Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I've got a AUD $1000 to spend, what should I get instead of a MacBook Air. I'm looking for lightness more than anything and battery life.
>>
>>54954781
x series are a LOT smaller than the T series.
the only downside is that the x230 only takes slim drives (7mm I think) and it only has a 1366x768 screen (there's an IPS option so that makes up for it a bit).
the nice thing about the t430 is that it's a bit bigger, as a dvd drive slot that you can replace for a second hard drive, and it has a 1600x900 option

It mostly comes down to what you prefer. Do you want thin and light while sacrificing resolution, or do you want resolution at the cost of a surprisingly larger laptop

Anyone know of a wifi "mpcie" card that's compatible with the WWAN slot on a T430s?

I've replaced my mPCIe with an eGPU and would like to not have to live with USB wifi

The WWAN "mPCIe" port doesn't seem to be PCIe based (possibly USB bus?) as the eGPU and the WLAN cards both don't work in it.

Hey /tpg/, just bought this thinkpad and would like to know if I messed up.

The deets:
Core i5
No HDD (Rails and cover inatact I think)
No battery
Charger
Ultrabase

My problem is that the seller has 2 more of these in stock and I'm beginning to think I might not get all that was listed.
Has anyone ever had any experience like this before?
If so could you tell me how it went?

~14.2 seconds, Dell Latitude E6420, i7-2630QM true quad, 8GB DDR3, 7200 rpm Hitachi hard drive, cold boot to the login window (some of us do actually make use of password security, you know).

It can actually cold boot in about 8 seconds if I set a static IP for my Gigabit NIC but since I use wireless I have to leave it with DHCP enabled so I lose a few seconds with that connection.

Clean the fan, try and remove dust build up, replace thermal paste, remove battery or lower battery charge thresh-hold.

Got my x220 to run el capitan. Wifi doesn't work though because of intel stock wifi chip and I can't roll back BIOS because fucking lenovo. Ordered my wifi compatible card on amazon and everything seems to be working fine.

It's running on 128GB SSD

$220 IPS x220 + $85 SSD + free OS X = pretty good for uni.
>>
>>54981668
How hard is this?
This should be in the OP.
>>
>>54981836
You need another macbook or OS X on a vm. The only hard part is getting the el capitan from the App Store.

Would a Hackintosh boot as fast, or is this because Macs skip all the splash screens?
>>
>>54982049
Mine still has thinkpad splashscreens. And it has a bootloder for rescue etc. But when it comes to the apple logo it only takes 3 seconds on SSD.

Basically 11 seconds tops for my x220

Hi /tpg/, maybe you can help me

I'm considering a HP Elitebook 8460p for ~220$, should I? Looking for good battery, 12-14" display, and I also nice looks. It will be used a lot while traveling, and I don't want to look like a fucking trogdolyte with a bulky-ass Thinkpad.

How is a i5 2520m performance-wise? Do thinkpads around the same price perform better than a 8460p?

i would choose an x220 instead but if u dont like chinkpad then go with it

The thinkpad keyboards need to be pushed in with some force in. Leverage it 60 degress to the board, push in and lay it flat. Screw the screw from the bottom in.

I'm intending to equip my X220 with a Mini PCI-e RS232 card so I can have a native port.

I'm considering buying an X2*. I currently have a T420 and I find it bulky as I move around with it at my job a lot. I mostly need it to be able to use RDP, browse, light programming, and general sysadmin stuff. Screen size isn't all that important to me since I can just hook it up to my monitors.

Is an X220 overkill for non-intensive stuff like this? I'm drawn to the X200 because it doesn't have a touchpad and I never use mine anyway, but I don't know how well it will perform in the future.

Debian with i3, if that matters.

Can someone help me with changing all the right options in the bios?

I have a x260 and I run fedora on it

There's stuff I don't really understand and have a hard time googling and learning about the pros and cons of enabling and disabling certain options

Like the security chip should I disable it? Computrace? Execution prevention? Enable virtualization? Secure boot? Intel sgx? Device guard? Total graphics memory 256mb vs 512mb)? CPU power management? Speed step technology? And then theres all these UEFI options I don't understand...

I know this probably seems stupidly obvious but I just don't know what all these options do or how useful/not useful they are when using a linux distro like fedora

I'm chiefly interested in maximizing battery life and not opening myself up to potential exploits or powering useless features etc.
Also minimizing any botnet esque features

dont enable computrace once you do you can never turn it off
