Is this a worthwhile thing to do? Is there some kind of bottleneck on the cheap adapter cards that prevents NVME drives from reaching their full potential?
>>
Just get a PCIE SSD you shitlord.
>>
>>54966517
No.
>>
>>54966517
Yes to the first question, no to the second.
>>
>>54966517
M.2 is literary PCI-E
>>
>>54966517
Does anyone have one of these in a really cramped/warm-running ITX build? I'd like to get one, but I'm curious of what speeds it runs at when it throttles.

Enjoy your no Gentoo.
>>
>>54966630
It does not throttle silly...
>>
>>54966673
It throttles when it reaches 70C.
>>
>>54966517
if you already have a m.2 stick, then get the adapter thingy

otherwise just get a pci-e drive

this is like puting a car on top of another car and drive the lower car with the upper car

It's a lot more expensive.

But I have noticed there are some coming out of Dell prebuilt workstations that may be worth looking at. Might be a lot more in the next year on ebay.
>>
>>54966647
Why can't you use Linux?
>>
Okay. What are the speeds of this? And how much does it cost? Thinking of adding a Pcie SSD to my system because it will probably be the best upgrade I can do.
>>
>>54966913
No drivers yet to boot from a M.2 medium.
But you can boot from a usb-key or a sata-disk, and then gain access to your M.2 medium.

This is one of the cheapest PCI-E SSDs I could find

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820249053

But then reading about it I find this:
>The product can handle a maximum sustained data read speed is of 770 MB/s and the top write speed is of 580 MB/s

That's slow compared to some of the m.2 drives you can find like this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-SM951-128GB-NVMe-PCIe-M-2-SSD-PCI-Express-Gen3-x4-MZHPV128HDGM-/252404241403?hash=item3ac47713fb:g:CR8AAOSwMHdXSAbi

It has a read speed over twice the Plextor, and a write almost as fast (and read is more important for a lot of people).

Yeah, all you do is install a bootloader to your hard drive and set it to boot from the m.2 drive. You don't even have to see the bootloader on startup, it will be functionally exactly the same as if it weren't there (unless you have to remove your hard drive).
>>

>What are the speeds of this?
All over the place from what I can see. The little research I've seen so far says m.2 is just another version of PCI-E so even the cheapo chink adapters should not be a bottleneck.

But you should make sure your motherboard supports booting off of it, or you may have to resort to using a bootloader on another drive (not really a big deal).
>>
>>54967053
So what would be better? Pcie drive, or M.2 with adapter?
>>
>>54966517

>he fell for the m2 meme

Mine is in a very cool running ITX system and it will hit 60c with heatsinks applied.

Buy some cheap copper heatsinks and stick them on with thermal pads to prevent throttling.

This.
Otherwise you're going to be seeing pic related happen and your speeds are going to go down the shitter.
They actually run that fucking hot.

Over 500 samples and you're worried about a 3% negative rating? Do you understand how a feedback system works?

Are you one of those people who won't buy from an ebay seller with 99% positive feedback even though they have 10,000 sales?
>>
>>54967252
If you want sheer speed for the lowest price I think you can buy one of the cheaper brand m.2 drives at 120gb for less than $100 and use an adapter. I don't see anything that competes with it for the same price.

But is 120gb enough for you?
>>
>>54970105
You guys know that m.2 is an interface standard not a communication standard, right?

Those pcie adapters only work with NVMe (Pcie) SSDs. Most cheap SSDs use SATA over m.2. They will not work with those adapters.
You can tell by looking at the notch keys. 2 notches equals SATA, 1 notch equals pcie/NVMe.
>>
>>54970248
Yeah, I know. It was implied it had to be an nvme drive since that is the OP topic.
>>
>>54966607
False, M.2 is a form factor.
