can it not be moved from the cheap computer to a more expensive one and linux put on the cheap computer?

>>

Could you not buy Windows 8, install that and upgrade for free?
>>
>>54933203
What version of windows 10 is on the laptop?

I know when I got a netbook years ago, it had a dumbed down versiono f windows 7 witha bunch of functions removed.

I COULDN'T EVEN CHANGE THE BACKGROUND. I had to install a third party fix because I didn't want to put a pirate copy of windows on my brand new netbook for fear of driver compatibility issues.

I was less tech literate then

a clean install is always better than doing an upgrade

i am building a gaming computer and dont have an extra copy of windows 7 or 8.1 to use on it

just wondering if i can use the activation code from the laptop i listed to do a clean install on a new computer then put linux on the laptop this way i am only using win10 one time per key and hey, free little laptop and i save 40bucks

If you can't afford it, use a free alternative like Linux.

OP here, yes thank you

I am going to have $1500 in this tower by the time I am done, I do not mind paying $120 for the OS, i think that is fair. I am starting to wonder if i really need 10 though, maybe I could just use 7, I just want to game. Does 10 have a higher Directx setting or something?

anyway i am not going to pirate the OS, that's too much trouble. I want a legit copy so if i have issues i will know it's not due to a hacked OS
>>

hmmm

microsoft lists this as the system requirements for win 10

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC
RAM:
1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit
Hard disk space:
16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS
Graphics card:
DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver
Display:
800x600

seems kinda like that would be unusable

>>
>>54934506
Isn't that just people abusing msdn keys?
>>
>>54933203
No. Windows 10 computers do not come with a CD key, they come with a digital rights activation.

You cannot use it on anything but the original exact motherboard.

But you can upgrade a cracked windows 7, then do a clean install of 10 with no CD key.

The digital rights activation is motherboard bound, which means your new PC is activated with windows 10 forever after an upgrade, even on a clean install.
>>
>>54934537
Harvesting the key off another computer is also abusing the key but OP seems to have no problem with that.
>>
>>54934573
How? Microsoft still got paid for that key.
>>

>>

That depends. A lot of times nonfree drivers for sound cards and shit come preinstalled for that PC. So no, it might not be compatible with the PC you intend to use Windows on. Not sure how available generic drivers and shit are for Windows though.

That key that you extract is just a generic one which is why everyone that has upgraded has the same product key. Your activation is done via digital entitlement, which is saved on Microsoft's own activation servers.
>>
>>54934537
MSDN keys are pretty greymarket, the micosoft ToS says not to do it, but ToS' pretty much never uphold in court

It's not illegal it's just sketchy
>>
>>54939583
That's why they are being constantly blocked by the activation system.
>>
>>54937604
Windows 10 literally has a clean wipe option in the settings, you don't need to extract the key or do anything fancy
>>
>>54939603
It's a shame, but can't you buy a key for w7, then update it to 10?
>>
>>54939946
Yeah, but once there are any big hardware changes you will lose the activation via digital entitlement. They are rolling out a new hardware hash for this type of activation, to avoid all the misreadings that the current one has, but it will only be adopted after the free upgrade is over.
>>
>>54940065
The "digital entitlement" thing is a new thing from an end-user perspective but it's basically always been how OEM copies work. It's tied to the mobo serials. You'd have to change the mobo to lose your digital entitlement, and then you get on with Pajeet on the product activation line and tell him that your mobo failed and you replaced it with the "closest possible" replacement and he pushes the button to override.
>>
>>54940513
The thing is, digital entitlement doesn't have any way to override the activation since there isn't an OEM product key.
>>
>>54933203

No, the OEM versions of Windows are bound to a single motherboard. You can sometimes purchase an OEM version that hasn't been previously used online at a discount over the regular version.

That's what I sometimes end up doing on my desktop. The laptop I'm currently on is pretty much a toaster by today's standards though and would have trouble running one. They're going to diag off the installation ID history and then assign a new digital entitlement, unless Microsoft is totally retarded and wants to alienate everyone.

So is it possible to get a legit version of windows 10 by using a used windows 7/10 key on a completely different pc or not
>>
>>54942570
A Windows 7 key won't generate you a product key that you can use on another computer, and the Windows 10 key is only usable on a single computer. You will need an override to activate it on another computer which means that the first computer will eventually lose its activation.
>>
>>54942590
A windows 7 retail key is portable and will activate on a Windows 10 clean install if the win7 license isn't actively being used on another PC.
>>
>54933203

because free market and consumers will pay what they can bear and 99% of them have no computer literacy

if you can't afford it then move to a place where you can afford the cost of living

Even if you manage to extract the OEM key and activate windows you are breaking the terms and conditions so you're voiding your license.
>>
>>54942590
please note that a mainboard is not a computer

windoze licenses are bound to mainboards
>>

It will only activate a Windows 10 install on a single computer. Once you replace the motherboard or the computer, it will no longer work. It will display a message indicating that the product key is already in use, and there is no way to override it.
