Hey nerds, I've been a long time Debian user and am considering switching to Ubuntu when I get my new computer. Are there any privacy issues with Ubuntu other than the Amazon spyware?
>>
>>54998488
Just use ubuntu gnome or some other variant without unity

So its no longer an issue?
>>
>>54998850
Nope. But Ubuntu eats RAM like crazy.

*Unity eats RAM like crazy.

That's Unity not Ubuntu. If you really want lightweight DE's, go for LXDE or XFCE and careful installing
>>
>>54999003
Can you suggest a good tutorial to install other DE? I always blow everything up when I try to

Sorry, meant to say that.

Unused ram is wasted
>>
>>54999208
No it's not. Idle ram lives longer. Only use as much as you need and no more. Install Arch.
>>
>>54999236
I have never in my life seen a dead ram
>>
>>54999035
Go with LXQt anon. Only it allows for kde-applications to work normal, all the other DEs apart from KDE can't configure Qt5. And it's comfy af.
>>
>>54999035

Just install regular Ubuntu. Lightweight DEs are an overhyped meme on /g/

Most arguments against Ubuntu are weak as fuck. Really fucking weak.

It's like some Seattle hipster from 1992 being a die-hard Nirvana fan, going from fanboy to vehemently disparaging them as soon as they gained popularity.

Unless you got something to hide, you don't need to worry about being spied on.

Unity remains unintuitive and buggy.

Mark's crappy old albatross.
>>
>>54998900
So you can't run it on a 2GB RAM shitbox. I have 4GB though and it runs fine.
>>54999003
Neither are really all that lightweight. If he wanted a lightweight DE he'd pick JWM or i3, but chances are his computer is more modern.

>>54998488
The 'spyware' is open-source and opt-out if not removable. If you really don't like using Unity for whatever, try any of these.

Or look into openSUSE. openSUSE is easy and cool.

Seriously though, why would you go back to Ubuntu/Mint? There is so much package bloat it's ridiculous. At least with Debian's net installer you can have an installation that's as basic as you want. You can even piece meal the DE if you want.

Gentleniggers, it's motherfucking Canonical, a company in partnership with Microsoft. You shouldn't allow Canonical to get away with perverting GNU/Linux into something simliar to Windows. They spy on their users, they lie to their users (software center lists proprietary software as "free") and with porting Ubuntu to Windows 10, they hurt the whole community.

Don't use Ubuntu.

Regarding the unity variant i'm not sure but about the derivatives i can confirm there's not that kind of problem. IFAIK the most recent LTS version (16.04) doesn't include that or at least it's not activated by default but try it in a live cd or a virtual machine if you have doubts.
