GTX cards only support 4 monitors alone or 5 monitors in SLI. This is a limitation enforced by Nvidia, and will cap you regardless of how you connect them.
The only exception is Gigabyte video cards, because Gigabyte doesn't give a fuck and made a workaround, sort of like what ASRock did that lets you overclock Xeons.

I only have two right now because I only need two: A 16:9 for work/>gaming and a 4:3 for browsing the internet. I've never really felt the need for more and I don't see why anyone would desire so much to begin with.
