Routing and access point are two different jobs that should be done by two different devices. Your access point should be in the center of your living space and your router/firewall should be near your demarc. Combo devices are terrible and things like DDwrt only make them slightly better. Once you move to a real router/firewall and access point you'll never go back to combo device crap.

Ok. You still have your router where your access point should be or your access point where your router should be. You don't get any kind of workable IPS, proxy, vlan support, usable layer 3 routing, pretty much any layer 2 or 3 feature set, DNS options other than the most basic implementation, and that's just what I can think of offhand. Combo devices are terrible and have terrible, terrible security. They are the pube fire of network devices. They check the box in the shittiest, least capable method possible.
If you work for a company that uses a combo device for it's network, you shouldn't work for that company.

the AC1200 c5 v1.2 has identical hardware as their AC1750 C7 v2. tried openwrt and dd-wrt ended up sticking with latest C7 v2 stock firmware. bretty gud past 6 months
archer c5 replaced a buffalo whr-hp-g300n with dd-wrt. buffalo was OK but had crap power jack, was finicky no matter what and would turn off if power cord was touched, resoldered it got a new ac adapter no difference
also have a wrt54gs v6 running dd-wrt micro as a client bridge for a LAN only brother multifunction printer.

I use a D-link GO-RT-AC750. It werks well, the signal is good, and it gives me the speed I also have on broadband. The problem is that once a week I need to unplug it, wait, then plug it again (the internet drops for some reason), and the ping is a bit high.
