Just closing the browser and starting it again works but that's being a hassle. Anyone know what's wrong with my browser?

It's been two years that I have my computer and I didn't had this issue before.

Whenever I start my computer it take a lot of time to show me the bios screen (it can take a few minutes to one hour)
Once the bios screen appears, it boot normally.

I tried to unplug most devices of the computer, it still is slow to show me the bios screen.

What can be the issue ? Once it boots, everything works and run normally

I posted this the other day and while I got some help I couldn't fix it. Now I'm by my computer so it might be easier. I'm a total noob tho so pls no bully

I bought a slightly used 980 ti and a 1440p 144hz monitor but everything caps at 60 frames per second. The nvidia control panel won't let me change it to 144hz. I'm using a new hdmi cable and for some reason displayport isn't working with my 980ti.
Any suggestions?

>>55029334
hdmi can't do 1440p at 144hz, 60 is the maximum.

Try DVI?

Is the monitor connected to the card and not the motherboard?

the amount of frames you can render doesn't mean they can be displayed on the monitor.
if the monitor refreshes at 60hz and you get 1000 frames per second means you can see 60 of these 1000 frames per second.
Make sure your monitor and cable support HDMI2.0, otherwise it can't go above 60hz.
Use displayport instead.

I got a GPS module that has a USB connection. It created a virtual COM port on the computer. Inside the module there are the usual COM connections, Vcc Rx Tx and all that. I connected them to a USB-serial adapter but there's no data going over them and these connections went straight to the USB cable, so were these Rx and Tx points really just USB data + and - points?

Uninstall or disable each of your extensions and see if it still breaks. If it doesnt work still, try installing a clean version of chrome. If that works, add your extensions again, checking if it breaks chrome or not.
>>
>>55029394
the unreal engine has blueprints where you don't have to write a single line of code and just connect lines with each other.
https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/INT/Engine/Blueprints/

you can make games with that, but if you want to make anything more complex blueprints will not suffice.

I'm about to actually sort out all the IPs in my home network and just need to know some basic things.

What I'm planning to do is set the DHCP range from 192.168.0.11 and up. Then I'll assign a few static IPs like computers and server between 192.168.0.3-10,. 1 and 2 being reserved for router and wifi extender upstairs.

Does this sound about right?

Actually I draw, and make music, so I tought I could avoid learning code/programming and start making games (more likely to be 2D but who knows, Unity does 3D too, so...).
To answer the first question, I'll probably keep it relatively simple (like platformers for a certain time)

>but if you want to make anything more complex What do you see as complex?
Actually all I need is to be able to create games that will have their own look and not look like they all come out from the same mold.
Not sure how Unity does that. Any good "pro" Unity games examples by the way?

Here's the deal:

I'm running Kodi on my Windows desktop in my bedroom. Works great.

I also spend a lot of time in the garage working on stuff, often times loud stuff. I usually listen to podcasts on my Android phone. This way I can wear ear muffs for loud work and still hear just fine.

Here's what I'd like to be able to do: play videos on my laptop in the garage, while 'casting' the sound via my Android phone. Ideally, it would pick up wherever I left off in Kodi on my desktop.

So... Maybe 'cast' the video to the laptop, and 'cast' the audio separately to the Android? Play the videos directly on the laptop and 'cast' the sound to the Android?

Any suggestions?
>>
>>55029498
sure, but are you going to have 243 devices connected that your DHCP range need to be this large?
I'd probably make it 10-20 depending if your family uses it too or only you and keep the rest unused.

I want to stream old console games on twitch and stuff.
I want 720p 60FPS

I am going to build the lowest budget PC I can.

From what I am reading, streaming performance has everything to do with how strong your CPU is.

on craigslist the only thing I can get an i3-3240 for 60$
motherboard for another 20$
Not sure how good it is though.

Is this going to be too weak to process the stream?
I tried my old LGA775 quad core running 720p@60FPS. It can only put out about 10-12 FPS.

What other cheap, bang for buck CPU for power is there?

At ~$100, the R7 370 would be a substantial improvement. Just be aware it's a twice-rebranded 7850. You can pick up used 7850's and 7870's in the $80 range.
If you have a craptacular OEM PSU and don't want to swap it out, a 750Ti is what you'd want. It could handle Fallout 4 on Medium.

1. Do I have to overclock to play games in 4k?

2. What is the deal with processors, why can't the bigger the 'k' mean the better processor. I think I watched a video where they said a i5 5900k something rather is better than a i7 6700k.

3. I also read that the processors cores and threads make a difference with the 'better' processor. So can I just go off that instead of the ####k?

4. Cases. I've seen mid and full towers. Are full cases just used for airflow, space, and looks?

5. Is there any difference when it comes to the 1080 brands, e.g. msi, gigabyte, asus?

6. What companies make the most reputable components to the computer, e.g. cpu, gpu, ram, ssd, case, power supply, monitor, cooling?

7. I've seen different ssd's everywhere. Majority have a read and write speed of 550mb. Is this the only spec I should look at for gaming?

8. The kingston ssd has a read/write spec of 1400mb, where as Samsung, and Intel have ssd's with 550mb. What is the better ssd?

