I have a question for Fidelio X2 owners. Recently when routinely cleaning my earpads I noticed a small puncture/hole about the size of a 3.5 mm plug ( I store my headphones with my cable inside a hardcase) on the driver screen of the left speaker. Do you think this would affect the sound in any way?

So i bought a pair of K701s the other week and i dont know if this is just them too loud or improperly Amped im Using the Built in Headphone jack on my Pioneer SX-750 anything with a large amount of Bass makes them shudder and Warbles all of the music and makes it sound like im listening to it through a fan is the issue that that Receiver has an issue With powering the K701s?

Anyone here already tested a pair of AKG K92?

Hey all. The only pair of headphones I've ever owned are the Logitech 930s.The charging cable just fucked up on me and I'm sick of dealing with issues when it comes to these headphones, both in parts and sound quality. So I'm looking to buy a new pair, but I have no idea where to start.

I'd say my budget is around 100, and a bit flexible. I'm in the US, i don't have an amp, want full sized headphones, not sure if I want open or closed because I've only tried closed so I'm open to suggestions. I'm going to be primarily using them for music, games, movies, and perhaps a bit of music/voiceover production down the line.

A couple of friends recommended Audio-Technica ATH-M50xs as a good pair to start with. Can you guys set me on the right track? Can i get a few recommendations on what to check out?

> not sure if I want open or closed because I've only tried closed so I'm open to suggestions.
Unless you mean to use headphones in noisy/public spaces, you should go for an open headphone.
>A couple of friends recommended Audio-Technica ATH-M50xs as a good pair to start with.
Meh, they're too bassy. If you really want a closed heapdhone, get the Sony MDR 7506/V6: it's been the standard heapdhone for music producers and listeners for many generations.
> Can you guys set me on the right track? Can i get a few recommendations on what to check out?
I suggest some dull-sized open headphones around 100$, which are fairly neutral and good for generally all purposes: Philips SHP 9500, AKG K240 Studio (or M220), Sennheiser HD518.

When you really care about the sound quality, fidelity, and pursue it actively.
There's the stereotypical image of someone listening to the sound of magic coat hangers, which makes people think twice about that kind of label.

The distortion performance of the k701 could be better, but headphone outputs on receivers tend to be of dubious quality. I'd suspect the receiver and attempt to test the headphone on something else.

I'm planning on buying myself a headset for traveling. Mostly plane trips, so I guess noice cancelling and wireless is something that I want.

Normally I use a DT770 Pro 80Ohm but Beyerdynamic support told me that the 80Ohm is very heavy to drive compared to the 32 and 250Ohm because of the overhang voicecoil compared to the 32 and 250Ohm's underhanged.

So far I've been looking at:

Bose QuiteComfort 25 and 35
Sony MDR-XB950BT
Cleer NC

Any suggestions?

Try your headphones with the phone/DAP?

You base your assessment off what beyerdynamic tells you instead of what your ears tell you? You have a perfectly good pair of headphones already.

is there a difference between the portapro and the KTC version with the mic and volume controller

But I want something that removes the exterior noice better and that are wireless.

Also, Beyerdynamic tells me that I will ruin the drives by using it on my phone.

They have had lots of repair cases because people uses the 80Ohms on phones because of the lack of power.

Laugh at your friends for recommending clamp gods. Get a NVX XPT100. You'll be hard pressed to find a more comfy headphone on the market today. It's also very soothing to listen to unlike the v-shaped monstrosity that is the M50/M50X.

As far as I can tell, they are both made the same and for $179 (as opposed to $300) you did get a good deal. However, there may be slight differences in the pads that come with the Gibson pair but overall the sound should be the same. Pic related, the lighter colored pads are the ones you may get, although their has been a recall of the headphones due to glued pads, I'm sure that they have stopped gluing the pads at this moment (atleast according to amazon)

I've been looking at the Brainwavz HM9, VModa M100, and the Sennheiser Momentum. I've been looking at these for a while now. I can get them even cheaper then the current discount but every review I look at says how great they are, but they don't answer my questions.

