If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

It's really not worth trying to replace a desktop if you're trying to roll like that, especially if you need some graphics power and don't want to spend in which case it *will* end in tears. The mobile processors save for something rapey like the ones in the new P series will always be substantially less capable unless your desktop is *really* old

>>55025902
So I just bought my first thinkpad (t61) and I have a bunch of noob questions. I know this is 4chan so I'll take things with a grain of salt, but any advice would be appreciated.

I would like to upgrade the RAM to 8GB, it's currently 4GB. Where can I get this much RAM? I've only been able to find RAM this size for old macs, and I'm not sure if the RAM itself is different but don't want to shell out unless I know what I'm getting into.

According to the guide and the paperwork, I have a T9300 CPU. Will this be able to handle a 64 bit OS or should I go with 32?

All in all I'm really happy with it, I tried Ubuntu from the CD and I'm getting performance comparable to my 2013 Macbook Pro, at around 25x cheaper. I'll have to see how things go.
>>

>According to the guide and the paperwork, I have a T9300 CPU. Will this be able to handle a 64 bit OS or should I go with 32?
All CPUs available for the T61 are 64-bit. T9300 handles Windows 7 without a hitch, never mind less bloated Linux distros.
>>
>>55028008
>core 2 duo era laptop

Sorry buddy, 32bit is 32bit. 3.9 GB of ram max will be read, and I don't think that CPU will handle a 64bit OS nicely. Go with 32bit.
>>
>>55028008
You should have bought a T400.

DDR2 RAM is expensive.
Also your limit is 4GB RAM, you cant add more.

Thinking about getting a Thinkpad T460p with 72whr battery. Anyone else have it?

Also, does anyone know if I could set it up with an EGPU? It has a M.2-2242 slot in it, not Pci-e unfortunately...
>>
>>55028719
T460p is housefire-tier, wouldn't recommend. Get a P50 if you want a powerful new Thinkpad, IIRC it also has Thunderbolt 3 so it would support eGPUs using that connector.
>>
>>55028739
>Get a P50

I would but it seems pretty damn big for moving day to day on a college campus. Plus I don't need a full blown workstation, is the t460p really that bad at cooling?

>also thunderbolt 3 is pretty damn expensive relative to other egpu solutions.

Literally an adaptor was on sale for like 30 or 40 quid and my desktop works fine as it is, it's just a fun hobby / for travel possibly.

>>55029537
Ive posted here a couple times in the last few months but basically no forum has the same issues I have.
X220, 8GB ram so it's not the 16GB glitch, using 750W PSU so it's not low power, 660Ti with PE4C 3.0 so it's not the gen 1 vs gen 2 PCIe issue, everything just werked and auto installed itself.

Problem is it randomly crashes into BSOD with no identifiable error messages. Seems to happen anywhere between 5 minutes to 5 hours after boot, and seems to be more likely to happen if I'm playing newer more graphically intense games / if the computer is hotter.
To be more precise, the screen goes black first, sometimes I have a 'nvidia driver stopped responding' message if it fixes itself, and the sound loops 1 second of sound, similar to how source games loop sound when they crash.
I found a single other person complaining about BSOD on his PE4C 3.0, but no fix

But I'm lazy anyway - I could try it on my X201 thinkpad, I haven't tried a fresh windows 7 install even though my version is rather modified and that could be the issue.

Once it works I wanna DIY my own box for it all so I can shove it in a bag and take it with me.

The best part about eGPU so far thou is that it can indeed output at 144hz on high refresh rate monitors.

>>
>>55027297
Late as fuck reply. The reason I'm doing this is because I don't need the graphics anymore. It seems that the second gen mobile quads and even more so the third gen ones are very comparable performance wise. I just generally have a heavy desktop workload. Shit loads of tabs, 1080p flash/html5 video going, a vm, etc. This first gen i3 that I'm on now is struggling with no streams or vms open.

I'm thinking maybe just a high spec t430s and if I need more after that I'll throw together a desktop with a used xeon or sandy or something. Maybe zen
>>
>>55026716
>I know I can put one in a t520 but they struggle with it.
This is untrue, T520 cooling should be more than capable of handling a quad core, it was designed to.
>>
>>55030869
I think you may be right. I see a thread with someone struggling with overheating but it seems to be isolated. There is also a post stating that depending on the psu that you have you may run into issues when doing cpu intensive shit.

Leaning towards buying the 2520m t520 and throwing in a i7-2960XM or another sandy quad down the road.

