About to upgrade from a Haswell to a Skylake, should I bother with DDR4 RAM, or is it just a meme?

Apparently DDR4 runs at a lower voltage, meaning the integrated voltage regulator on the processor runs at a lower voltage. If you through that processor on a 'DDR3' capable board, you're going to be running the VRM at a higher voltage than it was intended to.

DDR4 is a meme for now, stick with DDR3. You'll see no performance difference whatsoever.
DDR4 is cheap enough and the path forward (as DDR4 is adopted more and more in computer building, production of DDR4 will increase as DDR3 decreases, leading to DDR3 prices rising over time).

The Z170 has nicer boards, especially if you go ITX.
Not to mention, M.2 on Z97 boards was simply a nice afterthought but you usually have to choose between one M.2 drive--even if it's SATA-based, and two regular SATA's. Z170's are smart enough to know they're SATA-based and take up only one respective SATA port.

If you want a real upgrade then wait for Zen or cannon lake. Rumour is AMD will sell their 8-core Zen flagship meant to compete with the 8-core i7-5960X (~$1,100) for ~$300-500.

Anyway yeah the CPU will make a tiny differance but it's so insignificant that it's not worth "upgrading" aka blowing hundreds of dollars down the drain. You're better off getting 2 RX 490 graphics cards for 4K.

Pascal scales really well in SLI as Nvidia dropped support for 3 or 4 way SLI, they have been focusing on 2 way. Thus 490 will probably only drop late autumn whereas I will get a new card next year anyway.

Get 16GB (2x8) Corsair Dominator LPX for like $65. It's 2400MHz, 16 CAS latency, performs decent and isn't too expensive.
You'll have plenty of ram for gaming and shit too. 8GB only saves you like $10 so it's pointless.

DDR4 typically runs at 1.2V native, OC safe range is 1.35V
