I'm a forensic malware analyst, and running basic, lightweight antivirus software is a good practice.

doesn't protect you against driveby downloads, or hijacked requests, or common rootkits used in remote code execution attacks.
however, they'd probably just recompile the binary in BEEF, but that said, if you ever do real nigga shit on the internet, then you're better off by at least not being a low hanging fruit, use some form of firewall + scan anything you download. you don't need a constant hash checker running in the background, just have a gate keeper.

1) Whatever comes with your version of windows.
2) Use an adblocker in your web browser
3) Disable Flash (you don't need to remove it), silverlight. Make your plugins "click to play" if you like.
4) A script blocker isn't required, but I like them.
5) Don't click on links from people you dont know.
6) Don't run Pirated/Crack versions of software on your computer. Use a virtual machine if needed.
7) Make good backups of your data on a consistent basis.
8) Don't be an idiot.
AVs aren't magic. They won't stop zero-days. But they can be somewhat useful for computer illiterate people. Educate yourself on how most people get infected and you will go a long way in protecting yourself.
