>being so anti-technology and tech-illiterate that you are scared of using a vastly superior player simply because you have to type in your settings instead of clicking them in.

Don't even bother asking why you should use mpv instead of your player, because your player has become stagnant and outdated. mpv is the future and not using it makes you the past.

Either see for yourself that mpv has become the superior video player or wallow in your mediocrity with your terrible VLC garbage. It is up to you to see for yourself why it's amazing so don't bother asking to be spoonfed.

For you intelligent mpv users and newbies, let's discuss amongst ourselves the latest developments in this superior piece of video playback software.

Is mpv good as music player?
>>
>>54942327
no
>>
>>54942327
Define "good" and define "player".

If by "good", you mean quality of the sound, then yes. It does play good quality sound.

If by "player", you mean the ability to play a music file, then yes. It does play music files.

However if your notion of "good" is an all encompassing idea, then no. MPV doesn't play music "good".

If your notion of "player" is more than simply playing music file, then no. MPV is not a good music player.
>>
>>54942327
It supports
--speed=1.1 --audio-pitch-correction=no
, which makes most music sound better, but it doesn't support any chiptune formats so I have to waste disk space converting them to opus.

Source: everybody who works on mpv and is fed up by all of the bullshit coming from SMPlayer's general direction

SMPlayer is basically 1% GUI, 99% stupid, obscure, arcane and fucking retarded shitty hacks and work-arounds for MPlayer deficiencies.

When they changed their binary from “mplayer” to “mpv” they just left all those hacks in, since the SMPlayer developers apparently didn't get the memo that mpv is not MPlayer and shouldn't be approached with the same level of shitty hacks.

The result? Shittons of bogus bug reports on the mpv bug tracker by people running into issues caused by all of the aforementioned hacks. It's no surprise that mpv hates SMPlayer. Either way, just don't use it
>>
>>54952942
Do you have a recent version of mpv? Full HDR support and tone mapping landed recently, check
https://mpv.io/manual/master/#video-output-drivers-target-brightness
You might not have it configured correctly, also madvr has different defaults on brightness, iirc the tone mapping isn't adjustable on madvr
>>
>>54952942
>>54953680
More importantly, tone mapping is completely fucking arbitrary as there's essentially absolutely zero specification.

HDR-on-SDR is pretty much the wild west. There's no such thing as “correct” when it comes to tone mapping HDR. There's only “does it pass as watchable or not?”
>>

Not him, but I've heard something similar, though not in so many words, before.
So these hacks, do they fuck up my picture quality a whole lot? I imagine they might, but I really don't see much of anything that would apply to.

What's a good alternative for setting default subtitles? I could ditch it pretty easily. I never file bug reports though.
>inb4 weeb
>>
>>54953748
I see your problem, that video is probably using BT.2020, and you probably have madVR configured with some sort of color management (or they changed their defaults to use it), mpv by default doesn't use color management
You can easily enable it by adding icc-profile-auto to your vo, it should work if you have a reasonable profile installed in your system, otherwise you will need to use target-prim
Check the manual
https://mpv.io/manual/master/#video-output-drivers-target-prim
and
https://mpv.io/manual/master/#video-output-drivers-icc-profile-auto
If you don't have a ICC profile then you will have to use target-prim, the primaries for common monitors are bt.709, unless it's a wide gamut monitor in which case the primaries are probably close to adobe

It would be interesting to see what's causing this, since mpv's "fullscreen" mode is just a borderless window the same size as the screen. It could be something else causing the crash, like switching from downscaling to upscaling.

I've never used ShareX, but are you sure that's not a Unix timestamp?

It looks like you could do that in mpv screenshot syntax with %ts (untested)

Is there anyway to make mpv screenshot template be just random numbers generated?

kind of like what sharex does with %unix%

I was looking at the manual, but I don't think it's possible.

This is the one that comes closest to it
https://mpv.io/manual/master/#options-%[#][0x]n

However it chooses the amount of max number you want to be in the filename, maximum 9, and it goes from 00000001,0000002,0000003, etc...
basically it just keeps adding a number to it, instead what I would like is for all the numbers to be random, including the 0.

>>54959694
%tX
Specify the current local date/time

Don't think that'll work.
>I've never used ShareX, but are you sure that's not a Unix timestamp?
You can also use %rn multiple times on it, by the way you should try it, it's probably the best screenshot program right now.

What is the unix time stamp?

The unix time stamp is a way to track time as a running total of seconds. This count starts at the Unix Epoch on January 1st, 1970 at UTC. Therefore, the unix time stamp is merely the number of seconds between a particular date and the Unix Epoch. It should also be pointed out (thanks to the comments from visitors to this site) that this point in time technically does not change no matter where you are located on the globe. This is very useful to computer systems for tracking and sorting dated information in dynamic and distributed applications both online and client side.

