This is a socket 1366 motherboard. It supports 6 core hyper threaded CPUs, up to 24GB RAM, SATA 3 and USB 3, more PCI-E lanes than most modern consumer boards, power button on the mobo, clear cmos on the I/O and post LED On the board as well as 7 fan headers.

This is over 6 years old.

How far have we really come?

Not that far in terms of standards, but better quality im sure and more efficient

you mean via pci right?

not to mention that floppy port. sort your shit out modern manufacturers

We're up against the physical limits, kid. Moore's law is dead.

It gets destroyed by the 6700, so I'd say we're not doing too bad.

That's a high-end board with a $300 MSRP.

Current cheapo consumer boards support 32+ GB RAM, NVMe SSDs, USB 3.1, and why the fuck would you need 7 fan headers when you can have 4 hyperthreaded cores at 3 GHz each at under 50 watts?
>>
>>55040739
They're add on controllers by Marvell and Renesas.
>>
>>55040887
I would dare say not many people have an nvme ssd. 7 fan headers isn't really that much. An 240mm AIO with push pull takes 4, add another 2 fro front intake and 1 on the rear = 7.

>50 watts at 4GHz?
Do you mean per core?

Idk anyone who really gives a fuck about wattage on a desktop except for when it comes to hear output. You may forget it, but plenty of people were getting 4GHz overclocks on i7 920 and 930's.

Those bargain bin boards that support 32GB, lol. They don't support more than 1 16x lane, they also have shit build quality and poor power delivery.

>Do you mean per core?
An i7-6700K is like 75 W under load.

> An 240mm AIO with push pull takes 4
That's the point, you don't need that shit.

Actually X58 supports 48GB of RAM (or maybe even more, haven't tested it yet).

Also my Xeon X5660 is about 20% slower per clock compared to my 5820K.

Not much has happened in terms of CPU power and mobo features in the last 7 years.

Why would you give a AIO cooler 4 headers? At most you need 2, one for the pump and one for all the fans. Each individual fan does not need to be controlled seperately.
>>
I remember LGA1366 boards and it's not just because I'm writing this on a machine with one. For some reason they all had to be high end ones and none of them had a retail price of any less than $200.

However as time goes on, so goes hardware. Boards in the same price range today have PCIe 3.0 (not 2.0), DDR4 (not 3), proper USB 3.1 (not run via regular PCI) and M.2 slots.
>>
Eh, we got better ssds, ddr4 ram, and pcie 4.0 will come out sooner or later.
>>
>>55042999
All of which do absolutely nothing in real world applications.

Running a 980ti on PCIe 1.0 and 3.0 nets about a 5% difference if any at all.

Depending on clock speed and timings DDR4 actually performs worse in a lot of games than DDR3.

SSDs are getting better but again this only concerns professional applications.
For 99% of the population the cheapest SSD offers more than enough.

what I miss the most about the 1.gen platforms (1156/1366) is that you could overclock any cpu on allmost any motherboard regardless of chipset version..

a $50 x5650 hexa core on x58 clocked at around 4.4ghz (you whould need watercooling and a decent mb) is pretty much the same performance as a 5820k on x99, thats impressive for 6 years old hw.

Nice bait
6/10

As an extensive 1366 owner we both know the speed of everything you mentioned is much faster now