9. I have an i7 4770k, should I upgrade it to a 6700 or 6700k or is mine fine to play games like the Witcher?

10. How do viruses slow your internet speed?

11. What is the best way to clean a computer, including dusty fans?

12. Should I go to a computer store for speakers?

13. What are the best speakers that don't include surround-sound?

14. The sabertooth z170 motherboard has its own sound chip. Is there a benefit to putting in a separate $60 sound card?

15. If gaming is headed for Windows 10, should I swap to Linux, Mac, or stay with 07?

16. Do I really need a cpu cooler? Can't I just install 6 140mm fans on my case and call it a day?

17. Can overclocking really set your computer on fire?

18. Watercooling, how does it work.? Do you put water in it every day?
Say you've just set it up, and you're giving it a test run. It leaks and spills onto your gpu, ssd, and power supply. How fucked are you?

Hello /g/

I'm having a strange issue where Firefox hesitates for ~3 seconds when loading a webpage (it says firefox is "looking up" the page during this time). The only time this does not happen is if I load a page less than X seconds after previously loading that page, where X varies by website, e.g. around 10 seconds for startpage, and a couple minutes for all other pages. It doesn't seem to matter what extensions I have enabled. It also only happens on this computer, which should rule out the router/network.

Any ideas as to what's going on? I'd appreciate any help.
>>
>>55030323
1. your CPU? no, your GPU? Maybe, depends which and how much power it got.

2. 3. https://www-ssl.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/processor-numbers.html

4. yes, more space, better cable management, other fancy extras

5. the reference cards no, the non reference cards come with custom PCBs and coolers, which may allow higher overclocks depending on manufacturer.

6. look at logicalincrements.com

7. might want to look at size too, since games take up quite a lot of space nowadays.

8. look at the specs. if it writes/reads with 1400MB/s you can be sure it'll cost at least double of an SSD that reads/writes 500MB/s

9. It's fine, games aren't CPU heavy. Your i7 is already overkill for probably all of them.

How do I get all the function buttons on my keyboard to work? The sound keys seem to work if I hold down Fn, but I haven't found a way to get the music keys (prev, next, play, pause) to work. Is there some program I should be using?

Keyboard is Rosewill RK-9000V2. OS is Windows 10.
>>
>>55030564
did the keyboard come with drivers? for specific special function keys I believe you need more than just a generic keyboard driver
>>
>>55030564
depends on the music player.
if they don't listen to those keys nothing will happen.
>>
>>55030584
keyboard did not come with drivers
>>
>>55030606
you might check the rosewill site and see if drivers are available for that specific keyboard, alternately lot's of music players these days give you the option to bind keys
>>
>>55030564
Try with foobar2k or mpc-hc. If those don't work, see if the keyboard is sending something non-standard when they're pressed. And maybe set up AutoHotKey to have them just werk universally.

19. Instead of having someone build me a custom pc, should I just buy a general $3000 gaming computer that twitch streamers advertise?

20. Do ssd's make a difference when looking at porn?

21. My current pc sometimes freezes for 5 seconds, but my audio is fine. What could be the problem?

22. DirectX, how can I benefit from it?
I remember installing it, but do I have to run it, or does it just do its thing in the background?

23. Where can I save money when building a pc, everyone says don't bitch out on the power, so what doesn't matter?

24. When looking at power supply, there is a corsair 750w gold for $200, but then a corsair 750w plat for $220. Which one is worth more?

25. I am making a huge jump in gpu's. My current is a geforce 430 GT (2013). Should I wait for the amd 480, nvidia 1080, 1070, 1060, or something less OP?

26. I seen people talk about ram, saying how all games max out at 2400-2600ghz. But there's the corsair vengeance 3200ghz going for the same price as every other 2600ghz ram. Is there something I'm missing?

27. Speaking of ram, is it better to have x4 sticks, or x2 sticks of ram?
Like does it reduce heat, run better, look sexier?

28. Are there any Do's and DONT's to overclocking?

I'll probably come back later today with more. Thank you.

19. they are generally more expensive and have less good hardware. You don't need 3000$ for a really good computer.

20. no

21. could be a lot of things, do you have an SSD? is the GPU okay? is the CPU at 100% when it does hang?

22. It's the runtime that most games are written in. A program can talk to the GPU through it, it does not run in the background. There are a lot of versions and programs written in a specific version need that specific runtime, that's why every game keeps installing it.

23. You don't need "gamer" branded motherboards or anything special. check parts in details on what you want and don't let flashy LEDs fool you.

24. check the differences, does one have modular cables? I personally run a bronze modular 650W PSU, which is enough for a 980ti and an overclocked 3570k.

25. The 480 seems to be a good midrange GPU, the 1080 and 1070 are more highend. Figure out what you want to do, you don't need a 1080 on a 1080p screen. Something cheaper will suffice.

26. RAM speed only matters for benchmarking, you can't feel any difference.

27. Both are fine, with 2x sticks you can upgrade later and add 2 more, where as with 4 smaller ones you'd have to replace 2 of them.

28. go in small steps, don't increase voltage/clock too fast. Test for stability after every increment. Also grab a notepad and write down the settings you used. You might need to reset the bios and start from beginning again.

