for small children.
>>
Who cares? It's not like these could run Yosemite well without being bogged down even after ram upgrades.
>>
>>55069318
Are you really expecting almost a decade old hardware to run the latest OS? Get a fucking Macbook Air, it'll be enough for you if you could live with that piece of shit of yours for so long.

My 2009 macbook pro has been going strong so saddened to hear about this. How is the Linux support? I was considering putting Ubuntu/Xubuntu onto it once El Capitan security support is dropped.
>>
>>55069717
This, although adding a SSD does wonders. I was driving a 2009 white Macbook with El Capitan just fine after I added a SSD, until I pulled it so I could put it on a newer 2012 MBP. Now it runs Mavericks instead.
>>
>>55069765
The buntus generally support macs quite well. You may have to hunt for wifi drivers after installing, but it should be fine after that.
>>
>>55069717
Mine works fine with El Capitan.

I did add more RAM and SSD though.
>>
>>55069765
I had Xubuntu on mine. It's alright. Like >>55069842 said, Wifi might be a bit of a bitch to get working at first, and I also had to dick with the ALSA settings so I had sound coming out of both speakers, but otherwise it was pretty solid, and overall booted and functioned faster than OSX did. Battery life was markedly worse, though, and it runs hotter as well.

>>
>>55070248
>Experience is flawless in El Capitan, I don't see why it would go from that to ass in one version.
It's possible that they've been holding back resource-intensive changes for years and this is just the breaking point, so they figured if they're going to break compatibility for one thing they might as well make a big, clean break. Python did this with the 2x->3x jump; they avoided making big changes until there were enough warts that needed to be addressed, and made a huge jump that Python developers might have described as "bone-breaking". but now the bone is re-setting, and hopefully for the better, in the long term.

Alternatively, they could have found that some feature is just too shitty on older machines. Let's say the user experience of using Siri on a 2008 MBP is ~85% of the user experience on their "reference" device (most likely a not-yet-released 2016 rMBP)*. If their threshold (below which they wouldn't be okay releasing it) is 90%, then they can do the following:
1) delay the launch until they can optimize Siri further (which may not be doable in a year or even two)
2) just accept the performance being shit on some devices but good on others (but Apple seems not to like doing that, and consumers seem to feel the same way)
3) drop support (which is what they did.

*I'm using some arbitrary function to come up with a percentage. Maybe it's determined by the number of milliseconds it takes to process the speech. Maybe it's a combination of that and other stuff. We don't know, and it doesn't *really* matter unless you doubt the premise that older hardware would run software worse than newer hardware.

Honestly, I wouldn't want to run Windows 10 on a laptop from 2007/2008 either, even if it is technically possible. In any case, having close to a decade between new laptops isn't doing too badly. And there's always Linux if you want to keep up-to-date software on old hardware, though you might have to be a bit selective about DE/WM
>>
>>55070339
>2) just accept the performance being shit on some devices but good on others (but Apple seems not to like doing that, and consumers seem to feel the same way)

They don't though, iOS 4 on iPhone 3g, iOS 6 on 3GS, iOS 9 on 4s, 10.7 on the first gen MBA, etc... ran like crap.

You just have to grab the hdd from the mac, put it in a "hackintosh compatible" pc and install the os with unibeast in that pc. Then you can put the hdd back in the mac and boot.
I tried to install el capitan with unibeast directly in che mac, but the installation is blocked.

Are you forced to upgrade? Do Apple brick laptops when they can no longer support the latest OS? Do they not just let you be with your still functional machine?

Learn the fucking definitions of phrases before you use them you dumb cunt. If you're a poorfag bastard who's using a 9 year old laptop as a daily driver and STILL want to use the latest OS then you're delusional and don't understand hardware or software.

For all the supposed greed of Apple the fact they supported a consumer grade laptop with upgrades for 8 years is incredible.

Its a tradeoff, its a waste of Apple's time to tailor things so they work on a 9 year old machine.

You don't grasp that windows is NOT tailored to ANYTHING, nobody is putting in work to make it run on thousands of SKUs of thousands of products and so can half-assed run on anything with enough power and an SSD.

Funny thing is that Windows is currently the lightest OS out there, even with all that backwards compatibility.
Runs nicely on 2GB Atom laptops, yet OSX Yosemite and Newer struggle even on a Sandy Bridge Air with 4GB of RAM. Windows is optimized as fuck these days.
A fresh install of Windows 10 takes up 3.7GB of HDD space, a fresh install of El Capitan takes up 27GB.

Actually, one thing I like about Apple is that they just move the fuck on. Instead of clinging to legacy bullshit for decades, they just drop it and fuck those five people who still use it for whatever weird reason. Legacy is good, but if you do it for too long, you just end up dragging everyone else down.

"Too long" is a matter of opinion. "Legacy" is also a matter of opinion. I would argue that OSX is intrinsically a "legacy system". So is every other major operating system. the amount of complete bullshit in this thread regarding sierra is amazing.

>>
>>55074642
Sierra is made for SSD based Macs. Look at APFS and other functionalities, even El Capitan made things better for SSDs (example: removal of Empty Trash Securely, added in Delete Permanently). It wouldn't be smart to use an SSD optimised OS on your HDD, since that could potentially cause problems. Hate to say it but it's time to move on to a new Mac if you want all the features with Sierra. Remember that Apple mocks people using hardware that's older than 5 years old.

welcome to apple. Shelling out for a new system every 2 years is expected, 4 years is acceptable, and 6 is where everything is going to go to shit and you are forced to buy everything.
>>
>>55076333
I'd like to think that my mid-2014 rMBP with 256GB of SSD space and 8GB of RAM was a good buy.

As far as hardware goes, I don't think it's going to stop being able to meet my needs, because Moore's Law has been having a hard time lately. And hell, even my mid-tier 2011 desktop PC is chugging along perfectly fine and I don't care about upgrading it.

For software, I am worried about being left behind and raped by unpatched CVEs on my rMBP. But by then I'll put Linux or FreeBSD on it or some shit.

well does your model T still get you from A to B?
your analogy just proves his point

a functional model T won't quite be as quick, or perhaps as efficient, but it performs the same function as any modern car. when you just want something that gets you between work, home, and the shops, and they're all reasonably close, it really doesn't matter what kind of car you have

>>
>>55078348

My analogy exactly proves my point which flew over your head.

Of course it can still work. It didn't disintegrate the moment another car was introduced (or in this case, the old Macs didn't vanish once a new OS appeared). That isn't the point. The point is, the car industry became one of the first industries to become bogged down with planned obsolescence. New model every year with basic upgrades. Makes people feel the need to continually buy buy buy. Gotta keep up with the new trends, features etc. It's a hallmark of capitalistic societies.

You can still use the old stuff, it's just you will not be getting any more new features & no new security updates. This is all an entirely artificial limitation as the hardware now has practically reached stagnation. It's not as if we're stuck on 133mhz processors that can't accelerate the latest emoji from Applel.

You have one OS made for Macbooks - the only difference in supporting old models should be drivers between devices. Even Windows is better in this regard as it has to fit between millions of different configurations without issue. How long has XP been going on all those different boxes out there?
