it depends, but the GHC is extremely optimized. turns out some of that crazy type theory mathematics going on makes it easier to optimize certain idioms.

also, matlab isn't a general purpose programming language.

you can even have mutable vars inside the ST / IO monads
of you'll need to keep mind that there is a gc
