Are SSDs made of fucking gold?
Why are they so fucking expensive?
>>
lots of expensive r&d goes into ssd tech so that it can be cheaper in the short term.

ssds are already so much cheaper and better than they used to be

just give it time, hdds had the same problem and now they are dirt cheap
>>
>>55057070
That SSD weighs 4oz, therefore if it was made entirely of gold it would cost you around $5K.
>>
>>55057070
Considering the size the memory chips are probably the highest capacity ones available and thus the most expensive.
>>
>>55057161
Thank you Dwight
>>

I am pissed as well, but it takes some time to become cheaper. They are still trying to sell HDs as much as possible

>>
>>55057223
usb 3.0 saturates at 5Gbps = 625MBps

Even if you account for 50% overhead that's still 312.5 MBps, which is good enough for low/mid end SSDs

AFAIK there is no alternative high speed high volume data storage, so SSDs are as good as it gets for now.

Just change it to USB 3.1 and you're golden

If you just want storage and you're buying a fucking SSD you're doing it wrong.

You just don't know any better. Using a HDD based system is torture after accustomed to an SSD. It's one of the biggest quality-of-life improvements you can make to a computer.
>>
>>55057728

Not sensitive to drops or being thrown around. Makes perfect sense externally.
>>
>>55057791
I've used them, I just don't see what the big deal is. Wow now it loads slightly faster, big whoop. Maybe these millennials you speak of just have no patience.
>>
So is it retarded to use ONLY SSDs? I remember asking this question before and getting answers from two camps; that you could either pretty much never ever in your lifetime 'burn out' an SSD or that it would happen in less than two years. Which is it?
>>
>>55057728

You faggots are the most disgusting shitheads I've ever seen, you're always looking for flaws, ALWAYS.
You could get an ssd for $100 and you'd find something to complain about.

Here's a protip: stop being such poor, entitled, insufferable faggots.
>>
>>55057823
Buy Intel SSDs or Sandisk Ultras.

You will now never kill an SSD before you want to upgrade.

Don't touch samshit or kingston or any of that shit.
>>
>>55057823

The former
>>
>>55057853
Basically, my thought is that I currently have a 1TB HDD, which I don't even have half full; I uninstall games and shit when I'm done with it and a lot of my music is cloud based, so I just don't use a lot of room. I could easily get by with a 500GB SSD alone.

I guess I could get an SSD and keep the HDD as an emergency backup, but it's super old by now, I think I bought this fucker in like 2009.

>>
>>55057848

>>
>>55057823
Depends on the SSD. Old SSDs ran out of writes pretty quickly, but you're not going to run out of writes in a new quality SSD assuming TRIM is working correctly. That doesn't mean they won't fail eventually, it just won't be because the memory stopped being writeable.
>>
>>55057468
isn't 300mbps speed of Sata 3 HDD?
>>
>>55057877
By the time a good 500gb SSD actually dies, you'll be able to buy a 2tb for $50.
>>
>>55057903
It's more like 80-150 MBps, and only with linear read/write - seek time fucks your shit up once you start dealing with small/fragmented files.
>>
>>55057877
Next time you upgrade I would go 120gb ssd and 500gb hard drive though 240gb ssds aren't a big cost jump for double the space and often better performance

Faster and more durable than an HDD
>>
>>55057903
I've not seen a consumer hard disk that could sustain 300MB/s. 375MB/s is the limit of SATA 3, if that is what you were asking.
>>
>>55057903
WD blacks apparently max out at little over 200 MB/s for sustained read speed assuming you get a 5 or 6 TB one: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-771434.pdf

Note that that's the absolute maximum, in practice it's going to be slower than that except, perhaps, in ideal conditions. So the only way to get 300 MB/s sustained speeds would be to get a 10 000 RPM enterprise drive.

If you only need 500 GB of storage and aren't on poverty-tier budget, there's little point in getting a HDD(except for backups), let alone an SSD+HHD combo which will cost at least as much as the single 500 GB SSD would cost.

Or you stop being a pleb and go SSD in all your devices with a couple external HDD or a NAS to store you bulk data in.

There's no reason to not go 500gb, though. Gives you more space to work with (especially with retarded modern games needing 50gb despite having pathetic textures) and it'll last longer while often being quicker in terms of IOPS.
>>
>>55058118
>Or you stop being a pleb and go SSD in all your devices with a couple external HDD or a NAS to store you bulk data in.
That's my point dumbass. 240GB SSD in all your devices and you don't need anything more because you have your server. I excluded laptops because they're the one thing where you don't always have a high speed connection to your server.
>>
>>55058155
There's no reason to go 240 or 120 in anything, though. 500gbs last longer due to wear leveling, they generally have better IOPS which is what you actually feel (how often do you transfer shit big enough to use 500mb/s) and gives you the benefit of more usable room.

You're not going to run AAA games off a NAS, and if you want more than a few installed at a time 240/250 is no longer enough.
Shit, if halo 5 comes to the PC that fucker is like 70gb by the time everything's said and done.
>>
>>55058189
>There's no reason to go 240 or 120 in anything, though
Except for the part where you don't need more than 240GB since you've got an NAS
>You're not going to run AAA games off a NAS

>>
>>55058080

It's still magnitudes faster over a HDD and especially 2.5" HDDs.

>>
>>55058368
If you're just browsing and shitposting then don't bother with SSDs but if you actually work with your machine it pays off.

Anyone that does any kind of rendering, editing large video/audio/image files and the like will know and appreciate SSDs for what they can do.
>>

The fuck are you on about? An SSD is a worthy upgrade for any machine.
>>
>>55057194
>literally a regular ssd with a usb controller strapped to it and a case
>>
>>55058422
I know, I have SSDs in all my machines. For some people it really isn't that big of a deal though.

My mother for example leaves her laptop running mostly, the rest of the time it's in standby so she rarely cold boots it. It's almost pointless upgrading her HDD for example.

Even the lowered power consumption barely makes a difference as it's always plugged in anyway.

>>
>>55059262
The risk of a drive failing during array rebuild.
>>
>>55059308
Almost everything has overhead. That's why you will rarely get the full bandwidth as some of that bandwidth is used for things other than pure data transfer and some of it is just lost due to other reasons.

My sata II SSD tops out at like 250mb/s for example. It's quite shitty though so it might not even fully saturate it either.

An extreme example od this is wifi sync speed vs actual throughput.
>>
>>55059326
Hence why raid6 has two parity disks anon.

Also when you lose your raid array you shouldn't be worried about losing data, you should be worried about availability.
>>
>>55059326
RAID isn't a backup. While your array is rebuilding you should have already put in place either the backup or another live version of the data.

You don't fucking rebuild an array when you need the data you faggot.
