Hey /g/, so im looking to get a new mic for general usage/vocal recording, to setup for my PC. Now, I understand that with condenser mics you need an audio interface with Phantom Power, just to power the mic itself. My question is, how would I go about getting sound into my computer if im not using a USB mic (I dont want a USB because I plan on gettign more in the future and dont want to be limited to buying an entire new set instead of just getting another XLR mic.) Anyone have any kind of know-how when it comes to this that would be willing to explain it in its entirety to me? Thanks ahead in advance.
PS. Sorry for horrible english, Swedish native.

every computer i've plugged a electret condenser mic into had the phantom power on the mic jack.
one way to check is rip the mic out of an old phone nad connect it to a old headphone plug

I am unsure how to do this, I just wanted to know how an audio interface, which is powering the mic among oter settings (grain, volume, etc) to feed the sound into my computer.

i was just looking at this one OP

shits pretty fucking good and it's usb. don't need all that extra audio interface to get the good quality.

Yes, I saw this one when looking over the audio setup iDubbbz (fuck me, right?) uses and was interested.

The XLR connector has 3 pins, one of which supplies phantom power. The standard is 48 volts, but some compact or old devices supply less, some more expensive microphones can operate from 11 volts. I recommend grabbing a cheap Behringer USB interface with a MIDAS preamp, like the UMC202HD (192kHz is a nice thing to have) and an AT2020, or if you have a little bit of extra cash, the AT2035, which is worth every extra penny as it has a much lower noise floor. Don't forget to grab a high quality cable, I am using a Klotz cable with Neutrik connectors and the results are great.

this one isn't the exact one idubbbz uses. and actually that was what also brought me to this one. he uses the c03, the c03u looks to be a slightly cheaper version, but from what i have heard, there's no real audio quality difference.
>>
>>55020900
I really appreciate extensive comments like this. I had already planned on getting the AT2035, the problem arose when looke at interfaces and realizing I have no Idea how to hook it up to my PC. Thank you.
>>
>>55020902
So you believe I should not get an XLR mic and instead go with USB?
>>
>>55020964
i mean it really all depends on what you want. if i were going to choose, i would go with simplicity over a slightly more complicated audio setup. i'd be completely satisfied with the quality that mic puts out, and the funds i would otherwise spend on xlr cables and proper audio interfaces can go straight into a proper boom stand and pop filter for it as well. with the c03u the price shouldn't go over 130 for everything included, where as if you went and got an at2035, you're shooting way over that price.

but alas, compare and contrast and find out what you truly want to do. i'm gonna be pulling the trigger on that c03u soon myself. maybe i'll be super cool like one of them youtube celebs one day
>>
>>55020992
Hahaha good luck, I support that, one day. Ive got everything im my shopping cart ready to be ordered except for the interface and then I was getting skeptical about the mic itself (USB, or XLR)
>>
>>55021028
can't go wrong either way, just gotta know what you're doing a slight bit more with xlr. might be worth it for the knowledge down the line. if you ever end up upgrading you'll already have a decent audio interface to work with already. as a poor fag i'd be more concerned about funds, but i don't sense that is a problem for you.

Im thinking:
AT2035 or the C03.
Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface
with any other accessory (Stand and arm,pop filter)
Does that sound like an okay setup or?
>>
>>55021130
Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface is the way to go if you're going for that 2035. completely useless if you're going c03. but yeah, sounds perfectly fine to me.
>>
>>55021130
Why 2i2 instead of solo 2nd gen? Are you using more than one xlr device?
>>
>>55021164
I would like the option for at least one more mic to be added in order for a friend to record with me sometime.
>>
Get a chink BM-800 mic and a cheap shitty external sound card that can power the mic without the need for phantom power.
>>
>>55021207
thank you for your comment, however, I think ill go with something a little more worth it than something "Cheap and Shitty"
>>
>>55021179
The 2i2 is somewhat dated, iirc the older version used to have quality control problems, and the current version only has a 96KHz sample rate. The Solo is better overall, the new generation has a sampling rate of 192KHz. The Behringer interface mentioned earlier is 192KHz and has two inputs. Most big musical equipment companies use outdated designs and charge you something similar to audiophile tax, so it's worth shopping around.
>>
>>55020647

just get a scarlett 2i2 and be done with it can be had for about 100USD, sorry for not knowing what that is in SEK

it's usb, you can plug in mics, headphones and instruments as well as output to big boy speakers - it's entry level pro audio which is a very competitive market so you'll actually get your money's worth versus audiophile shit where they extort the piss out of you because "muh refined sonic palette"
>>
>>55021256
also works on windoze, mac os and linux
>>
>>55021275
>>55021238
Ive decided to just go ahead and get the scarlett 2i2, but im also going to get another interface just to compare the two, any ideas?
>>
>>55021275
Running Windows 7 Ultimate, Im not very fond of 8 or 10.
>>
>>55021305
Any modern USB interface should work on any OS anyways because they are class compliant. The only people stupid enough to not make their devices class compliant are M-Audio.
>>
>>55021130
Why not just grab an normal SM58 mic and the usb adapter for it.
>>
>>55021322
those are the mics my instructor (used to be) uses, ive played around with them and I dont think they will be, uh, adequate??? for what I plan on using them for, in my opinion those are beginner stage mics, which is how we used them
>>
Blue yeti if you want a shit one.
If you are serious and want a good one. AT2020 mic is a good place to start.
>>
>>55021354
Sure, in the same sense that xlr's are the "beginner" cable type to use with microphones.

Sitting comfy with a audio technica AT2020 and Focusrite solo interface. I just need a better mic stand :/

At2020 here too with a Behringer XENYX Q802 and boom type mic arm

I wish I could do a boom mic arm, but it'd be sitting in the middle of my room, and these desk clamp ones break down on me eventually.

Like my mic droops downward like a limp dick due to loose stripped out screws.
>>
>>55021479
yeah, although Im not sure if a more pricey one would have slightly stronger springs. I went for a cheap arm but I overtightened the screws and nutlocked some. Works a treat.
