sup /g/, is it possible to install spyware that runs outside

is it possible to install spyware that runs outside the OS/before the OS boots and thus cannot monitor? If so, how likely do you think it is, that manufactured hardware already gets shipped in such a rigged state?

It's possible with modifying the BIOS or dicking around with GRUB, but it's hard. An easier solution is to utilize hardware USB dongles to capture keystrokes.

I've read about dropping binaries into the BIOS aswell but can this kind of stuff actually bypass a network sniffer?
