I had been noticing my server/media PC had been cranking up the fans to 11 any time I watched something so i finally decided to clean it out and upgrade the heatsink. Dust wasn't too bad because I dust it every couple months but then I went to pull the heatsink and after a little wiggling in came out with the CPU attached.
This computer is about 6 years old, my first non-prebuilt that I converted to a media server last year. a 6 year old server with 6 year old thermal paste and it seems to have baked/vacuum sealed the cpu to the heatsink.
The CPU lock is still engaged and there's no damage to the housing or the pins. I just can't get the cpu off. Do any of you know what I can do to unstick it?
tl;dr cpu is stuck to heatsink, can't get it off.

block of wood to the edge and hit the wood with a hammer
or
soak in isopropyl alcohol try to get it between the cpu and heatsink should come off easy
Your best bet is twisting the CPU over the surface of the heatsink; that is to say, rotate clockwise. If it's stuck too tightly for you to be able to twist it with your fingers, you can use adjustable pliers for the twisting; but be careful not to damage the pins.

Yeah, I tried twisting but couldn't get enough grip without messing with the pins. I don't have pliers big enough for that either.

Hammer didn't work, I'll try the alcohol.
ive had this happen before, hair dryer on high, anon, warm that baby up, itll come off

One of these would be the best tool for the job. You can get them for like five bucks at a hardware store. (It will be a shitty one that will rust within a couple of years, but good enough for the job.)

That did it!
Hit it with the hair dryer then went back to the hammer. Popped off first try.
Now I just hope the pins are fine.

Use heat, solvents, and force over and over til it gives. Be gentle though I don't suggest using those plumber wrenches on it. soak the spot between the heatsink and the CPU with rubbing alcohol then try heating it with a hair dryer, heat gun, then try budging it

AMD should really go for LGA unless Intel sit on some fat ass patent on it.
Use silicone based paste.

Neither AMD nor intel own the design for their preferred type of socket. They're all sourced from a 3rd party who manufactures and designs them.
The locking arm on AMD's sockets only locks on with enough force to hold it in place. It is intentionally designed to come out without damage if pulled on it. The LGA style locking mechanism used in intel systems can become damaged if enough force is applied when trying to remove an old heat sink. The trade off is that LGA has slightly better electrical signaling.
They can each choose whatever they want, and they each have reasons for what they end up using.
