Why do lincux defend an OS where things stop working with regularity? Sure windows isn't perfect but if you compare how often you have to troubleshoot an issue in Windows vs how often in Linux, it's hard to understand why am average user would choose Linux.

They bring said I can understand using Linux if you have very specialized needs where you would be writing the program anyway.

Well.. if you know how to use linkux it's pretty straight forward, I've only had to troubleshoot a couple of times..

The last problem I had was installing and getting the installation to recognize my 980ti as a gpu.. Solving this took me 15 minutes, literally had to install a never version of the driver that's all..

Shut the hell up sperglord, enjoy your bsod and maxing out your ram running nothing but your task manager and chrome.

I have given Linux more than enough chances but it just ends up being more headache than it's worth. I'm all for free and open source software but to a certain extent its just not worth it.

If you value your time, just buy it windows. Then try Linux for shits and giggles.

When it comes to servers that's a different story. Then again let someone else set up the server for you.

>this is literally not true and you must be doing something seriously wrong and retarded to have this happen
It's just as true as your claim of needing to babysit the terminal.
>>
>>54960488
Not really. It depends on a lot of things.

If you're completely incompetent at using computers, then it's possible under some circumstances you could run into an issue that requires time to solve given your incompetence. Then again, I've had to explain to some Windows users things to fix some problems they had or even just to install software that requires you to do next to nothing. At the same time, many computer illiterates run Linux systems just fine. Once they have it set up, it's smooth sailing. In any case, you don't have to use a Linux system if you don't waot to, but don't pretend it's primarily because your time is oh so valuable. It's because you're an incompetent manchild.

Exe is part of filename, an extension.
An installer is a program that installs something. There are installers in linux and they can have various forms. There are distro specific package files that are the closest to classical windows installers. But they are standardized and works in the same way in given distro.
But there are also distro independent installers. Commonly as shell scripts that download and install files. Sometimes they even have all binary files included inside of them.

Had the same thing happen a couple of weeks ago. God I was pissed off when I found out about the single package install and how much it sped things up. This type of thing should be expected maybe if you're installing a Windows 7 image from release, not when you're installing an SP1 image. I've made god knows how many installs off an old Ubuntu 12.04 image, but every time it feels like I'm installing a brand new image when compared to installing Windows images of the same age.

There isn't so much need. In windows, every program has to install all the libraries it needs to use somewhere alongside the program, hence the need for an installer to package all the binaries together. In linux, every library on the system is installed like its own program and stored in a centralised location. When installing a new program, the package manager will check to ensure all the required dependencies are already installed, and if not, it downloads them. Any other program that needs to use these dependencies can do so, without needing to install another copy.

I'm pretty sure this is why installers are pointless in linux. It's much easier to maintain this system when you have one package manager handling everything, and everything is always installed to a centralised, predictable location. Linux needs to know what's installed, and where it is, and what version it is somehow, so it makes more sense to install everything from one source and keep track of all this stuff and keep it organised.

All of this said, I'm pretty new to linux, so someone abuse me if I'm wrong.

No I don't believe you should only code on Windows. I believe in freedom. That includes the freedom to be fucked in the arse by Microsoft. It's similar to religious freedom, where western countries allow people that want to enforce sharia law.

I also use Windows and programs on it for maximum cuckoldry (lightroom, photoshop) but that's because there's no support for this software on Linux.
I balance it out by spreading Linux on PCs that don't require such software though.

It generated value for myself because I use it to fix PCs (which means "remove windows and install Linux) and backup data more quickly.

Serious question.
If Linux becomes the most popular os tomorrow, and, just like that, 98 % of people on the world used it. How many Linux systems would be destroyed in the course of a week by malware? Not even trolling, I'm using trisquel, puppy, mint and arch on various devices for different purposes.

Wine are doing Jehovas work don't they? This is the best way to convince winfags to migrate. Now the developers have to make the switch too. Don't underestimate the big players in gaming as well. Valve are distributing proprietary games, but they could unleash hell upon Microsoft by releasing half life 3 as a steam os exclusive. Which they could easily afford financially.

>>
>>54959450
When people on /g/ wonder why some people would never use Linux, this is it.
>>
>>54962378
Yeah I noticed that as well. It's like with the wii u : nobody even knew a new console was coming out. If they don't rethink their strategy and have some "killer apps" (uuargh) otherwise that steam machine thing just ain't happening. I see them in the advantage though, because they have more time than what console competitors. They can scale and rethink their hardware in accordance with the pc market, test and rethink stuff and when they're onto something roll out the marketing machine properly.
>>
>>54962432
Fedora doesn't have that problem with steam. It just works! Fedora is often overlooked. But it's really great.

You do however, need to fix font rendering because of patent infringement fears by red hat. But that is easy to do.
>>
>>54962524
Any other issues? Cause that was the only thing that put me off at first some time ago. I didn't try it further.

Like for instance, what about UEFI support?
>>
>>54962285
Do you really think Valve will walk out on millions of $ just to 'support' Linux?
>>
>>54962553
UEFI works great, in fact Fedora was the first distro to implement it. Even secure boot works.

You will need to install RPM fusion though. Those are third party repos containing things like steam and freetype-freeworld. This doesn't take long, though.
http://peter.kingofcoders.com/?p=177

That is how you fix the font rendering. Enabling RPM fusion is as simple as opening two files and clicking "install".

Fedora is very paranoid about patents, so that's why lcd filtering is not included by default. Because apple has a patent on it.
>>
>>54962671
Yes. What they make with their own games compared to the money they make with the steam platform in general is just a very small fraction. Still they need games to convince people to move to a different platform and their flagship titles (hell, they ONLY HAVE FLAGSHIP TITLES) would be perfect for that, because every "muh games" shitter is just waiting for these titles. It would be a smart move, especially considering how gamers always want the newest and shiniest stuff. Also, if it fails miserably you can still port to Windows after half a year.
>>
>>54962775
Just consider the youtube scene cancer who need to play a game day one in order to keep their channel alive. The free advertising for their os/Linux in general that comes with that is not to be taken lightly.