Are they any good for gaming and do they have surround sound? I'm trying to move away from headsets and I recently bought a 3 pack of cheap clip-on microphones and I really, really like the price of these headphones, but if they don't have surround sound then it might be a deal breaker.
>>
>>55069380
You should know that the only way to get "surround sound" over stereo is with a binaural recording

Surround sound is for speakers that are too big to strap to your ears

I'm sorry, I don't frequent this board enough to know what is and isn't considered meming. I only ask about the surround sound thing because I have a sony ps3 headset that I've been using for a few years now and I don't claim to know alot about audio, but I'm quite sure it has surround sound. Like, I can hear specific things in-game and pinpoint their location in a shooter for example.

Can the LyxPro series do that? I have this idea in my head that if a pair of headphones doesn't have what I percieve as surround sound then if I buy them for gaming then I won't be able to have the level of audio where I can close my eyes during a game of overwatch or w/e and be able to tell where everyone is by sound alone.

>>
>>55069667
Ok basically with speakers you have a bunch of drivers arranged around the room so that you perceive sound coming from around the room, and the speakers may use software to account for room shape, furniture, etc.

But you only have two ear-canals

So when you have two drivers up against your ears all that matters really is how it was recorded, not how many drivers there are

Those "surround sound" headphones don't work because they're one size fits all

If you had a sound engineer specifically design headphones with an arrangement of drivers to make use of the shape of your ears, you might be on to something but they would probably also be huge headphones

All you need is stereo pal

Ears aren't like eyes, they aren't watching where things come from. They filter the sound down and then your brain decodes it. That's why you can perceive more than one sound despite air only being there to vibrate for one frequency/signal. I added an image in case you were curious.

Pick up basically any stereo pair of headphones/earphones and listen to "virtual barber shop" on YouTube and you'll see why you only need two drivers. They record with one microphone on each side of a dummy head for each "ear"

If you want realism, look for literate reviewers possibly mentioning "soundstage" (how big the perceived sound is) and aim for a reasonably flat frequency response. Fflat is usually less "fun" and you won't be used to that unless you've heard professional audio equipment before.

>MDRV6
best overall sound quality and build IMO, especially in the tightness and impact of the bass and the detail of the upper mids/highs. second in comfort. needs eq, new pads eventually. isolation not so great, and soundstage is narrow, even for a closed headphone.

>ATH-M40x
best compromise. neutral (relatively). a tad more bass than the xpt-100. good soundstage and instrument separation. most portable, they fold and you can swap for short cable. isolation ok. worst comfort, not bad but needs big pads to prevent hot-spot.

>NVX XPT100
the choice if you want a neutral, closed, all-day headphone for home use. most bass light but only by a bit, with a slight mids notch but still neutral sounding, arguably more than m40x and v6. best comfort, but big and bulky with split long cable, not for portable use.

for just home desk use get xpt-100, for sometimes portable use get m40x. if you're "into headphones" and you want to know what they hype is about, v6.

A microphone and a coupler, at the most basic. You have a fair degree of flexibility with how you set up your coupler.
Strictly for measuring headphone responses, the pricey dummy heads are an unneeded expense. A big deal, given their usual pricing of thousands to tens of thousands of dollars. You need something to fit the headphone to that should represent a realistic load. The mic should be of generally high quality, linear and low noise as possible, but there aren't too many particular restriction here.

So I didn't wish for it to come to this, but should I get the Beats Studio Wireless for the equivalent of $181 (they normally cost the equivalent of $362 here).
I can't say I know much about headphones and audio and I'm familiar with the meme reputation Beats has, but I did try a pair once and was very impressed.
I usually use headphones at home with either my PC or phone.
I don't even know how to describe what kind of music I like. I think the best way to describe it is just all music except metal or rap, but I listen to more electronic than "real" music (as in real instruments).

My Brainwavz M1's are dying on me. I really liked how they sounded, but at the same time I didn't care for the cable very much. What are some recommended IEM's with a similar sound and price?

Like basically 90% of open headphones? Bass is good on the K702.

How much did you get them for? Really want a pair of intro Lambdas but it seems unrealistic to get them for my small 350USD budget without going through the hassle of proxy buying from Japanese sites.