Why is my W500 throttling my performance on battery? this is bullshit.

this fucking game even has a fucking fps counter option, so i can watch it go from a semi-usable 15fps to a bullshit 6-9 by plugging or unpligging my laptop.

i have tried everything i could to fix this. i even googled "prevent laptop throttling", used a sketchy-looking .reg file from the site, and granted 100% access or smth to "core parking min cores" and this throttling is still fuckin happening on battery.

please help me. it's cockblocking me something fierce. In lenovo power manager my plan is "maximum performance" with everything set exactly the same for "Battery settings" and "AC settings"

SERIOUS QUESTION ALERT:

You really fucked up by not considering that before purchasing. Some people don't give a shit about resolution but I don't understand it. The two most important parts of the laptop, to me, are the trackpad and the display. You're not going to be happy if either of those parts are not up to your personal standards.

Even FHD feels antiquated after seeing the Surface Book and core m MacBook in person. They look like 12 inch phone screens, which is what it SHOULD be.
>>
>>55035289
>Lenovo has a habit of choosing the worst ones in some models
Specifically, in the models that aren't geared towards workstation use and graphical design, and models that share TN panels with these.
In other words if you want a good TN panel in a Thinkpad, you need a 15.6" model.
>>
>>55035496

I wish I could of checked out the resolution before hand but I couldn't. Even if I did, I still would of bought it. You literally cant beat the price to performance ratio and Im only going to use it for school work and browsing with some sporadic movie watching; which it's not really good at.

It's tolerable in small doses. It's almost always more comfortable to be at a desk then bed or the couch so outside of while in the library between classes or on the weekends I'm not even using the display. It doesn't have any of those, but it does have NGFF input for the wireless card.

And according to this video (see part3 video where it works), you can actually run this thing successfully off an NGFF port.

In that case you're not going to find an X220 without at the very least that little rectangle the webcam sits in. Or any Thinkpad at all, for that matter.
Even the very few you might find without a webcam will have the cutout/recessed part in place for it because the Thinklight resides there as well.

>>
>>55034581
First get isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs. Use them to clean the CPU die and the heatsink.
Sandy and Ivy Bridge cores are rectangular, so putting a line of paste across the die(without reaching the edges) or spreading the paste will work the same.

>inb4 spreading leaves bubbles.
I did some tests with those 2 methods and the resulting temps were THE SAME(78C while running IntelBurnTest and 96C with IBT and FurMark with the iGPU). The only thing that can make the temperatures go higher or lower is the amount you apply. You may need to try several times with different amounts if it's your first repaste until you get acceptable results.

Well for starters, I wanted a Thinkpad for the amazing keyboard (I know, liking the post x20 keyboard, heresy and all). I specifically want the T460p because I like having the horsepower of a quad-core processor in a 14 inch frame under 5 pounds. I know the lid is made of mediocre plastic and yes the processor can get hot, but I like the design overall, even with the funky 72whr battery sticking out the back.

>It's cool
>>
>>55035958
>without reaching the edges
Actually, for optimal results you'll want to use a non-conductive paste and have it spread to just over the edges of the die. For a die without a headspreader, it's best to make sure you cover the whole thing, including the corners.
>>
What's up guys? Just got a T410, but am having an issue with the memory. I'm thinking that my Thinkpad isn't able to handle the 12800 RAM that I installed, so I was wondering... Is there a way to downclock the RAM to be 8500 compatible? Thanks in advance.
>>
>>55036156
The machine should downclock on it's own if there's an incompatibility, something has gotta be up with the ram if you're running into issues.
>>
>>55036197
Do you think it could be a voltage mismatch issue?
>>
>>55036234
DDR3 voltage is pretty standard, unless you've put low voltage DDR3L ram in it. Try running it with each a single stick of ram from each of your sticks, maybe one is messed up.
>>
>>55036273
Yeah, just put the previous stick in and had no issues with booting... Must be a faulty stick.
>>
>>55036133
My concern about applying paste from edge to edge is the amount of paste that could be spilling of the die.
When I was finding the correct amount of paste I noticed that, and leaving a small margin between the paste and the edges avoided spilling while keeping a maximum coverage. I'm talking about 2-2.5mm
>>
>>55036304
Good shit. Thinkpad, knew there couldn't be anything wrong with it.
>>
>>55036329
It is perfectly fine for non-conductive paste to spill off the die, as long as it doesn't spill all the way off the CPU's PCB onto the motherboard.
In fact, that's the optimal way to do it. You want 100% coverage on the die, not 95%. Just don't use a conductive paste.

I understood DDR3L DIMMs can return to 1.5V mode if the board does not support 1.35V memory or if there's a mismatch between two modules. After all, running RAM at 1.35V demands better quality chips than 1.5V.
