I used to tinker with GNU/Linux in my free time, now that I've graduated and been in the industry 4 years I've lost the enthusiasm but I think only because humans weren't meant to push relentlessly through something for 10 hours a day.

Maybe I just need to switch to a job that is related but different enough to feel exciting again.

I honestly like the codemonkeying itself, but shit if the users don't suck the life out of me. The worst is the non-managers who don't know their own product and are too limpdicked to ever say no to any of the assbackwards requests out of their user base. Trying to cut and run doesn't work since this dysfunction is so common.

Pajeet has a CCIE and is willing to work for close to minimum wage

Networking is probably the most Pajeet infested area of IT next to Java/C# dev.
>>
>>55019209
This is one big reason why I want to get out of IT and move into a business position. Pajeets are just infesting so many companies.

Business on the other hand doesn't want Pajeet anywhere near their departments. Infrastructure on the other hand treats all of their employees as commodities.

>>
>>55019330
At my company there are barely any Pajeets on the business side. Someone who knows how the business operates and has knowledge of how things actually work is a lot more valuable than a UNIX admin. Managers can easily find new UNIX admins. However, someone with intimate business knowledge is a lot harder to replace.

>>55019233
That was my logic for going MIS. Can't compete with the Pajeet otherwise

I wouldn't be if big corporations stopped making all those shit decisions, using shit products and setting up shit infrastructures and production lines.

One project I'm working on has been in the making for FIVE FUCKING YEARS and it's still not finished. All it is is a website with a little bit of business logic and 2 databases on the backend. It's still nowhere near finished.

It's taking this long and has so many goddamn bugs and usability issues because someone thought it would be a good idea to build the website using java (jsf). If they had just gone with writing html and putting a simple js framework on it like angular or even just using php, it would've been done in a few months and we'd actually have some fucking control over the damn thing. The code we write in jsf is not what ends up running in the browser, meaning it's got a shitton of problems and we can't fix them properly. The testing framework is such shit we need to spend more time making the tests run at all than we spend actually testing and developing the program.

Managers at their finest. A program to manage a few hundred mental health institutions and the few dozen thousand patients assigned to them could only take 5+ years to create (and even when it's done it'll still be shit) and cost over 6 million euros in this stupid shithole of a country called belgium.

>I wish I had learned a trade instead

Kek, no you don't. I do machining and machine assembly in the manufacturing industry. Currently making 43k/yr and will take probably 5+ years to get to the high end of my field which is 60k something. Most trades barely pay enough to live on and leave you feeling physically drained every week. The real problem in this country is the devaluation of labor. All the wealth is funneled to the top by fucking over everyone else via a completely rigged playing field. Share holder value and executive excess are prioritized over paying living wages to anybody.
>>

how is it java's fault? it's literally perfect for this case. you'd get a whole lot more problems if you tried to implement business logic in dynamically typed mess like php or javascirpt. the only cause of this mess is bad management.
>The code we write in jsf is not what ends up running in the browser, meaning it's got a shitton of problems and we can't fix them properly.
you could use thymeleaf instead (its templates are valid html5) or just turn the backend into a rest endpoint for angular
>The testing framework is such shit we need to spend more time making the tests run at all than we spend actually testing and developing the program.

>how is it java's fault? it's literally perfect for this case. you'd get a whole lot more problems if you tried to implement business logic in dynamically typed mess like php or javascirpt. the only cause of this mess is bad management.
You misunderstand. Of course I would keep the backend: I'm talking about writing the frontend directly in html/js instead of this jsf fuckery that compiles to fucked up html with some shitty ajax fuckery that for some reason nobody can get to perform well or not be buggy, not to mention what a clusterfuck jsf is. As you so correctly put:
>you could use thymeleaf instead (its templates are valid html5) or just turn the backend into a rest endpoint for angular
That is literally what I wish they'd do. In fact they just made me turn part of the backend into a rest service, but it's only for backend to backend, not the frontend.
>I don't see why. java has probably the best testing environment and countless libraries for everything testing related
Indeed it does, the problem is that the people who work on this project (I'm just a temp consultant who's been on it a few months and won't be for much longer) are so bad at everything they can make any good tool work badly. The db recreation scripts have thrown errors since day 1, various parts of the code are just downright retarded, the test setup is a bunch of flimsy, badly configured bullshit, etc. And nobody cares to fix it and do it properly.

I'm telling you man, I'd much rather be on a project in a smaller company that just cares about making a good product in a short time with the right tools where you work with developers instead of corporate office drones who are told to follow whatever the dumbass manager 10 years ago decided was the one and only frontend tool the company would use.