Is there any way I can get the MDR-7550 or a Sony with a similar build quality for around 100USD? I let a chance pass me up on Shitbay a while ago for a used pair for around 100USD and haven't seen anything even close to that price range since.

I keep fucking up my tech purchases /g/!

Bass is not plentiful, fairly lean, but not as tight as HD800's. It sometimes bleeds into mids. Might be better if I get an amp with more power.
Mids and highs are great, very flat without any weird dips or peaks. Very smooth, and great detail retrieval, especially at its price.
Soundstage is somewhat narrow; imaging is good but it's definitely nowhere near the concert hall presentation of the 800s.

Nabbed it at e-earphone's Akihabara branch for 30k yen. A few microscratches here and there, but still a pretty good price.
The amplifier (SRM-252s) I'm using came as a set (SRS-005mk2) with the low-end mini Stax (SR-003mk2).
Thinking if I should get a 35x series amp, or just hold off 'til I can go straight to SR-009s, but I'm aiming for a Chord Hugo first.

Nice. I should track down a good proxy buyer. Seems like the most affordable solution

your best shot is to just buy MDR EX800ST

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Mdr-ex800st-Headphones-Inner-japan/dp/B0046ESVVG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466006689&sr=8-1&keywords=mdr+ex800st

This is the same as MDR 7550 but it only comes in a plain white box

>>This is the same as MDR 7550 but it only comes in a plain white box
Oh, perfect. Thank you. Why does Sony do this seemingly needless rebranding?
>>
>>55092271
I'd try the 007's before the 009's. The 009's are bright like the lambda's but the 007's have the bass and are more neutral. Plus they're like half the price. In either case, you'll be able to tell the jump in detail and immediately with any omega frame stax.

Also, consider building a DIY stax amp. It's a fun project and even something like the SRX-plus will outperform most of the main stax production amps.

The JDM version is sold by Sony Music/Communications

btw I have the 7550 and MA900.

To my ears the MDR 7550/ex800st is as non-fatiguing as MA900 open headphone in comfort and sound. Both are surprisingly snappy and resolving; and I like that the bass does not bleed to the mids (I think that's what people call "muddying").
7550/ex800st's soundstage is as wide as MA900, but 7550/ex800st handles what I call "separation of multiple note passages" like a pro.

Interesting review. Thanks for the info. I have a habit of buying 'muddy' headphones/IEMs so getting this set should be a welcome change.

Is the seal on them good with the stock eartips or do you recommend any aftermarkets? I was amazed at how much the right top made a difference when I started investing more money and care into my IEM choice. Upgrading from SE215s

stock eartips does a fine job of sealing, but I find the midbass stands out a bit too much for my liking.

I bought Monster SuperTip gels and made midbass sound neutral-ish to my liking. Seal for this is good as long as you wash your ears first.

Welp, atleast everything sounds clearer now. Guess it will take some time to get adjusted.

EQ them
>>
If I have good headphones should I be using DFX with them? Will it ruin their sound quality at the cost of volume?
>>
>>55094184
>DFX
Besides the very limited equalizer (there are so many better things you can use) and spatial effects, it just looks like hogwash.
>Will it ruin their sound quality at the cost of volume?
Loudness? The only ways to manipulate that are with EQ/gain and compression.

>>55092621
SR-009 isn't bright. Just because it isn't Audeze/007 dark doesn't make it a bright set. It's mid-centric way before bright, and that can go for more than a few Lambdas as well.

>Is there any way I can get the MDR-7550 or a Sony with a similar build quality for around 100USD?
Is a particular reason for Sony?
This is from someone who didn't receive them so well during a period of ownership.
>Is the seal on them good with the stock eartips or do you recommend any aftermarkets?
Hybrid tips tend to seal nicely. The unusual earpiece design and memory wire is probably going to be a stumbling block before anything else.
Seal is a pretty trivial condition to get right in the grand scheme of things, the generally much more difficult part is managing the interference and resonant modes the tips have in the higher treble. The 7550/EX800 is less prone to these effects than most sets, lower acoustic output impedance.
