Is the i3 6100 the true king of budget processors right now? Seconded by an a8 or a10 APU?

Yes. Thanks for making this insightful and top quality thread you dumb tripfaggot.

i've been thinking of picking up an a10-7890k

i3 6300 is the king of budget processors. 3.8ghz and the ability to use DDR4 memeory.

The 845 wins out at about $50 less

and ya the i5 6400 is a pile of shit

Isn't it 3.9ghz?

Lol this pathetic excuse for your shit advice.

Stop recommending AM3+ kid because it's over.

Until AM4 is out, Intel is the way to go. Unless you have a very specific use case where the 8350 shines.

If you buy an AMD APU and later on get a AMD GPU DX12 and Vulkan will use all stream processors on both APU and GPU. APU with 500 stream processors + GPU 2000 stream processors = 2500 stream processors
>>
>>55032796
Intel locked that feature on non K chips, aside from the G3258 I guess
>>
>>55032796
>Not realising that with with higher single core speed, you get better performance in most applications.
>Not realising that with hyperthreading the card is essentially a quad core

We're talking about budget processors here. If the guy had the money he'd buy a 6700k.
>>
>>55032800
not really. sometimes it's smarter to get the most bang for you buck on a dead-end platform and then rebuilt later with a newer platform.

at the budget level, you pay a premium for upgradability. if you know that you won't be on a budget in 2 years, then there's no reason to pay that premium. just squeeze as much power into it now and then rebuild from scratch later.
>>
>>55032736
yeah, e5 first revisions are fucking monsters. but the motherboards are insanely expensive, lga2011v1. they go for about $200 minimum on ebay, and it goes without saying there is no ddr4 support, etc. also it's a >140W chip. i own one with 2 e5 2670s and the total system draw is 800W with a single 7970ghz edition and a few hard drives and an ssd. overall the value is depreciated by the fact that finding compatible cases and mobos are really expensive (a lot are eatx).
>>
>>55032874

I knew the motherboards were a bit pricey, I think it's offset nicely by the cheap price of the chip though. The problem is the power draw, goddamn 800w is insane.
>>
>>55032763
Then that begs the question why pay $10-15 extra for .1ghz?
>>
>>55032874
Could you not have just bought a used workstation and cannibalised the parts you needed? Used work stations tend to go for next to nothing much like think pads.
>>
>>55032907
Because 10-15 won't break the bank but will worth it a few years down the line because of how Skylake processors scale with DDR4 ram.
>>
>>55032832
There are some Skylake motherboards that allow overclock of NON-K CPU. Look up google to find out which motherboards supports those. You might need to update those motherboards, but yeah.

>>55032849
As per above, maybe a locked i5 + one of those motherboards that support overclock can help. Its sad that Intel is intentionally holding the CPU market growth down simply because AMD can't compete

>>55032915
*Only in certain games, and only when you hit a CPU bottleneck with high end GPUs

in any case it really won't be worth it over the 6100
>>
>>55032964
Honestly, I'd pay the extra for the 100mhz and 1mb of extra cache.
>>
>>55032689
most likely not going to happen. even if they do someone will come up with a workaround. lol fag try harder
>>
>>55032964
Intel forced mobo makers to update their bios versions. But you can still upgrade your own bios manually.

Verification from the forum is needed.
>>
>>55032796
It's 4 threads anon. And it's better than the quad core 6400.
>>
>>55033065
Doesn't flashing your bios still carry the risk of bricking your board on rare occasions? That's not a risk you'd want to take if you have a low budget

why can't AM4 hurry the fuck up already.
>>
>>55033065
ya exactly. the bios revisions with the nonk OC feature r still around.
>>
>>55033097
Flashing always carries the risk of "bricking." In your case, simply RMA the mobo since it would be new.
>>
>>55032964
No they fucking didn't I have a Z series motherboard and a non-k cpu and overclocked it to 4ghz
>>
>>55033225
Well then you aren't using updated BIOs
>>
>>55033247
Upgrading/Downgrading is same process. Some mobo needs update to get non-K overclock working, others don't. Some newer mobo needs downclock, others don't.

Not always the case since stores might still have older stock that haven't been manufacturer bios upgraded.
>>
>>55033293
in any case it's still a pain in the ass
>>
>>55032910
kind of. for some of the older xeon systems it's readily feasible because the boards aren't exclusively high end or they can be modded (i'm referring to the lga775 mod), but for my e5 2670 in particular and probably every single newer processor, the boards are so expensive it's incredibly hard (but possible) to find one cheap. even right now, a used workstation with a lga2011 board (let alone a dual socket one) like the dell precision t7600 goes for at least 800 dollars.

>>55032902
yeah, i still own the system but i don't really use it that much aside from remote access, it's shoved in the back of the office as a novelty device as i don't like the guzzle that electricity from home.
>>
>>55033316
no it's not, if your on a the newer bios it's so simple just enable turbo boost and vuala, that's all I had to do to go from 3.4ghz to 4.0ghz
>>
>>55033316
All they really did is locked the multiplier at 40x you can still fuck around with the vcore voltage and cache multiplier and pretty much everything else
>>
I currently own an A10-7850k and I find it's really good for its cost, pair it with a built in wifi motherboard, you're set!
>>
My local microcenter has the a10-7890k with wraith cooler for $130. With a good a88x chipset motherboard and their combo bundle deal, you could spend less than $200 and get decent graphics, a decent cpu, etc etc for cheap. I helped a guy build an entire pc for $390. AMD APUs make for perfect CS:GO, DOTA2, and LoL machines hands down.
>>
>>55033434
how does it handle for simple tasks, like web browsing?
>>
also I bumped up the bclk from 800mhz to 1ghz which seemed to be the deciding factor
>>
>>55033497
I don't notice any difference than my i5-4440 build
both off of wireless connections
>>

dads rite?
>>
>>55033582
yup. i bought him an ipad last year and he fell in love with it. his ipad is probably faster than his computer so the ipad is like the coolest thing in the world to him.
>>
>>55033434
Would you say something like an a8 7600/7650k would be enough for steam games like csgo and planetary annihilation?
>>
>>55033602
Yeah 100% for CS:go but im not sure about planetary annihilation, probably lower settings?
APUs are pretty reliable in games too, smooth as the chip can handle!
>>55033598
I bought him a laptop a few years ago and he used it for checking emails and rarely facebook, but since I got him this phone he is taking pictures and is on facebook pretty much most of the time.
>>
>>55033637
Sweet. Thanks m8.

Would you recommend the 7650k or 7800? They're both same price here.

Or 7600 will be enough? I don't mind lowering settings as long as it's 40fps 1080p.

cinebench r15 single core: 190
cinebench r15 multicore: 742

Pushing the BCLK past 163 causes a freezup after an hour or two of heavy gaming. I think that's due to the 2400mhz ram speed. very stable at 4.4ghz
>>
>>55033707
7650k for sure, its on par with the 7850k for being an A8 chip than a A10

Or better yet, wait for AM4 and buy an AM4 APU system

if you're buying a hard drive, you should never go below a terabyte. 15 dollars for 80gb of hard drive is a horrid horrid ratio.

You don't NEED to buy a GPU with it. It plays lol, wow and all the other shit most casuals play perfectly fine on the built-in graphics.