>>54959853
it does not matter what unix is or does, if I can archive what I want, which so far doesn't seem like it can, by reading the manual, and choosing almost all the options so far.

You can prove me wrong, and take a screenshot of your mpv player taking a screenshot like how I want it, take the file name of the obama picture for example.
>>
>>54959889
>You can prove me wrong, and take a screenshot of your mpv player taking a screenshot like how I want it, take the file name of the obama picture for example.
You could start by stating clearly what you want. So far you have been referring multiple times to %unix% which is a unix timestamp (and possible to use in mpv), but that obama picture is clearly NOT the result of using %unix.

And for the record, yes, it is possible - but I won't tell you how, because you can figure it out by yourself.
>>
>>54959933
>And for the record, yes, it is possible - but I won't tell you how, because you can figure it out by yourself.
than prove it by taking a screenshot of mpv taking an screenshot, normally the OSD tells you the filename.

I don't mind figuring it out by myself.

actually it seems what I was hoping to do doesn't work as-is, but it could still work with some modifications.

Basically my idea was to just use the current timestamp's nanoseconds component (or possibly the current playback time in milliseconds) to get a pseudorandom number every single time, but the function mpv uses to get the timestamp doesn't accept this modifier.

However you could still do it by modifying your locale to introduce a special modifier that makes the timestamp work like a pseudorandom hash, then use that instead.

Either way, if you really, really want a truly random number, it would be easier to do this with a lua script
>>
I have mpv installed. It's ok but I kinda feel like using a shell program to play videos is kind of retarded and a waste of time.

mpv would be in so much of a better position if it removed windows support, it's surreal

1. fewer trolls
2. no crashes, rock solid drivers
3. fewer dumb questions

Just because you use linux doesn't mean you are smart, and no fucking shit it would be easier to release more stable releases if they didn't had to support more than one OS.

Are you pretending to be stupid?
>>54961645
I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but is it really that annoying? more than likely you are gonna know what movie you are playing.

I can understand the time playing, however meanwhile you can use a bold font, or even a medium font weight.

I'm currently modifying the stats.lua script to display the same informations that madVR OSD. Are there properties to get the scalers used during playback and to know if interpolation is active or not ? It would also help me to debug my profiles. I tried "current-vo" but it only display "opengl-hq".
Another question : how do you move the subtitles in the black bar ?
Thanks for your help.

>and no fucking shit it would be easier to release more stable releases if they didn't had to support more than one OS.
But mpv has no problems running well on OS X, BSD and various different flavors of Linux including Wayland, X11.

It's only Windows. And do you want to know why? Because Microsoft actively goes out of its way to make porting any software to Windows a living nightmare. Microsoft chooses to be the autistic special little snowflake with every single decision.

Windows alone gets 30 of their own little #ifdef snowflake logic in mpv, along with 19 whole files for OS compatibility layers, some of which literally have “hack“ in the name.

The state of OpenGL support on Windows is so fucking terrible that mpv literally has to translate OpenGL calls to Direct3D calls at runtime using a compatibility hack, rather than use the “native” OpenGL support. (And yes, it's about as stable as you'd expect, which is why you see all these windows users having all these weird problems) It's that bad. No other platform suffers from this level of comical failure and non-cooperation.

There are hundreds of issues on the issue tracker and bugfix commits directly attributed to Windows being shit alone. The amount of developer time that is wasted on this garbage platform is surreal.
>>
>>54962231
Like just an anecdotal example: When implementing the new performance data stuff, on Linux/OpenGL everything just works fine. Load the right OpenGL extension and that's the end of it.

.. and then it didn't work on Windows. Because the shitty OpenGL->Direct3D layer hack only supports GLES (the shit version of OpenGL that itself causes pain and suffering on mpv developers), and GLES doesn't have one of the functions it needs for autistic reasons.

So instead of just adding support for it, instead they make their own carbon copy of the extension under a different name - which was then implemented, but then this was later reverted and implemented again as a copy under yet another different name (with one added function). By the time we've traversed several issues and mailing lists piecing all of that together, and implement a compatibility hack so it would work on ANGLE as well, we find out that the support in ANGLE is also buggy and incomplete, with one of the functions basically missing (resulting in a crash).

This shit is a daily occurrence. Windows support causes nothing but cancer. It's a fucking nightmare, a fucking mess, and I wish it would just go and die. Normies can use OS X, because Apple at least has their shit together when it comes to stealing code from free software projects.

How many fucking linux versions are they, distros is what you guys call it if I even remember correctly, how many of them have failed to even be simple for the casual kid, or even for the decently tech savy, who knows his stuff here and there.

Don't know if there's a simpler way but you can do it if you rebind each key you use that shows osd text. If you use stats.lua there's a font option.
