Router and wireless access point are the preferred method. You're taking processing power from routing with every feature you add.

>>

Riced with custom openwrt, with 800mhz overclock and -O3 flags it makes almost 14/16mbit with openvpn aes256.
>>
>>54966313
>Can you elaborate?

Routing and access point are two different jobs that should be done by two different devices. Your access point should be in the center of your living space and your router/firewall should be near your demarc. Combo devices are terrible and things like DDwrt only make them slightly better. Once you move to a real router/firewall and access point you'll never go back to combo device crap.

>>54968824
>Aerohive ap230 and a Meraki mr18 routed using a j1900 pfsense box.

How do you like your Aerohive gear? I've got Cisco, Meraki, and Ubiquiti gear and can't find something that does exactly what I want for the right price. I have high expectations though.
>>
>>54968811
Any decent combo Router/AP has multi-GHz arm processors that can easily handle 1Gb/s throughput on all outputs
>>
>>54969412
>How do you like your Aerohive gear?
The speed is nice, the AP230 is AC1300. I've found the Meraki to be a bit more reliable though.
>>
>>54969497
I suppose the more accurate term would be compatibility. I've occasionally had trouble connecting laptops to it.
>>

>>
>>54969452
>Any decent combo Router/AP has multi-GHz arm processors that can easily handle 1Gb/s throughput on all outputs

Ok. You still have your router where your access point should be or your access point where your router should be. You don't get any kind of workable IPS, proxy, vlan support, usable layer 3 routing, pretty much any layer 2 or 3 feature set, DNS options other than the most basic implementation, and that's just what I can think of offhand. Combo devices are terrible and have terrible, terrible security. They are the pube fire of network devices. They check the box in the shittiest, least capable method possible.

If you work for a company that uses a combo device for it's network, you shouldn't work for that company.

They're not MU-MIMO but they're regular MIMO, right? Did the HPs have broadcom cards?

Good question, I haven't ever checked.

But is that true for the 2.4GHz or just the 5GHz?
5GHz just doesn't deal with obstacles as well.
The higher the frequency, the more a signal is easily blocked and reflected.

No, they're marketed towards customer facing networks for highly geographically diverse companies like franchised hotels, coffee shops, restaurants, etc. This way an admin team can manage everything from a central dashboard instead of having to manage gear onsite in the traditional style.

They've got all kinds of tools to do visitor, and customer analytics, but only basic network management.