4 sticks would be 2 sets of dual channel. So get 2 big sticks, and leave the 2 extra slots for expansion later

They seem to have some kind of partnership with overclockers UK and noctua, so obviously they're not completely trash.. Right?

I can't see why overclockers would put it as a non-changeable PSU in a PC build if it was destined to fail, they give 3 year warranty and 2 year on PSU alone..

It doesn't works everywhere, and it also messes up with other function keys. For example, it all started when I played gta 4 with the native trainer. I pressed the f12, and ctrl+1 and 2 was supposed to do something in the game but now it does something else, like ctrl or shift has been changed.

Here's what I do, since I have a primary SSD and a secondary HDD:

1) Move C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common to D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common

2) Run CMD as administrator

3) Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps

4) type

If you have particular games that you want to run faster, move them back to the C: drive and make individual junction points back to them.

Hard links is a horrible idea.
Dont do this
Install steam, set where you want your library to be.Exit steam, put your games/saves etc in this new folder.
Start up steam,it will do a library scan, and verify everything is there. Some games you will need to "reinstall" them, but it is just going to verify your new library
Done without fucking up your system

I want to stream high quality media over a somewhat slow and unreliable internet connection. I have full control over the sender and receiver setups.

I'm currently using rsync to copy the file, and playing it with mpv while it downloads. This works but I know there's overhead in the form of the SSH tunnel. Which protocol should I use instead?

* Low overhead is important
* Does need to be TCP since Matroska isn't built for unreliable streams
* Needs to be able to resume broken downloads and do checksums on both sides block-by-block and sync the different/missing parts if needed. rsync does this well
* Security is not needed or wanted

Basically rsync without encryption. Does this exist?

Where is a good place to download unadulterated Windows isos? I don't trust the torrents that come preactivated or packed with extra software, is there a repository of sorts where I can get the exact isos of the disks Windows distributed?

There is no magic program all in one for this

You want a htpc, look at kodi.
UPNP/port foreward it and its accesable from the outside
>checksum etc
You could an inotify tracker that can monitor your directory for changes out side of the htpc setup.

I enabled IPv6 on my Ubuntu web server.

Now I can't update for shit. Why did IPv6 do this? I looked through pages of people having the same problem on the DigitalOcean forums. No solid answer. One guy even forced everything to use IPv4, but what's the point of enabling IPv6 then???

It mostly works, actually. But it's marginal and I therefore am looking for ways to improve the margin.

I think you slightly got the wrong idea about my setup. I may have been misleading when I said "stream".

1) Start torrent of a reasonably high quality video (2-4GiB/hour) on my remote server. This takes a couple minutes, can be ignored.
2) Start an rsync of that file over the internet to my local machine.
3) After a few minutes, open the incomplete file with mpv.

Generally, the rsync can keep up, but only just. I can compare the remaining length of the video with the rsync estimate to get an idea of whether it's likely to run out of buffer. I'd like to improve my chances of watching without interruptions by using a lower-overhead protocol if possible.

HTPCs, streaming frontends, port forwarding, etc etc are all out of scope for this.

I've got a server tower (handed down to me) I'd like to sell on Craigslist. I don't know much about servers and OS licensing for servers.

Is it cool to sell it with Windows Server 2016 "Technical Preview 5"? I downloaded the ISO from Microsoft's website, but I don't know if the ISO is "linked" to the MS Live account I used to download it with. Or does that shit just not really matter?

I'd figure I'll just throw it on a spare 120GB SSD I have lying around, install it in the server, and let the buyer decide what to do from there.

I want to do a SFF productivity/gaming build, but my huge limiting factor is storage.

I'm looking into NAS and DAS storage, but ideally, I'm looking for something that has little to no difference in performance over having storage installed directly/internally.

Any suggestions?

>streaming performance has everything to do with how strong your CPU is.
that's true
you don't need a supercomputer to encode 720p video at 60fps
HOWEVER
there is a speed/quality tradeoff, and you have your internet upload bandwidth to consider
the faster the encoding settings, the lower the quality will be at a given bitrate
so you can compensate for low upload speed by using a faster cpu to make a more efficient encode
or you can compensate for a slow cpu by making a low efficiency encode that uses lots of upload bandwidth

Preferably no more than $200, or otherwise it's not worth transitioning from what I have right now, so ideally it's the amount for an enclosure.

I'm not opposed to building a NAS, especially considering I have more than enough parts, but I don't want to go through the trouble of setting it up again, like when I tried FreeNAS.

It's an EVGA G2 750w supernova, when I bought it had probably the best reviews of any PSU so I'm not sure that's the problem

What's a good place to get a laptop built to spec, or at least a manufacturer/website that offers customization options? I'm trying to get a laptop for my dad for Father's Day, budget is around $1000. I'd like something with discrete graphics and at least an i5. He does light gaming and isn't portable with it - it's basically a desktop, we just don't have room for a tower setup or even an all-in-one.

Any recommendations, /g/? I've already looked at Lenovo and nothing there really excites me, and apparently Asus doesn't offer customization options. Who else is reliable?
